Shantanu could have easily given the throne to Bhishma, as he was already the Yuvraj, and left to stay with Satyavati at her place and live the rest of his old life in peace. Bhisma was young and took an emotional decision in haste. Satyavati knew the real world. Bhisma, being raised by a Goddess, never understood the problem, and having spent his childhood away from his father, was too eager to please him. He had to see the plight of the Pandavas to get a glimpse of reality, which Satyavati already knew.
Bt still Bhishma stood by his 'Oath' throughout his life & it's not that easy to resist the temptation of power even when the throne of Hastinapur was left with no Heir for yrs even then Bhishma never ever eyed on the throne.....

All the wars and swayamvar she sent Bhishma to fight in place for her sons, due to which Bhishma had to face Amba's wrath. Even when it was time for niyoga she called her biological son ved vyas instead of freeing Bhishma of his oath

Sathyavati is never described as good or bad person. She was just a human, just like Santhanu, Bhishma, Draupadi or Yudhistir. They all did good and bad things, and had to face consequence. Mahabharath is not a story of good v.s bad.... it is an encyclopedia of human actions and emotions. It shows that all humans are just various shades of gray. Sathyavathi, as her name means just spoke truth. Whatever her dreams & desires were, she just honestly expressed. Blame it on Shanthanu who was blindly infatuated with her beauty, or on Bhishma, who was blind devotee of father, or Kashi sisters who were frail, or Vichitraveerya who was lust filled... As Ganga rightly said, fate of a human is on his or her choices.
