@@merrybright5732 Not really a middle class mentality. More of a frugal mentality of making every penny count. Even very poor people don't generally buy food on a daily bases. @@herowither12354 i believe that with a bit of tact and nuance noone would reply to the comment above with what you did and i hope that in the future you wont either
Those were the smallest packs of milk and eggs (and therefore the least economical in terms of amount per penny), but buying the larger packs would have blown too much of the budget
Wizardly we do have up to 6 pints of milk but that was just a one pint of milk can get way bigger packets of stiff eggs come in 6 and 12 or the cheap bad eggs in the bigger plastic boxes think they are 15 eggs
Maybe add a little salt to the porridge next time, can get free salt packets at many places. Keep all the sugar with the pear reduction versus adding it to the rice. It'll possibly make the sweetness of the pears stand out a bit
I did get some strange looks in Sainsbury's buying that single sprout and single mushroom (I had to go back and find a smaller one of each as the first mushroom I picked up was like 10p)
That pear pun about them coming in pairs made me pause and contemplate smashing my router just to escape from ever accidentally hearing it again. Well done, solid eye-rollingly good pun.
Free range is bullshit anyway. They are kept in slightly larger cages and allowed a small amount of time outside and called "free range". It doesn't solve any of the ethical issues with eggs.
The breakfast looked lovely. I would really have liked it with some ground almonds in but I don't think that would fit in the budget. I would happily eat the lunch too. I thought that looked nice & healthy. I could smell those parsnips & onions for the evening meal from Devon.
I'm honestly curious if that's the case? It reminds me of when I was 14 and thought a single apple cost £1 where in reality that was the price for a kilogramme of them- they were considered expensive too!
Creek Ie Yeah, in the U.S. you’d have way more trouble. You can’t even really get 2 packs of ramen with the 41 cents mentioned above(the cheapest I’ve found one pack is 25 cents near me, but maybe cheaper elsewhere). It also depends on the state, but I can’t even imagine trying to get groceries for a weekend with 5 - 6 dollars.
@@loganweatherly5081 I haven't seen ramen in small packages without seasoning packets before either. I have some 25 cent packets at my local store but I imagine if the were plain they'd probably be 20 cents.

Yet another interesting video concept and series from you, AS. There is something about your videos that is just so very calming. Always a pleasure to watch what you get up to - so thanks!
Got myself a new job recently which gives me great hours but I've taken somewhat of a pay cut.. And these budget videos have saved my arse! You're a saint!
same budgets here
It makes my heart so so happy to see a husband offer his wife equal portions. In my family the men always get a much larger serving at every meal, as well as first dibs on seconds. It's just very wholesome to see a couple interact so lovingly! Gives me hope for my own marriage someday.
It makes sense, tho, since men are larger on average, and thus require more food for energy.
@@herowither12354 i believe that with a bit of tact and nuance noone would reply to the comment above with what you did and i hope that in the future you wont either
Men have a faster metabolism than women on average and thus require more food since their bodies burn more calories with less work.
I feel like food prices are higher where I live. I don’t think I could buy quite that much with $5
Yes, our prices are at least 10X those prices in the US. :(
Dawn Chattin vegetables are cheap here in the uk so we don’t have an excuse not to have 5 a day haha
@@dawnchattin5935 Look at those portion/package sizes though! they look so much smaller in the UK. (like the milk and eggs)
You can also swipe ketchup, mayo and mustard sachets at the hot food section but try to leave some for people's hash browns and chicken :p
Imagine waking up and hearing your s.o say hey, we've only got $1 for this weekend, let's go buy some rice, ramen and a single mushroom. ;D
I did get some strange looks in Sainsbury's buying that single sprout and single mushroom (I had to go back and find a smaller one of each as the first mushroom I picked up was like 10p)

Move over Binging with Babish, there's a new cooking show on the block
Love the fact that you were on a budget but you still picked up free ranged eggs :)
Only in the UK does such a luxury exist
Free range is bullshit anyway. They are kept in slightly larger cages and allowed a small amount of time outside and called "free range". It doesn't solve any of the ethical issues with eggs.
Not cages there is no top to it and they all are cramped together on a much larger scale a bunch of the time just as bad tho
Got to research the place if you want it to be ethical
In Australia, free range is usually the same price or less than caged.
I love it when Jenny participates. I like her and Eva! ❤️

Man I just gotta say... I really love your channel, I’m so happy I found it a little while ago. Thanks for everything you post, I dig it
Watching 3y after this was created, the increase in cost of the food is shocking.
The breakfast looked lovely. I would really have liked it with some ground almonds in but I don't think that would fit in the budget. I would happily eat the lunch too. I thought that looked nice & healthy. I could smell those parsnips & onions for the evening meal from Devon.
I see the peel from the fruits and vegetables being tossed and here I save them in the freezer to turn into homemade broth.
Me: wow that was cool, I wonder if I can do that here in America.
*stares down at 41¢ worth of coins*
Me: I... I can’t even buy an apple with this...
I'm honestly curious if that's the case? It reminds me of when I was 14 and thought a single apple cost £1 where in reality that was the price for a kilogramme of them- they were considered expensive too!
Just go to your local graveyard
Ramen at my walmart is 18c. Thank goodness because I was down to 89c and grabbed ramen (18c) and a can of tuna (68c). Grabbed a handful of condiments from the gas station (mayonnaise, relish, and pepper) so I had tuna salad and ramen soup.
