Just a personal observation, adjust your seat forward a little bit.

Great video review, Seth! It’s really nice how you edited the video clips to match your commentary.
Since you have spent some time in the L Scorch, which is one of the L Code’s closest competitors, I would love to hear your thoughts on how they compare.

Thanks Brooks! I'm gonna try to get my hands on an OG and shoot a comparison of the Code/Scorch/OG shortly here. Scorch and Code felt like night and day to me, so I've got a lot of thoughts on that matter!

@@HeadwatersKayak good move to add the OG to the Scorch/Code comparison. I haven't paddled a Code, but I thought the L Scorch was similar to the OG with several noticeable improvements.

@@bfosterkayaking I’ve got an OG and large code. I’d be Interested to hear what improvements the scorch has over the OG.

the Scorch L has a floaty, loose feeling on the surface of the water, much like the OG. They are similar boats that will appeal to similar styles and sizes of paddler, but I think the Scorch L does what the OG does a little bit better.
The Scorch L is longer (by about 4.5") and narrower (by about 1.5") than the OG. It felt faster than the OG when I paddled it. I believe it has even more rocker on both ends. The Scorch L is about 20 Liters smaller than the OG (340 vs 360). The Scorch feels less bulky and more sleek and maneuverable to me. It also feels more forgiving in the secondary stability and easier to roll, and I like the outfitting better.
Pyranha's recommended weight range for the Scorch L is 175-255 pounds, whereas Waka recommends the OG for 145-245 pounds. Waka got it right for both boats and Pyranha got the minimum weight wrong for the Scorch L. I weigh 175 and feel the Scorch L is proportioned much better for my weight than the Scorch M. Levi Rhodes weighs only 145 pounds and he loved the Scorch L (th-cam.com/video/H8kwCgARzws/w-d-xo.html).
The Scorch L does have a really big knee area with the stock outfitting so a medium sized paddler will benefit from a lot of padding in it, but I customize the outfitting in all of my boats so that isn't an issue for me. The stock OG outfitting might be a little better fitting out of the box for more people. The OG is also about 5 pounds lighter than the Scorch L.
I haven't paddled a Code, but the large looks like a true large-person's boat, much like the large Mamba. Dagger sizing tends to run bigger than Pyranha's, and the large Code looks both bigger and more forgiving than the Scorch L.

    Hey good evening,
Wondering where your seat placement is? I just got my code out on the river and gave my seat forward of center. 5’11” 220lbs

Nice Video Seth, I'm about the same height and weight as you and had a large Code for about 3 months and it just wasn't what I was looking for. Granted I was coming from a 2nd gen medium Burn, and I'm basically a class three paddler who was looking for something to give me a little more confidence when I'm stepping it up to something like the west fork of the hood. Yes, the Code is really good at smashing through holes, but I found I was much more likely to be hitting holes in the Code as it just didn't seem to track as well, or got pushed around a little, felt like I was paddling a barge. Also, while it takes some work you can get the large code vertical, I hit a pretty beefy hole on the Hood at a little over 7 foot and stern squirted and flipped it, the annoying thing was I'm pretty sure I would have avoided that hole in my Antix. If I was going to try the code again, I would go with the medium, the large is just huge.

Definitely agreed - the large is SO much boat. Medium Code, Large Scorch, or OG all seem to fit really well at my weight/height range.

I'm about the same size; 6'2 185. I'm on the fence about M or L and I don't think I'll get a chance to demo an M. I used to prefer the larger Mamba over the medium mamba. I wonder if my preference will be the same for the Code. My most important criteria is safety and maneuverability

The L is a big boat. You are on the fence and could go ether way, but the L Code is bigger than the L Mamba for sure.

What did you end up with? I am the same size as you with a L Mamba, but was thinking the M Code would be more appropriate as it is the same volume at 89 gal.

With the edges being softer does it effect the secondary stability compared to how other creekers have great secondary?

    • @HeadwatersKayak
      @HeadwatersKayak  ปีที่แล้ว

Secondary still felt really strong to me. It’s a really “well rounded” boat!

  • @oscoastierob

You’re too small for this boat, even “paddling up a size”. But otherwise a good review. And as someone else in the comments said moving the seat around does change the way the boat handles and fairly considerably.
