      American Baked Beans are different from British baked beans. For one Americans are accustomed to having baked beans as part 9f the side dishes provided @ BBQs , what's served when we go out to have bbq at a restaurant, like the baked beans you had in Austin, Tx when you went to that bbq restaurant and the taste of the mass produced beans that are sweetest with molasses that can be bought at the supermarket. One popular brand of baked beans is Bushe's baked beans and those of us who grew up in the 1990s remember having Can De Kamp' s pork and beans with hot dogs cut up in them this turning them into pork and beans and wennies which made for a quick and easy 10 minute to cook dinner for moms.
      Baked beans in America can also be sweetened with a cousin of molasses called sorghum which is used typically in the south. Canadian drivers drive on the right side of the road, I do think to here are a few islands in the Caribbean that drive on the left that are members of the commonwealth. . The stereotype of the UK having bad food is a holdover from American GIs (soldiers) after returning from WWII and saying British food was not appetitizing which was a consequence of rationing. Most Americans will admit to having a passing interest in the Royals, we love Diana and by extension William and Harry etc I for one watched both royal weddings over and over again, but my love for all things concerning European royalty and specifically for the RF is just a passing interest. I think feelings are mixed to some extent over here about the treatment the Duchess of Sussex received both from the RF and the media. There are a camp of tanks that like some Brits believe that the ascension to the throne should pass over the Prince of Wales to Prince William which I know won't happen.
      So much so , when friends and family want to know anything about the Royals, they call me. My great aunt brought my mom w book of the Crown Jewels when she went to London in 1953, around the same time as the coronation when my mom was a little girl, but unfortunately the book burned when my grandmother's apartment burned down. My mom watched Charles and Diana's wedding while pregnant with me. I was in high school, shaving just started my sophomore year (10th grade) and remember with vivid detail what both my mom and I were doing the fateful night of crash in Paris. We actually we're driven over the tunnel when we were on vacation in Paris in 2008 .

      @Sean Beckerer Actually Nosh is used to refer to food 8n the US , sometimes it's used ironically by hipsters and it's used by Jewish people sometimes since it's a Yiddish word brought over by Jewish immigrants from central and Eastern Europe in late 19th and early 20th centuries.

    • @billmcsteen274
      @billmcsteen274 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Sean Beckerer This list is hilarious, especially #7. Similarly, I think that it's quirky that Brits say "move house" (they do, don't they?)

    • @danielleporter1829
      @danielleporter1829 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Sean Beckerer Saying Nosh isn;t an American word just because it's a word that came with immigrants on the contrary makes it just that. We have hundreds of thousands of worlds that we say on daily basis, whether we know are words from different languages or not consciously or not. School for instance comes from the German word schule , ,Guru comes from Hindi , Entrepeneur is from French, the phrase Chop Chop is Chinese, Status quo and Per Capita , Klutz is another word we use in English that's a Yiddish word, are from Latin and so forth and so on. So while on the surface, these and other words aren't "American words" but they have made an impact and on the American and in general English language lexicon

    I'm an American who spent 2 weeks in England last year, in London, Manchester and Liverpool. I was warned ahead of time by a British friend who lives in London to not talk to Londoners as they don't want to be bothered. But I said I came 5000 miles to meet some real English people so I actually did go up to strangers in train stations, Tube stations, in shops and pubs, everywhere, and I almost always asked them for directions how to get somewhere. Out of all of the busy, aloof Londoners I spoke to, every single one was polite and nice and some even friendly. No Londoner was rude to me. In Manchester the people were very friendly and more open than Londoners. Easy to talk to. However, in Liverpool I did have the unfortunate experience of being panhandled by a very, very drunk man in front of Lime Street train station and when I didn't give him the amount he wanted he started yelling at the top of his lungs that he was going to kill me! I quickly walked away as he was so drunk he couldn't do anything. Liverpool seemed a very violent city with a lot of drunks everywhere. That was my one and only bad experience in England. I also met many, many foreign immigrants in England and they were all friendly. I love the UK and it's food.

