This version is, in my opinion, the best one. The way he sings it feels 'weak', and not in a bad way. The weak, tired, and broken sound that perfectly suits the song. Love it.
100% Agree. The Pentatonix cover that youtube keeps recommending utterly fails on this. They're all great singers, but they had to make the song sound "powerful" which is just not the way to do this song.

Check out Dying On The Vine, I Keep A Close Watch (Music For A New Society version), Chinese Envoy, Amsterdam or Antartica Starts Here amongst many other great ballads he's written. Both,studio recorded or live renditions of these songs reveal a true master in John Cale.
I don't quite understand why John Cals's version is not "more known" since that was the version that was used in Shrek and some other movies. Most of the other artists who covered the song most of the time took John Cale's arrangement as basis. Like Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright.
