- Holi. Phagwah. You may have seen images of this holiday from India, or even participated in some half-baked house party version of it in your own city. I had never been to either, but thankfully Guyana had me covered. Every year Guyana hosts a huge Phagwah festival that's celebrated by the whole country, and believe me, there's a lot more drinking at this one than the original. I had to go and check it out.
Somehow, I survived enough to film the experience.

I've been living in Barbados for some time now. I'm from India. I really miss India and Holi. But I'll be going to Guyana for a year or so. And I don't think I will miss India at all in Guyana
As a Guyanese, this was so fun to watch. This is how we do it. We are called the land of many waters and 6 races, and in the beginning of this video you picked up various colors...this is sort of an amalgamation of these 6 races. We are a microcosm of the melting pot...I am glad that you went out all at the Track. In Guyana, we are known for our hospitality. Now tell meh that yuh had some seven curry afterward. One love skunt.

Phagwah in Suriname is exactly the same way. I once went to a house party for the feast and someone had drenched my head with Black Cat white rum. I was drinking beer and smelled like a rum bar. On my way home I was stopped for speeding and the officer was about to take me to the police station when I told him why I smelled the way I did. I also mentioned that the party was at the house of Major Maharaj, a high ranking police officer and gave him the house number to call. He looked at the number, kept the paper, my license and told me to drive safely home and pick up my license the next day at the station. Wheeh.
I was cycling in Paramaribo during holi and was invited for some snacks and a bit of rum by a couple of families ( and doused in colour)while taking photos of temples around the city...Great experience

It’s a multicultural nation. Even though there are more Indo-Guyanese in Guyana, the country is a melting pot of cultures. People of Indian descent are mostly found outside of Georgetown and live in Berbice, Demerara, and Essequibo counties. They are descendants of indentured labourers from the Hindi belt of modern day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, with minorities from Punjab (some from Pakistan and Himachal Pradesh), Tamil Nadu and others. The capital is where most Afro-Guyanese reside. Afro-Guyanese are the descendants of slaves from West Africa, mostly from Ghana & Nigeria. A lot people are mixed-race with with variations from different ethnicities. The interior of the country has a more Native American influence. There are also Portuguese Guyanese who came from Madeira fleeing the economic crisis of the late 1800s, followed by Chinese and Europeans (mainly British, Scottish, Irish and Dutch). Most of them emigrated from British Guiana to the United Kingdom, United States and Canada during independence.

Awesome 😂, that's how all our festivals and holidays be in Guyana, no one sees you as different, we all see each other as the same, same for religious holidays, believe it or not but most people celebrate each other's holiday every if it's not there religion

At 0:30 I think I remember the Police Officer from years ago at the Home Office, when I over-stayed my Visa. She was very helpful, but the Minster of Home Affairs was quite nervous as he hastily processed my overstay. And, just has he did, several police vehicles showed up and he nicked out the back door in a dead run to avoid a political arrest.