The conductress barred my friend from getting on, as there was no more room for passengers. When someone has asked me why I thought the UK still has a monarch, here’s what I said: “First, keep in mind, it’s not just the UK in the West. Norway, Sweden, and Denmark are just a few of the other constitutional monarchies. And I imagine it comes down to national identity and pride. Those countries have a long history and they love their tradition. Having a monarch is part of their national identity. For instance, “Hate” and “Dislike” may have different meanings and connotations but they can still be used interchangeably. It’s perfectly fine to say that you hate something, (like a movie, a song, a celebrity, a person who pissed you off, an everyday inconvenience, etc.) when you really mean you dislike it.
      There’s usually no need to correct someone if you know what they mean, especially over something as trivial as that. Brits do this cuz they wanna make themselves look sophisticated and well-read but they really only come across as annoying and petty.

    I agree that I don't HATE driving on the left (HATE is too strong a word), but when I'm over there and I come upon a roundabout (we call them traffic circles) it takes me a full minute to figure out how to enter. I'm always looking in the wrong direction. It does frustrate the cars behind me; they are probably saying to themselves "We must have a f4!6ing American in front of us". After I finally get on, I do at least 4 complete circles before I figure out how to get to my exit. That isn't an issue for Brits driving here because we do not have a tenth of the roundabouts you have in a country that is significantly larger than yours. You don't have as many opportunities here to feel that disorientation.

      @@ronphillips3339 Do come visit California! Just be aware that our weather does vary significantly depending on what part of the state you're in. A general rule is that the further you are from the coast, the hotter and drier it is, and there can be a big difference on either side of the hills.
      San Francisco is known for being chilly and windy, and for its frequent heavy fog. Santa Cruz is much more of a destination for beach-type stuff but the ocean is *very* cold compared to further south (and even colder compared to the east coast).
      Coastal Southern California is the weather everyone seems to like, but it is quite dry (you can tell by the plant life that grows there) and the sun is VERY intense compared to anywhere in Europe. Be sure to wear sunscreen regardless of the weather.
      The Mojave Desert is very close to Los Angeles and though it is a desert and therefore dry, it's not as intensely hot as the bigger Sonoran Desert, and it's a very beautiful place, full of interesting plants and animals. Just be sure to bring water and don't get lost--although it's fairly flat so if you have an off-road vehicle you can just point yourself in a direction until you hit a highway.
      Inland California--especially the central valley--can be absolutely oppressively dry and hot. Sacramento in particular breaks 40 Celsius regularly in the summer, despite being much further north than LA.
      But then even further inland as you go up into the Sierra Nevada mountains, you'll likely encounter snow during a big portion of the year--there are tons of ski resorts and the like near Yosemite and Lake Tahoe. Be sure to visit Reno if you're in the area! It's just on the other side of the border in Nevada, but it's a very underrated little town and if you like gambling you can partake there for much lower cost than in Las Vegas.

    I think that the big holdup on a National Healthcare System in the US is the sheer magnitude of the country and the politics that always get dragged into every little detail. Then you have such a drastic difference in the quality and availability of heath care and other public services from state-to-state.
    For example, Montana has excellent healthcare, no sales tax (it means that when you go up to the register to pay, you pay what the price tag says) and the best welfare benefits of any state I have lived in. (Also casinos and gambling, which ARE taxed)
    On the other hand, North Carolina has very expensive healthcare that may or may not be of good quality, the taxes are insane, the school system is one of the worst in the nation, and the welfare benefits are abysmal. Oh, but at least they are casino free SMH
    Disclaimer: I love every state I have lived in. Geographically speaking, NC has been my favorite. Friendly people, lots of culture, nice climate and GORGEOUS scenery

