He has so many Great songs. I couldnt Pick just one , maybe 10. As a song writer he is an Observer of Human Nature. From Stiletto to My Life to an Innocent Man... Now iam going play those 3 songs. Thanks for The prompt. Have a Good morning!
One, two, one, two, three, four Some love is just a lie of the heart The cold remains of what began with a passionate start And they may not want it to end But it will it's just a question of when I've lived long enough to have learned The closer you get to the fire the more you get burned But that won't happen to us Cause it's always been a matter of trust I know you're an emotional girl It took a lot for you to not lose your faith in this world I can't offer you proof But you're going to face a moment of truth It's hard when you're always afraid You just recover when another belief is betrayed So break my heart if you must It's a matter of trust You can't go the distance With too much resistance I know you have doubts But for god's sake don't shut me out This time you've got nothing to lose You can take it, you can leave it, whatever you choose I won't hold back anything And I'll walk away a fool or a king Some love is just a lie of the mind It's make believe until its only a matter of time And some might have learned to adjust But then it never was a matter of trust I'm sure you're aware love We've both had our share of believing too long When the whole situation was wrong Some love is just a lie of the soul A constant battle for the ultimate state of control After you've heard lie upon lie There can hardly be a question of why Some love is just a lie of the heart The cold remains of what began with a passionate start But that can't happen to us Cause it's always been a matter of trust It's a matter of trust It's always been a matter of trust It's a matter of trust Cause it's always been a matter of trust
Interesting after having heard this song literally hundreds of times over the years that I just realized this song doesn't really have a verse+chorus structure--- or really a chorus at all, except for the rondeau-like recurrence of the phrase "a matter of trust".
The older I get, the more I appreciate the perfection and wisdom of Billy Joel. This is one of my favorite songs and it has gotten me through some of the roughest patches of my life.
This was harder rocking then his previous efforts but was also proof that Billy could make a great hit song even when he stepped out from behind the piano.
He's always had rockers in the mould of this song, such as Big Shot, I Go To Extremes, It's Still Rock And Roll To Me, Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway), No Man's Land, Prelude/Angry Young Man, Only The Good Die Young, Pressure, Sometimes A Fantasy, That's Not Her Style and You May Be Right but because he is so versatile and can write any kind of song from Ballads, Blues, Country, Folk, Gospel, Jazz and so on but some of his bigger hits are ballads, then some people might not know the other stuff.
This song and music track from Billy Joel is so excellent and so beautiful-But unfortunately the year 1986 was one of the worst years of my life, when this music from Billy Joel came out!😝🤔🤨
I adore this song. It was introduced to me by a dear friend of mine who died last October 21th,so it now reminds me of him. Love the song. Miss my friend
That’s David Brown on lead guitar 🎸 He was Billy’s guitarist from 1979-1989. There’s clips of him playing this live on Letterman. He also reunited with Billy briefly in 2022 at MSG when they did “This is the Time”.
I was 8 when this song was released. I taped if off of the radio and listened to it over and over and over...lol. Who else wishes we were back in the good ol' days??
So many songs these days seem so vacuous and thin like a bubblegum bubble. The lyrics of this song were so well-chosen and emphatic. This song absolutely feels sung from the heart. And the other incredible thing is that Billy makes the syllables flow so well and he sings it with power. I even love how he sings the "1-2-3-4" at the beginning of the song.
I love your sense of the standouts from Billy Joel! I used to play 'I Go To Extremes', 'A Matter of Trust', and 'Allentown', in reverse order as written, to pump me up. Yes, 'Allentown' is primarily piano, which is why I love Billy (Bruce Hornsby, too, for a different style), but it includes a sensational guitar solo near the end. Play on! Lol.
Whenever someone says that Billy Joel was "just another dumb pop musician" I just show them this song. There's plenty of other examples, like The Stranger, but this is the best one.
IDK how or why it works this way, but it's as if God anoints the very greatest songwriters. Most of us listen to music - we hear it. Billy Joel - he feels it on a level most of us don't comprehend - the music just flows through him from a higher place.
This wasn't the first time I heard it, but the one standout memory I have of this song was having it playing in The Sims "House Party" during a party that the first family I ever created was holding, everyone was dancing in the living room when the "Celebrity Guest" showed up in a limo outside. They all dropped everything and ran into the yard. I legit thought it was the song that triggered the appearance!
I love this song, it means so much to me, my mother thought us to speak and understand english because my sisters and I were such melomanics, just like her (and dad but he liked other kind of music, not rock) now my mom has trouble remembering certain things and I feel sad and just want to cherish all those great moments we have had together where music was such an important part of our lives. I love you, Mom

