- Looking for a powerful amplifier? Check out this review of the HiFi Rose RA280 Amplifier by our editor, Ed Selley. Find out if this amplifier has the power you need for your audio setup!
The RA280 might not be the obvious choice at the price point but neither that, nor the quirky looks, should distract you from what is an extremely talented amplifier and one that will work in a variety of systems extremely effectively. HiFi Rose's wholly unique approach to audio is far more than bluster; it's really beginning to impress.
I wasn’t completely sure what to expect when I unboxed the RA280. I imagined it would be a competent enough device but I genuinely wasn’t expecting what actually resulted. This is a device that charms and delights from the get go. Behind the unique but actually very usable design is a combination of enormous headroom and beguiling presentation that appealed from the outset and only became more engaging the more I used it. This is far more than a partner to the Rose streamers. For anyone with their digital sources sorted, this is a beautifully realised take on a three-grand amplifier and one that comes Highly Recommended.
Pros
Combines volcanic power with sweetness and tonal realism
Excellent phono stage
Superbly made
Cons
Quirky volume control
No headphone socket or digital board
Looks will divide opinion

Another quality video. You’re clearly just being yourself presenting, don’t change it.
Another great review. I don't know what you're on about, you're a natural. I also think that with the youtube reviews backed up with written ones is a great way for viewers that are interested to delve deeper. Keep up the good work.
A very good review. Your style on camera is spot on. A very intriguing product
Great review! Maybe this is my next amp, hopefully for 20 years 🙂 Or the Hegel H400?
I'm extremely intrigued by this product but I have a technical question: During your tour of the rear apron, you said, "It has an XLR input," and what I notice about that choice of language is that you didn't say "it has a fully balanced input," and that difference is something many people don't appreciate. Is this amp's XLR input fully balanced, or is it merely XLR-for-convenience? Thank you.
Great to see longer, more in depth video reviews. I hope this to be the new standard here. Cheers!
More to come!
A great review.
Is the preamp actually Class A? I can’t find info on that. Thanks for the review.
As a long time reader, it's great to see you now in the youtube video space
they should release a power amp only version
Yup. I was just about to see if they did. Good call 👍
Finish assembling your lamp, but other than that great video review, and I'm sure it compliments the more detailed written review really well which is still important to have as format.
I feel like HiFi Rose have a bit of identity crisis between their amplifiers and streamers. Personally I think the RA280 actually looks really good especially compared to mayhem of switches, dials and sliders of the 180.
I want the Copper.................
Outside of the aluminum case, nothing inside has any value at all EXCEPT if one chooses a copper toroid power supply. If the amp goes dead, at least with the copper toroid there's a good market for both the transformer or the copper itself. I know what it's like to be broke & have nothing of value.
