A Beginners Guide: NPK in Hydroponics

  • In this video, Ethan Walter with Bright Agrotech explains the basics of N-P-K.
    NPK stands for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These three numbers represent the ratio of N, P, and K in your fertilizer. Every main mix (complete balance) fertilizer will have these numbers clearly displayed, always in the same order.
    Not all fertilizers are complete balanced fertilizers, however. Different ratios of NPK serve different needs. For instance, a blooming mix might have low to no nitrogen in the mix.
    So what do each of these nutrients do?
    Nitrogen is what makes your plants green, big, and strong. It is the absolute most important nutrient in the solution.
    Phosphorus is important for blooming; it plays a role in all of the reproductive roles of your plant.
    Potassium is important to plant photosynthesis, CO2 uptake, activation of plant enzymes, and water uptake. It is important for building strong stems and seeds.
    N, P, and K are not the only nutrient that your plant needs. Micronutrients are required in much smaller quantities. A complete and balanced fertilizer will almost always include the micronutrients.
    The NPK in your fertilizer are not present in their pure elemental form. Plants can only take up certain compounds with these nutrients in them. Fertilizers also sometimes have multiple forms in the fertilizers. These are listed on the label of the formula.
    Many sources of fertilizers are synthetically derived. You might be wondering if there’s an organic option. The answer is yes, but realize that more is needed to use an organic solution. To use organic fertilizers in a hydroponic setup, you need a very strong microbial community in your system. The microbes are what drives organic growing. They cycle the nutrients and turn them into a form that the plants can use. So if you don’t have a strong community, this won’t work.
    Another drawback is that it takes time (6-18 weeks) to culture the microbial community.
    A final drawback of organic hydroponics is that some solutions do stink. When you put a lot of organic compounds into water, you can end up with lots of anaerobic microbes that produce horrible smells.
    If you’re using a solution with low nutrient, but not for a blooming crop, you should supplement nitrogen in another part of the solution. We use CaNO3, calcium nitrate, to bring up the nitrogen ratios for our lettuce crops.

    Sir is it correct to mix fermented fruit juice with nutrient solution?

    • @ZipGrowInc
      @ZipGrowInc  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late response Joseph. In some types of systems fermented products are used to encourage healthy bacteria, but I would be hesitant to add fermented juices as this may cause malicious bacteria to form that can clog up your system. It is best to use hydroponic-specific products when going this route.

    Curious is there a difference between hydroponic based fertilizers vs soil based fertilizers vs aeroponic based fertilizers ? And thanks I do get N P K. On a different note by your logic high K would be great for root based veg's as well as nitrogen but less so for P unless you wanted flowers / seeds such as for fruit trees. Or orinental flowers / colorful bloomed flowers on bushes , trees , or house potted flowers. So if your doing carrots , beets , radishes , turnips ,...etc you probably favor a little higher K value with your N value high but with lower P value

    Can you mix CN and nPk in one tank? Will it precipitate and for the unsoluble parts?

    • @ZipGrowInc
      @ZipGrowInc  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question Artur. In short, yes you can mix CN and NPK in one tank as long as you follow the appropriate dosage recommendations. You also want to make sure that each component is fully dissolved before you add the next. If you are mixing highly concentrated stock solutions, they will precipitate out, so you have to keep them separate until they are in your large volume of diluted solution.

    Like is the same n p k valued soil fertilizer equivalent to uses as the same n p k hydroponic fertilizer or can there be distinction that would cause issues ? Just trying to figure out how portable an n p k value fertilizer from soil to hydro to aero could usually be. Maybe normally you have to get 3 different fertilizers with the same n p k but for different applications one for hydro , one for aero , one for soil. Not sure typically how that goes

    Question!! If i have 1lbs urea (46% nitrogen) wouldnt i just add .46 lbs urea to 1lbs water to get 46% nitrogen water?
    I dont know the solubility rate on urea in water but my product says its high

    • @extendedwalrus9330
      @extendedwalrus9330 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      why would you need such a high concentration of nitrogen water?

    • @krmagamerzzog6670
      @krmagamerzzog6670 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its creating a nutrient mix (like a bottle of mygrow) once you have 46% nitrogen water (1 pound water to 1 pound D.A.P) devide 46 by whatever number to equal 3 (46÷16) then figure out how many ml in a gallon of water (3785) 3785÷16=236. The final equation in word form is (every gallon of fresh water needs 16ml of nutrient mix for a total of 236 batches)
      That math is meant to create 3% nitrogen in your fresh\feed water. Follow the same steps to add P and K.
      I found that though my math is great; i suck at chemistry and its hard to get the mix to react and combine together. My veg mix worked perfect and plants loved it but my flower mix never combined and stayed as sand in the bottom. Same products so idk what went wrong

    • @krmagamerzzog6670
      @krmagamerzzog6670 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont recommend this though after trying oersonally because youre plant still need things like zinc and such to put the nutes to good use.
      I ended up sticking with cauliflower water and egg yolk water as needed. (Actually suprisingly bioavailable as is)

    Is 9 -3- 6 the same as 18-6-12?

      Yes, but double the concentration. So, if you are using 100 gm of 9-3-6 then use only 50 gm of 18-6-12

      One more thing, should we add epsom salt in Hydroponic with npk? In what proportion?

    Can I just use lawn fertilizer?

    • @RideForLifeCR250R
      @RideForLifeCR250R 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure.. on your lawn, not for plants. It's in the name, "lawn" fertilizer

    • @Takim0n
      @Takim0n 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      RideForLifeCR250R so grass isn’t plants? It’s the same chemical fertilizer you would put in a garden. The only difference is fish. I can see ammonium nitrate not being ideal. I use KNO3 all the time in my planted aquarium. The ingredients in the starter fertilizer I have has other other than these same chemicals I use in my aquariums.

    • @RideForLifeCR250R

      @@Takim0n just because both are green, don't mean they have the same make up/take up.
      I guess what I should've stated is that there are many better viable fertilizers on the market to feed houseplants because the lawn fert is best optimized for grass requirements whereas each species plant require different amounts of nutes at different stages throughout plant(s) life cycle.

    The numbers are not accurate to base what it is precent is. Confused? For example '
    Company Xyz sale a product of 75, 20, 75,
    You will be get only the actual product of 19, 5, 19, as analysis of true product

    • @mevofr

      Where the hell would you have seen a "75, 20, 75" ???

      The NPK number is always a true percentage. If a product lists a N-P-K of 4-4-4, the fertilizer will always contain 4% of each of those three nutrients. The section on the package that says "guaranteed analysis" will list the exact percentage of N, P, and K that is present in the fertilizer, and what source that particular nutrient is derived from ( I gave an example in the video of the Nitrogen in DynaGro being derived from two different sources, the sum of those two sources being the total nitrogen percentage displayed in the NPK number). The guaranteed analysis will also list percentages of other macronutrients and micronutrients, if they are present in the fertilizer.

      @sanhess854 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was just an example total production of product (12,45,0 43,0,0 20,0,0 0,0,60 etc) just cause one product say G.A. Dose mean inclusion of all products

    • @sanhess854
      @sanhess854 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ethan W not all products are true percent that are not "guaranteed Analysis" just saying I'm coming from the chemical fertilizer industry just saying

      Tulips Moran he communicated his point very clearly and in a manner that is not boring to listen to. You're just here to think you're a better speaker or showing off your Speech 101 skills so please fuck off to your next Speech class to show everyone there how "good" you communicate... We here are simply just trying to understand what NPK in fertilizer means you idiot
