I use a white background for photographing clothing for eBay and have never got the background to be pure white. I am going to implement this technique right away to hopefully get better results. Thank you for explaining the histogram.

OMG! I just watched this again and learned something so basic, so simple, I cannot believe I never thought of this before. I use my Canon ST-E3 transmitter to trigger Canon receivers I have plugged in to my studio strobes. I never thought about using a flash on camera as you did here. Could have saved me a few dollars. I will definitely be trying that next time I shoot. Thanks!

When you can correct the underexposure by adding light or increasing ISO, why increase ISO? That also increases noise. I always shoot in the lowest ISO possible when I have full control over the lights.
@@drpainsjourney But modern cameras produce very good pictures at very high ISOs. And again, what exactly do you intend to do with the picture? If it's going to be printed on a huge poster, then ISO will be a problem but if it's not going into print, there's no need to query too much about ISO. Last, ISO 800 is not high at all
True. Iso is the last resort when all the others have failed, but in that particular scenario he chose to use f11 and slow shutter spead to capture ambient light so you have to think not only the correct exposure but the exposure effect. You choose the exposure parameters accordingly. In order to properly expose the face i would have also used a light on her.

Great method for getting the wall absolutely white. There's no way to know if you went too far, though, unless you had it just under and turned it up just one stop. I know you can prove me wrong, as you always do when I question you, but I feel that you should have added lights to Demi. Just using whatever light was in the room doesn't sculpt her face at all. I like a little more control than that. But thanks for another great video!
Hi! You are totally right about adding lights at the front for the subjects. We intentionally do not want to add main lights in this episode (yet) because we want to share that workflow In the coming episode! This episode is about background light. And talking abt going pushing too far, you indeed can,... and you will end up with serious flare! So, don't push the ISO too much :) Also, keep tuned in... as we launch that episode on adding main light. You will love that technique :) Thanks for always being here, Miley,... :) :) :)

Hello Andrew, I used your technique to get the perfect white wall. What I noticed is that there is a haze on my subject. It's not clean and warm as it is without the monoblock. I think I know what it is. It seems to be the reflection of the backdrop bouncing off the white walls in my at-home studio. What do you think?

I really enjoy your TH-cam Videos. Your method of teaching really works well for me. I use a D7000 so some features are not as extensive as your camera but I still get the concept. I've been a bit confused with all these people on TH-cam recommending to use auto ISO, so I've been trying it but a lot of my images ended up with too much noise. I've set my Maximum to ISO 1600 and the lowest is ISO 100 and the minimum Shutter speed is 1/30. If I'm able to shoot in Manual shouldn't I just adjust my own ISO?

You forget to mention that by upping your iso that fixes the white background but you lose dynamic range when editing raw files. I would suggest upping flash power over raising your iso as everyone know the lowest iso tends to be the cameras highest dynamic range.

Please allow me to ask what might be 2 "stupid questions' as I am new to studio photography. When the histogram showed that the background was still not totally white; why did you choose to increase the ISO rather than increase the power of the strobes? When Demi was under-exposed, why did you once again increase the ISO to capture more ambient light rather than add a main light? Setting the ISO up high has its drawbacks, right? I have not seen any other video using this approach. Thank you.

When you can correct the underexposure by adding light or increasing ISO, why increase ISO? That also increases noise. I always shoot in the lowest ISO possible when I have full control over the lights.
I can only agree, raise ISO is not what we want at all, we don't want noise in our photo... So how to do then?
@@drpainsjourney But modern cameras produce very good pictures at very high ISOs. And again, what exactly do you intend to do with the picture? If it's going to be printed on a huge poster, then ISO will be a problem but if it's not going into print, there's no need to query too much about ISO. Last, ISO 800 is not high at all
True. Iso is the last resort when all the others have failed, but in that particular scenario he chose to use f11 and slow shutter spead to capture ambient light so you have to think not only the correct exposure but the exposure effect. You choose the exposure parameters accordingly. In order to properly expose the face i would have also used a light on her.
why adding iso instead of opening up aperture? f8 would do the trick, too, wouldn't it? (lightening up the model)

Why do you use F11, if you use F5.6 you can lower the hotshoe flash to save the batteties, right?

Great method for getting the wall absolutely white. There's no way to know if you went too far, though, unless you had it just under and turned it up just one stop. I know you can prove me wrong, as you always do when I question you, but I feel that you should have added lights to Demi. Just using whatever light was in the room doesn't sculpt her face at all. I like a little more control than that. But thanks for another great video!
Hi! You are totally right about adding lights at the front for the subjects. We intentionally do not want to add main lights in this episode (yet) because we want to share that workflow In the coming episode! This episode is about background light. And talking abt going pushing too far, you indeed can,... and you will end up with serious flare! So, don't push the ISO too much :) Also, keep tuned in... as we launch that episode on adding main light. You will love that technique :) Thanks for always being here, Miley,... :) :) :)

Hello Andrew, I used your technique to get the perfect white wall. What I noticed is that there is a haze on my subject. It's not clean and warm as it is without the monoblock. I think I know what it is. It seems to be the reflection of the backdrop bouncing off the white walls in my at-home studio. What do you think?

I really enjoy your TH-cam Videos. Your method of teaching really works well for me. I use a D7000 so some features are not as extensive as your camera but I still get the concept. I've been a bit confused with all these people on TH-cam recommending to use auto ISO, so I've been trying it but a lot of my images ended up with too much noise. I've set my Maximum to ISO 1600 and the lowest is ISO 100 and the minimum Shutter speed is 1/30. If I'm able to shoot in Manual shouldn't I just adjust my own ISO?

You forget to mention that by upping your iso that fixes the white background but you lose dynamic range when editing raw files. I would suggest upping flash power over raising your iso as everyone know the lowest iso tends to be the cameras highest dynamic range.
Newbie question. How were you able to get Demi properly exposed at iso200 when using flash while you had to bump the iso to 800 when using atrobe?

Hi i have a question demi was under exposed you increased iso but if demi was over exposed what you will do as decreasing iso will affect background
Decrease iso, and then increase flash power... or change aperture higher sir.
Please allow me to ask what might be 2 "stupid questions' as I am new to studio photography. When the histogram showed that the background was still not totally white; why did you choose to increase the ISO rather than increase the power of the strobes? When Demi was under-exposed, why did you once again increase the ISO to capture more ambient light rather than add a main light? Setting the ISO up high has its drawbacks, right? I have not seen any other video using this approach. Thank you.
