Thanks ! Yes they do, and all the chunks that have the redstone wire in them have to be loaded as well. A solution to travelling longer distances can be to have multiple stations linked with eachother in order to cover the distance while being loaded :)
Yes there is :D All you have to do is build a third station and link it up to the other stations. Now instead of one button at each station you'll have two buttons, each leading to one of the other two, and you have a couple more redstone wires to lay down as well x)
