El Tianguis de Tonalá 4K walking Tour
Since Pre-Hispanic times, the "Tianguis" on Thursdays was the traditional meeting point in the Plaza de Tonalá.
Indigenous people from different parts of the Atemajac Valley exchanged their goods in this place.
With the conquest, this tradition was respected by adding Sunday (Lord's Day) as the proper date for bartering.
Currently, about 3,500 to 4,000 merchants set up shop on Thursdays and Sundays mainly between Juárez, Madero, Cruz Blanca, Santos Degollado streets and Tonaltecas and Tonala Avenues.
The artisanal Tianguis is currently made up mostly of crafts, as well as Mexican food and non-craft items.