The kind of humankind Trust, which is facing a moment of truth. God bless SouthAmerica this time. Thanks Billy J. A song from an honest musician USA heart.
Magnificent 80's and early 90's. There was the Voice and the music. As of recently, I barely come across a good voice or performance or a DAMN GOOD music!!!!!
Thank you Billy Joel you made the music world a better place for us all your music is just simply amazing saw you in 2019 in Fenway it was an unforgettable concert
There is still (in the 21st century) so much to say about “A Matter Of Trust” (1986), in which Billy Joel lyrically emphasizes that TRUE LOVE MUST BE BASED ON TRUST, KEY TO A RELATIONSHIP. The composer meant this piece to be empathetic towards women. He stated : “It’s similar in the intention as ‘An Innocent Man’ [1984], where the lyrics say, ‘I know you’ve been betrayed, I know you’ve had lovers who’ve let you down. I’m not that guy.’ It was the same thing with ‘A Matter Of Trust’ - ‘I want you to trust me, I know you’ve had it rough. I’ll do my best to prove it to you.’” Here, Joel refers to illusory forms of love which are lies of the heart, mind and soul. He was largely inspired by playwright Samuel Shepard Rogers’ off-Broadway “A Lie Of The Mind” (1985), dealing with the aftermath of a severe incident of spousal abuse. Interestingly, the musician-vocalist (who always disliked his own voice❕) claimed that he was trying to sound like Robert Palmer (“Addicted To Love”, 1985) : “He hardly opens his lips when he sings. I like his singing style. He doesn’t really pronounce his words, but he kinda grunts ‘em.” While Mr. Joel is known as the “Piano Man,” this is the one number he would play guitar on in concert, exceptionally stepping out from behind his usual keyboard instrument. Unsurprisingly, “A Matter Of Trust” ended up being the hugest hit from “The Bridge” (1986), the last album William Martin Joel made with his longtime (1977-1986) producer Philip Ramone (1934 - 2013). ONE GREAT HARD ROCK STANDARD‼️ 💙🎹💜
Has to be the best Billy Joel song ever
Facts
For me it's Anthon'y Song. This one's a close second though.
Obviously Captain Jack and Piano Man are better man....I mean wtf...
Yes you have a point
Honesty has always been my deep favorite but this one is really good too, it's too hard to pick sometimes
Listening In 2024.
"the closer you get to the fire the more you'll get burned" hits so hard
But remember you will walk away a fool or a king
This song truly rocks.
My favourite Billy Joel song. He can rock out too. He always writes good lyrics and has a good ear for melody.
Check out his classical stuff. Talk about a good ear for melody!
of course,i think like you Billy Joel great artist..
Mine too!
Second that... favorite by far.
Agreed. This song is nothing but hooks
Has to be without a doubt, the best Billy Joel song ever

It's right up there with "We Didn't Start the Fire" and "River of Dreams". For sure.

The line "can't go the distance with too much resistance" never before hit me so hard!!
Favourite song by Billy. ❤️
That line always makes me think of someone I love.
@@willmpet It made me reflect on working hard for what I want in my life. 😊
The line "and I walk away a fool or a king" hits me hard in this song... the difference Trust makes in the outcome of events.
That Is my favourite line, too and it breaks my heart everytime ❤
Yes......repost it all the time. Best song of the time.

