It's a dud, obviously, but it's above all the assumed pleasure of its director Tsui Hark, to voluntarily sabotage his own film and to humiliate Van Damme, then in the middle of an ego crisis. Understand that the previous (and first) collaboration with the American studios and the Belgian star was a real hell for the director, without control over his footage and having difficulty tolerating the star's behavior. When the time came to propose a new collaboration to Tsui Hark, he accepted willingly, but the studios and Van Damme had no idea of the quagmire they had just gotten themselves into. Hark then gave it his all, experimenting with as many hallucinatory transitions and kamikaze shots, making filming and editing the field of limitless experimentation. The best way to appreciate this film is to fully grasp the irony, and to see JCVD's ego suffer.