But it's crazy that you just let us get right off a sleepless overnight flight and then straight into a wrong-side drive stick-shift car and let us go on our merry ass way out into morning rush hour traffic. Tiny little stone walled country roads (often passing huge farm equipment), houses built literally against the street in the apex of curves, rivers that you actually drive through, and having to signal while changing gears through all the multi-exit multi-lane roundabouts... I had been told that London would be very stand-off (busy and all that), but all through Oxford, Cambridge, and Kent, I found the British polite and delightful. I am fairly introverted so I am not looking for typical American friendliness. And every friend who has been to the UK loved it, too. PS - I loved the TV and I watch Corrie every single day and love it because the characters look and act like real people in the sense of looking like normal humans (not supermodels!) and have regular jobs. Love your food. Haven't driven in the UK but you all drive your way, we drive ours. (sorry, we tend to think we are the Center of the Universe. Because there is no universal system of electricity delivery to homes and hotels, it's hard to buy a replacement small appliance. • @paulrichards4452
      @paulrichards4452 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mel Bauer The UK version was so bad apparently that the US copied it. Just like you take ideas from our other shows. Steptoe & Son became Sanford & Son, Blake's 7 became Firefly, Our Cybermen became Borg. The Matrix taken from Doctor Who The Deadly Assassin, The Office was also remade over there and don't mention the terrible remake of Red Dwarf. Ho and even the Addams Family owes its dept to the UK.

    • @paulrichards4452
      @paulrichards4452 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mel Bauer The British Shameless is more gritty and humorous. To compare the two is silly because you wouldn't get all the British references or our different humour. We wouldn't make a version like the American version of our show because it wouldn't be relatable. The American version was good but suited to the American audience. Besides who invented TV? A certain Scottish inventor! America is better at visuals concerning television because your industry is cinematic whereas ours is television ( John Logie Baird )and theatrical based which of course goes back to Shakespeare. I do like some American TV shows especially the ones from the 1960's such as The Twilight Zone which was inspired by the British film Dead of Night 1945. I like looking at the differences and comparing and as they say variety is the spice of life. Maybe you should check out our shows like The Avengers and The Prisoner from the 1960's as I regard these to be unbeatable. No remake could ever do them justice. Same as our Sherlock Holmes the Jeremy Brett version. If you look at the American version of the sitcom Sanford and Son and compare it to the original British version Steptoe and Son its fascinating to see the huge differences. The British version is very bleak and Gothic whereas the American version is more upbeat. The old man in the American version isn't repulsive enough for the audience to really sympathise with the son. Maybe our sense of humour is just more cruel and gritty and full of pathos. This can certainly be said for Shameless which does owe some of its comedy elements to Steptoe and Son. There are certain comedies or dramas that are unique to Britain as I'm sure there are to the states.

      I am just above the poverty line, but could afford my health insurance. Until the year Obamacare kicked in. My premiums jumped 40%. Deductible skyrocketed to $7000. I lost my private insurance, had to go on assistance for the first time in my life. Brilliant, instead of helping people get off assistance, let’s raise the rates so MORE people need to take money from the government to pay for it. And again,...I DID lose my plan, had to take what they would give me. But still couldn’t afford to actually see a doctor (like my oncologist, for my annual check in), because of the deductible. But, yeah, that’s all nonsense. 🙄🤦‍♀️. And yet, even without socialised medicine, if I were brought in from a car crash, I wouldn’t be denied treatment. Because THAT’S the biggest myth other countries seem to have: that if we can’t afford it, we won’t be treated. All Obamacare did for me and hundreds of others I know was make preventative care unaffordable.

    • @scratchpenny
      @scratchpenny 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@heatherqualy9143 This is a great point. I tend to be in favor of healthcare reform in America and I would be willing to consider a national health system, but Obamacare is a massive failure. It is a corporatist approach to nationalized healthcare and it is pretty awful. The only thing good that came out of it were some of the patient protections (e.g. can't deny coverage, etc.). The reason why it was so easily approved by those crooks in Congress was because all the health insurance companies loved the plan. The insurance companies were backing them to pass it, as it's a boon for their industry. I think the strategy by Obama and Democrats was indeed to get more people reliant on government assistance - since that's the Democrat way of staying in power. They also probably viewed it as a first step towards nationalized healthcare. The problem is that the insurance companies will never allow a truly nationalized system, so we end up with this corporatist horseshit. It would be much better if we just went back to before the ACA with a few human rights protections instead.