amazing production, catchy with meaningful lyrics, maybe his most underrated song
Billy Joel never gets old to my ears!
H sock same with me
Still listening in 2023! They don’t make ‘em like this any more 😙
My personal favorite song of his was very disappointed when it wasn't included on his Greatest Hits cause it's a banger 🤘🤘☝️
That's because this song came out in 1986, after he released his Greatest Hits.
Billy Joel seemed wise when I was 20 and he seems wise now I'm nearly 50. Not sure what that says about each of us lol. Anyway I still love his music.
Alot of the best older songs seem to have some sort of magical power spell to them...scary!
This song always rips my heart out.
2024 and STILL A BANGER!💯
I was 16 When "A Matter of Trust" Came Out... I'm 53 Now and STILL Enjoy Listening to It. It Means MORE to Me Now than It Ever Has...
I was 6 when this came out, still listening to this at 43.
This is the perfect love song, not clingy or dramatic it's honest, vulnerable and proud at the same time.
There‘s something about this song.. I can‘t put my finger on it. But it touches me.
Simply the rock and roll masterpiece !! I have discovered this song and can not get enough - hearing it again and again...❤
Oh, yes!! My favorite Billy Joel tune! I love him for all his music, but this is my favorite!!
This was harder rocking then his previous efforts but was also proof that Billy could make a great hit song even when he stepped out from behind the piano.
He's always had rockers in the mould of this song, such as Big Shot, I Go To Extremes, It's Still Rock And Roll To Me, Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway), No Man's Land, Prelude/Angry Young Man, Only The Good Die Young, Pressure, Sometimes A Fantasy, That's Not Her Style and You May Be Right but because he is so versatile and can write any kind of song from Ballads, Blues, Country, Folk, Gospel, Jazz and so on but some of his bigger hits are ballads, then some people might not know the other stuff.
for me this song has most lyrical excellence. most songs do not do as well to hook the listener!
And the sheer amount of words he packed into 4 minutes! Not like some songs with the same few words repeated over and over. It has a real message.
Depeche mode
Can sing with gravel can sing high can sing in rhymes.....genius
Billy Joel is one of those amazing guys that went from boxer to pop legend. God bless America (and the world). Some amazing stories
One of his best songs!🎉
one of my favorite songs from billy
Me too!
One of My Favorite too! 2020
Billy Joel was like "Screw it, I'm gonna write an awesome rock and roll song with no chorus and, F you, it's gonna have 2 bridges!"
😂😅😂
The song is nothing but choruses and bridges: legendary songwriting.
One of the best intros regardless of genre. That had/has to be a kickass concert opener.
My favorite song of his. So good.
This song and music track from Billy Joel is so excellent and so beautiful-But unfortunately the year 1986 was one of the worst years of my life, when this music from Billy Joel came out!😝🤔🤨
Joel's best song in my opinion
I adore this song. It was introduced to me by a dear friend of mine who died last October 21th,so it now reminds me of him. Love the song. Miss my friend
This is me Luis Opelanio who's going to post something.
Whenever I hear this song, I think of Karen Kasumi.
For those who don't know her, search "Karen Kasumi Gwenom". It's one of my favorite searches in Google.
im very sorry for your loss

The best songs are the songs about love. They have the most meaning.
love the guitar in this
Me too
Exactly, actually i made near identical comment from pc on other vid with this song.
Whoes the other guys playing guitar? I wanna look them up
That’s David Brown on lead guitar 🎸 He was Billy’s guitarist from 1979-1989. There’s clips of him playing this live on Letterman. He also reunited with Billy briefly in 2022 at MSG when they did “This is the Time”.
That guitar lick that starts at 2:25 cuts right through me and just kills me.
This is my all-time favorite Billy Joel song. Just so much hope and truth about the struggles of love and faith.
I've listened to this one 4 time in a row; each time increasing the volume.
...I had almost full Volume the 1st time: A great “getting ready for work song”...
One of the best Songs from all the Times
Yeah!
One of his best.
Been listening to him sense I was a kid
I was 8 when this song was released. I taped if off of the radio and listened to it over and over and over...lol. Who else wishes we were back in the good ol' days??

love the power in this song.

His vocals and he turns a phrase with the best of the them.
This is one Billy Joel song that will pump you up! The other is 'I Go To Extremes.'

Right, referring to his bike-accident.
Most simple, beautiful lyrics. Truly a working man's musician.
I love this song !

#10, 1986.
Hi Sponge Bob
Should’ve been a #1 IMO. But in 1986 the competition was pretty stiff.
Happy birthday Billy. 🎉
A springsteenian Billy Joel, not bad at all !

Billy Joel forever.
Talk about pounding out a tune. It gets right inside of you. A four minute ride to the middle of your gut.
This guy was a relationship genius in his song writing
I 100% agree with you
There is still (in the 21st century) so much to say about “A Matter Of Trust” (1986), in which Billy Joel lyrically emphasizes that TRUE LOVE MUST BE BASED ON TRUST, KEY TO A RELATIONSHIP.
The composer meant this piece to be empathetic towards women. He stated : “It’s similar in the intention as ‘An Innocent Man’ [1984], where the lyrics say, ‘I know you’ve been betrayed, I know you’ve had lovers who’ve let you down. Here, Joel refers to illusory forms of love which are lies of the heart, mind and soul.
He doesn’t really pronounce his words, but he kinda grunts ‘em.”
While Mr.
