  • A new report based on a joint investigation by Pro-Publica and Nashville Public Radio uncovers a decade -long system and practice of arresting and jailing mostly Black children in Rutherford, Tennessee.
Donna Scott Davenport, juvenile court judge in the county, sometimes refers to herself as "The mother of the county" and allegedly directed police to arrest children at an alarming rate in Rutherford. The rate of arrest was a staggering 48%t. Co-author of the report, Meribah Knight of Nashville Public Radio, joined “BNC Live” with Tashanae Whitlow to discuss the lasting impact of what experts call the “school-to-prison" pipeline has on a child’s future as well as their mental health.

Also wondering whether that could be seen as kidnap/trafficking. As well, if any of those children were made to do ANY level/kind of work, that would be child exploitation, and could it then be parlayed to slavery?

“I assert most unhesitatingly, that the religion of the south is a mere covering for the most horrid crimes, - a justifier of the most appalling barbarity, - a sanctifier of the most hateful frauds, - and a dark shelter under, which the darkest, foulest, grossest, and most infernal deeds of the slaveholders find the strongest protection. Were I to be again reduced to the chains of slavery, next to enslavement, I should regard being the slave of a religious master the greatest calamity that could befall me. For of all slaveholders with whom I have ever met, religious slaveholders are the worst. I have ever found them the meanest and basest, the most cruel and cowardly, of all others.” - Frederick Douglass
    Different year, same old racism.
