That was a brilliant first episode in the Search for Sussex. Well made and presented. I love the idea of going with a one-hundred-year-old book and searching for that pre-digital world where the pace was measured by the gait of a horse.

Fantastic video! As a child I remember going to the Bridge Tavern (Not sure of the name), and playing in the garden in the back, while the adults drank and chatted. There used to be a boat race arounf there, with the boats made out of bathtubs and such. I was lucky enough to visit Bramber a few years ago with my sister, and our daughters (Live in the US now).

My son, it was the Bridge INN, we used to be friends with couple that managed it, Your Grandfather and I used to go there on a Friday night for a pint or two, I also worked behind the bar a few times to help them out. There was a
bathtub race annually, never participated in that, I remember the Potters museum as a child and the stuffed animals and birds dressed and put it various scenes, one was the death of poor cock robin .

I remember that bridge & the river going thriugh the fields. I remember an old flint covered building near there. My Nan used to live in Beeding in the 1960s, in a bungalow that I remember for having a very shaky dining room floor that I delighted as a toddler to stomp my little feet on a bit to make everything in the sideboard rattle. Thankyou for showing us.

Thank you, Richard, for a great and well made video. Sussex is one of my favourite counties of Britain. The valley walk from Alfriston to the coast, with a view on the Sven Sisters, was a genuine treat.
It's funny that I discover your exploring of Sussex years after you started them. I'll watch all of them now. 👍👋👩‍🌾

Well done Richard! I think this new series will prove quite fascinating to compare your's to Cooke's journey. As well, to compare the differences of these locales from over 100 yrs time. You mentioned that Arthur Cooke's book had pictures, I'd love to see some of those old photos to compare the then w/ the now as you go village to village!

Btw...you know I especially love anything that has to do w/ Bramber Castle (Grandpa Braose's old place!😂 And how & why I originally found you!)!!! I was glad to see more of the village of Bramber in tonight's vid - such a beautiful little village! I hope a local does take you up on showing you around more (after the lockdown is over of course), especially that might be able to delve deeper into the history of the town!

It seems strange thinking of Steyning as being a seaport and waves lapping again the castle walls at Bramber. Compared to pre-2020 lockdown the traffic through both villages was normally much higher than in your lovely film. It’s great that Bramber Castle is still open to the public and that admission is free of charge. There are still some excellent pubs in Bramber that sell delicious Sussex beers, wine and food 😋🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿😋

I remember the House of Pipes too, used to go there in the 1970’s. I have a vague memory that Potter’s museum of Curiosities was in the same building but not certain. Potter’s always held a morbid fascination for me with stuffed squirrels playing cricket, quite bizarre.

Fascinating snapshot of Bramber & Beeding. I must pay a visit soon!
Interestingly, that long straight road through Bramber and over the bridge is one of many places Charles II was nearly captured during the Royal Escape. Boldly riding past a group of soldiers, shortly after they heard the horses suddenly come galloping towards them. Amazingly they stayed calm, carrying on sedately - and the soldiers went thundering past, intent on some other urgent matter.
They proceeded over the Downs to Brighton then, always only one step ahead of the searching soldiers, finally escaped across to France.

Only just seen this! The windmill in question is Upper Beeding Windmill. His illustration on page 20 of the book is entitled 'Beeding from Bramber in 1891' this is interesting as it means the mill may have been standing a tad longer than had been recorded elsewhere. Mill historian Herbert Simmons in his notes on Sussex windmills says: "Upper Beeding MIll is believed to have ceased milling about 1870, she then stood derelict until 1876, with all four sweeps intact, before two of them were removed just prior to when the mill blew down during a gale c1888. An old man living at Small Dole, where he came to live about 1892, says he remembers one of his first jobs there was to help remove most of the timbers to Horton Farm. The mill wreckage had been laying where it fell for about 2 or 3 years.
The site was still discernable in the 1930s with a few remnants of millstone and the foundations of millers cottage, along with an old well adjoining".

You mention the old pipe museum that you couldn't find. I seem to remember that before it featured pipes it was an exhibition of stuffed cats, rabbits, squirrels and the like. The taxidermied creatures were posed in the manner of people living everyday lives: sitting at the dining table, at school, at work, at leisure and so on. Rather creepy really and it fell out of favour to become the pipe museum.
