      I don’t like Karl Malone for multiple reasons…but in his defense, at the time there wasn’t as much info on it as there is now. It was still very much taboo and almost exclusively being blamed on one specific community, so almost everyone was ignorant about it. And also the anti-retroviral treatments weren’t as good as they are now.

    I always had mad respect for Dennis Rodman anyway but there was a sequence in an All-Star game where he bodied up Magic and he was like I could care less about your diagnosis I am going to play tough D on you and you are not going to score on me. It appeared that Worm was doing this as a direct result of Mailman’s voiced apprehension. What Worm did spoke volumes.

    At the time of Magic's diagnosis it was pretty much publicly thought that once you had HIV you would probably die within a few years and that was where everybody thought Magic's situation was heading which made it pretty surreal. He certainly had quite a few years left where he would have been playing at a very high level which sucked for NBA fans because he is the greatest point guard of all time. He handled it like a champ though and he's still alive and well 31 years later.

    I always think of Magic whenever people talk about the best "what could have been's" had it not been for injuries. HIV isn't an injury, but I think people forget that Magic was still great during his last full season (19.4/ 7.0/12.5 splits) before his first retirement. The man could definitely go a few more seasons.

      You know I am a HUGE Celtics fan and have been one for over 40 years and I have said it many times, Magic is the best player I have ever seen. Yes, I loved Larry but every time the ball was in Magic’s hands I thought, ‘Oh, boy.’ He completely revolutionized the 1 position. Whoever thought a man, 6’9, 6’10 could distribute and dribble like that. He was a walking triple-double. Like he told Unc he had another at least 5 productive years left. Larry’s body was cooked after the Dream Team, so he had to give it up. All those extended playoff runs throughout the 80s took its toll.

    It’s good to hear Magic’s side of the story. I thought Malone was apprehensive about the HIV diagnosis because I specifically remember how Malone used to play and how he cemented a certain kind of reputation when he made Isiah “Zeke” Thomas “accidentally” bleed in an NBA game.
    And the NBA rules were very different back then. Fisticuffs were a lot common in NBA games and those were assessed as regular fouls.
    But also in the late 1980s, not much medical science was known about HIV and Aids. It was once believed that the incurable diseases could be transmitted via sweat or having any contact with bodily fluids in public toilets or locker rooms.

    Idk about being #1 in assists all time. Not saying John Stockton was better, because he wasn’t, but he is wayyyyy ahead of anyone else in assists. That’s one of those records that it’s hard to imagine it ever being broken.

    • @QuestionEverything562
      @QuestionEverything562 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree, I mean Magic would have had to have kept playing until his 40s to beat that because in terms of in season durability, Stockton is the durability king. Him and Malone only missed like a handful of games in their careers. I really doubt Magic could have played enough games to stay ahead of Stockton. But anybody that watched the 80s and 90s knows that Magic is the greatest passer of all-time, he made dazzling passes to spaces where it looked like nobody was there and then suddenly Byron Scott or James Worthy filled that space out of nowhere lol. The only player that even remotely sniffs Magic's creative spectacular passing was Jason Kidd, but he couldn't do it as much as Magic. I got Stockton 2nd as my all-time passer just out of being a passing factory machine. Stockton was always making the correct play or pass.

    • @ShengYu1995
      @ShengYu1995 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Old heads always exaggerate. Stockton has 15k, Magic had 10k, he would have needed almost 5-6 seasons where he averaged at least 12 assists per game and he was already 32 at that point (also have to factor in ability to stay healthy when older). Same with he said he would have won more championships, no he wouldnt lmao. He got swept by Jordan in 91 finals, lakers were in decline after. He was out of his prime too. He wouldnt have even made it out of the West, let alone win against Jordan again when the bulls are even better and lakers worse.

    Magic was still improving when he retired believe it or not. His jump shot and 3 point shots were becoming more consistent, to where he was the guy you wanted taking the last shot, always, no matter who is on the team, from anywhere on the court. Had he stayed healthy, I don't think the bulls 3 peat the first time, and we see some epic Finals games between the Bulls and a re-tooled Lakers (Barkley was a trade target before Magic got diagnosed).

  • @AJGFTL

    Yeah everyone wants Magic to be Assists leader--makes sense, but just did the analysis--he averaged 900+ assists his last few years prior o him missing 4 years--thus 3600+ assists. He ended up with 10,141 Assists career--Stockton had 15,806...so he would have been a 2K short, perhaps played a little longer than 36 but rarely any of those guys did back then due to fitness and conditioning compared to today...and the league was Rougher--aint no pitty pat league like now..

    Hindsight is always 20/20 especially in situations like this. I'm old enough to remember this situation and Karl Malone was the only one man enough to actually say what EVERYONE was thinking and wanted to say.
    I remember Karl talking about this then and over the years, and the issue was on the Dream TEam they were on the same team, but head to head he was going to be the one bumping into him, ramming up against him, pushing up against him 16 times a season. He was scared he could get it. Even Magic admitted in this interview education needed to occur because even the head of the NBA didn't know nor want him back.
    Now, in 1992-1993 people still didn't fully understand HIV because Dr. Fauci was purposely freaking out the country with HIV just like he did with the Wuhan Flu.
    Bottom line, it was a concern everyone that had to play against Magic had. Karl was just the only one that came out in the public and was brave enough to share his mind.
    Finally....Lakers were never going to win another championship. The 1991 finals they got absolutely smoked by the Bulls and that team fell apart right after that.

    What people don't realize is that Magic came back to the game in 1996 and averaged 15/6/7/1 on great efficiency at age 36, 4 years removed from professional basketball and he only started in 9 games playing less than 30 minutes. He also had two 20 point games in the playoffs back to back and then followed it up with a 13 assist game. They still lost 3-1 to the Rockets and not everything was going good for Magic, but his team wasn't that great, this was literally the season before Shaq and Kobe.
    Magic could have played easily from 1992 to 1995, because he played well for the context in 1996, that's 4 extra seasons to pad his stats and make himself even more of a legend, I don't think he would have won a ring or gotten the all time assists record, but he certainly would have been held in higher regard as an unanimous top 5 player of all time unlike today when people place him anywhere from 4th to 9th.
