Symphony No. 2 in C minor, "Asrael", Op. 27 (1905-06)
    1. Andante sostenuto (0:00)
    2. Andante (13:48)
    3. Vivace (20:08)
    4. Adagio (32:02)
    5. Adagio e maestoso (42:34)
The National Orchestra of Belgium conducted by Walter Weller
Suk began to compose his funeral symphony at the beginning of 1905, about eight months after Dvořák's death. The composition was titled after the Old Testament angel of death Asrael. The work is in five movements; the sketches of three movements were finished less than a half year later. On 6 July 1905, while Suk was in the middle of the work, his wife Otilie died] Although the composition was to be also a celebration of Dvořák's life and work, the desolated composer rejected the optimistic tone of the rest of the work. The complete score was finished on 4 October 1906. The work was dedicated "to the exalted memory of Dvořák and Otilie". Suk dedicated the last two movements to Otilie.
The symphony was premièred on 3 February 1907 at the Prague National Theatre, conducted by Karel Kovařovic. Karel Hoffmann and Jiří Herold, members of the Czech Quartet, attended the premiere as the concertmasters of the orchestra of the National Theatre.

What a stylistic departure from his first symphony. To me Suk is the musical bridge between Dvorak and Janacek

Tremendous, sumptuous, fantastic, Superb; Andante: like an eye gazing fixedly into space.

6 minutes towards the end of the video and I had to go listen to something else. Boy am I glad I came back, especially around the 51:30 mark that's some of the most beautiful orchestration I've ever heard. The melody later on reminds me a little of Faure too. Really magical piece.

Atonal. So strangely alien to the tradition of his mentor, Dvořak.

But it _isn't_ atonal. It's in C minor for most of its runtime before resolving to C major. It would be more correct to call it very _chromatic_ because that's certainly true. But nothing about its harmonic process would suggest that Suk is actively avoiding a definitive key.

The final movement reminds me of Shostakovich.

Lizst's Dante Symphony would be an ideal companion piece to pair up this work with as a set of live concert repertoire performances whereby the Dante Sym is played during the 1st half of the concert followed by Suk's Asrael after the intermission on Halloween night with the program being repeated the following evening on the eve of All Souls Day. Now that would be a spectacular post-Covid mid-autumnal concert season treat indeed to be undertaken by any renowned orchestra with reputable standing!!!

As this is a video from my old channel I don't have the info anymore. I remember vaguely that it was a Dutch orchestra very probably Dutch Radio Philharmonic.
