  • Chickens and other poultry with access to pasture are healthier and happier. Steve & Brian run down what makes a healthy pasture, and what you should plant to keep your flock foraging healthy.

    Great video, I love this topic as I'm always looking for ways to make my flock more self sufficient. I live in the rural Ozarks and my chickens eat persimmons, blackberries, gooseberries and mulberries that grow around our property.

    Experience with alfalfa. I was told to put alfalfa pellets in my vegetable garden to enhance the soil.
    Truth: Alfalfa pellets will grow into alfalfa grass, ruining the garden!!
    So, I put it in the pasture as it’s hardy with a good root structure.
    The chickens love it no matter how old it is, though we do keep the pasture mowed.
    It’s a wonderful companion to clover, too.

      My farm was an alfalfa field a few years before we built here. It still grows and gives me fits in the garden!

      @@HobbyFarmGuys Definitely! I can’t graze horses on it. Very hardy stuff that regrows in the blink of an eye. I did put it where the tractors cross from one field to another because they tear up the field grass and it takes months to recover.

      Would rabbit alfalfa pellets grow?

    • @lrg613
      @lrg613 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CalmCowBell Never tried “rabbit alfalfa”. Just the bag of alfalfa pellets which I assumed was a food pellet for livestock.

      @@lrg613 Thank you for your reply. Rabbit pellets are too small to have seed, so phew! What a relief!

    Oops….I may need to eliminate my pretty Foxglove plants….altho the hens leave those alone. You are SUCH a great resource for our chickens! Thank you, gentlemen. 🐓🐓🐓

    What do the Hobby Farm Guys think about grazing boxes? What type of seeds would you guys recommend for grazing boxes? Any tips/tricks or issues to be aware of/taken into consideration that you might share? Your videos and insights are constantly a great source to turn to, so I thought I would get your take on the grazing boxes I keep hearing about. Thanks in advance for any information you may provide. Keep on cluckin' my friends!

    Interesting. I've never seen a video or read an article on this topic before. If I left my ground to grow what it does naturally, I would have a poultry pasture (well...minus the grains)!

      Another guy to look up is Joel Salatin. He is more on the "farming for a business" end of things, but he is also one of those rare treasures that shares a TON of information.
      I have read one of his books 'You Can Farm' which I thought was excellent, but again, geared more towards the business side of a farm.

    awesome ...what you mean by 10sqft per bird per week..does it mean 10sqft needs rest for a week until that becomes forgeable for a chicken ?

    • @HobbyFarmGuys
      @HobbyFarmGuys  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, correct. Although the recovery time may vary depending on things like rain, and exactly what is planted.

    I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I can't get dandelions to grow anywhere but my lawn! 😂 I used to free range until the coyotes overran our area. Now I clip wings and have approximately a 100ftx20ft run, of field fence and T-post, that I can move, if need be, for my large flock. I keep a smaller flock in a hoop coop with a shorter section of field fence i moved when needed. I also toss their scratch feed around their pastures. Sometimes it seeds and grows. I've got volunteer corn and tomatoes coming up in old run sections! Another great topic guys!
    Any ya'll use Starkline or Premier chicken fence? If so, any real difference? Honest answers, no sales pitches, please.

    Interesting.. by the way how many days the grass need to grow become 3-5 inch?

    • @HobbyFarmGuys
      @HobbyFarmGuys  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Good question! It depends on lots of things such as the type of grass, your soil and water. Typically, if planted from seed it will take about 5-6 weeks to get to that size.

    I’m in Northern Ca (Sacramento) and trying to find a year round grass we can water since we are on a well system. I want to free range my chickens year round as well as a few goats coming in to the pasture every few weeks.

      I would contact your local extension office for advice. They should be able to help with finding the right grass to plant for your needs and situation.
