Thanks Art. Nice to see these two next to each other. It gives a better idea of what the workspace is going to be. 4k is not doable for me as I will be using MacOS in native resolution. After watching this video the decision is now between the PD3420Q 2k ultrawide and the SW270c 2k with AdobeRGB. Both have display P3 and M-Book mode, which is a strong selling point for both. My next monitor will definitely be one of these two BENQs. Thanks again.
Thank you so much, this was very informative. Would you recommend one or the other for 3D cad work? I really like the idea of a widescreen to layout my different toolbars on the side but I’ve heard that the true 4k resolution makes for a clearer experience in these types of drawings. I’ve also been considering the Mobius line to have the 144hz resolution for a smoother 3D view experience. At some point just to many good options!
You're welcome. It all depends on your 3d work need, I know this may seem like a round about way of answer your question but I can tell you that PD3420Q will work just fine. It won't be 4k but at the distance that you have to sit back from the display, you won't see much of the pixel unless you are right next to it. As for as the EX mobius line I do like that too, I am testing one now. It will work for 3d but if you want the better color and factory calibration of the 2 I would choose the PD.
Appreciate the review, I am a amateur photographer and creative, printing does matter for me on occasion but at the same time I've been doing things successfully on late 2013 imac display for quite a few years, which I believe suffers more in all color spaces than this panel, including resolution. I certainly understand that there are niches at the high-end professional level, but I can help but feel off-put by the constant "you need this monitor for this task or this one for that task" jargon in many tech reviews. Again, this is no critique of your video or review, which along with others has pointed me to the PD series. Having 3 monitors for gaming, print, and digital is absurd and unnecessary, and this seems like the best compromise all around, budget included. Thank you!
Great reviews. I love the deep dive into the two displays. I was looking at both of these. If you could only choose one, which would you choose and why? I’m leaning towards the PD3420Q, due to the aspect ratio, considering that both monitors are color accurate. It’s also a bit cheaper.
Personally I would go for the 4K because of my workflow and what I do. But PD3420Q does present a really great compelling value compared to the PD3220U :)

What percentage do you use each program and your primary creative discipline? 1. For some yes only sRGB but if you want to edit your images in the largest color space possible then having a photo specific color space such as Adobe RGB coverage would be important and at that point I would look to the BenQ SW line. 2. Do you need 4K, the reason why any one get 4K are the following: 1. misconception and understanding for peers or colleagues with misguided suggestions, 2. You work primary with video and want to view your video play back during editing at 100% without scaling, 3. You want more screen real estate because 4K is more pixel, but there are compromises with small text as I mentioned. Your feed back to these questions will give you a better indicator of what works best for you. As much as I would love to tell you want to get, this is a choice that only you can make :) 3. 2K for Software calibration PD3420Q, PD2700Q, PD3200Q Hardware calibration, SW2700PT, SW270C. 4. 4K for software calibration PD2700U, PD2720U, PD3200U, PD3220U Hardware Calibration, SW271, SW321C

I don't it professionally though. Just a hobby of mine. So is adobe RGB important for me? The only thing I understand about Adobe RGB is it is important if I wanna print the photos and want the colors to match. For video editing, I have a TH-cam channel where I mostly post my gaming content and timelapses there. I play and record my gaming content at 1080p as I got the Zowie XL2546K and but will upscale the video to 1440p as I upload to TH-cam. I had a 2K Asus PG27VQ previously, I game and edit photos and videos on that monitor. Unfortunately, it broke down. So, I decided to separate my gaming and productivity monitor as I want to upgrade to 240Hz for gaming. So now for the productivity monitor, I am wondering whether I should just upgrade to 4K monitor instead of staying in 2K. Im planning to watch videos/movie and occasionally play some triple A title games using this monitor too. I currently have a i7-9700K and RTX 2080Ti. Hope this gives you more context on my situation. Update: The more I watch your videos, the more i think I don't need 4K. lol Seems like for 2K, SW270C is the best right now.

I know they're very different, one 27" and 5K, the other 32" and 4K, I'm held back by rumors that monitors that have a PPI around 110 or 220 run poorly on macOS, what can you tell me? Thanks!

Also don't listen to the 110 or 220 PPI conversation on internet. I have been running scaling for years now and it has not been an issue. And no it does not run poorly on MacOS. I'll probably have to make a video about this and I know the specific video that you and other have watched that propagated this misinformation.

Let me summarize it for you, 4K runs just fine on Mac. I am running dual 4K right now on my Mac Studio and it does just fine. If you are ok with scaling PPI is not an issue.

I scale both 4k displays the same. Before when I was running Intel Mac I would dynamically change this based on what I am doing. With these M series machine GPU are so powerful now that scaling on 2 or more 4K displays at the top resolution is not an issue at all, no lag or delay.

When you say gamer, are you more gamer or designer? Do you need refresh rate above 60 hz? If so look at BenQ entertainment displays such as their Mobius line, EX or EW. If you are more designer and ok with 60 Hz then choose the PD for better color accuracy.
Hi, a question or issue related to PD3220U which I bought a while ago (and I love it!). You can configure it to deliver power at all times on Thunderbolt and USB ports. This works fine on Thunderbolt, but not USB. I have a BenQ ScreenBar lamp connected and this is the case: - When connected to Thunderbolt (Via USB adapter) the lamp works at all times, with or without computer connected - When connected to USB the lamp works only when computer is connected to the monitor. Is this normal behavior? Thank you for a good channel on all BenQ displays!
Art, specific question on the ultrawide 34 which I cant find in any of the Specs. What is the horizontal distance that the screen front is to the back, if it was right up against the wall on the desk? My current Dell 4K sits with the front of the screen only 14.5CM from the wall using the bundled stand. Looking at diagrams the BenQ looks to be more like 22CM. Thank you

Based on what you told me, I would look at PD line, unless you need high refresh rate then I would look at BenQ EX or Mobius line. For PD it would depend on the size and resolution that you need.
Great informative review! Can't decide between the two! I have a question about 3220U, do you know if it's possible to use the "Daisy chain" port to connect an external thunderbolt SSD hard drive ???
It will work it would be USB C and not TB for USB connection. The bandwidth is there. The other thing is that, you might want to use the USB C port on the side rather than the daisy chain port, I have not tested it. But if I have time, I'll give it a go.

Hi Art, I will be doing Photography and Videography-4K. I have just bought the Rtx 3080ti 12gb video card. Would the 24mb in the rtx 3090 have been more sufficient with multiple displays due to the extra v ram? Should the pd line be what I’m looking at or the sw line? Also I want two displays and my question would be will you run out of video memory the more displays you use as you work in the timeline with or without other things running, just because you added more video displays, like in a two to three display setup?
Does the amount of monitors have a direct effect on video memory? In other words will running 2-3 monitors at 4K, dictate that I must have a video card at 12-24mb memory? I’m doing photography and videography at 4K and I want 2-3 monitors. I just bought a rtx 3080ti with 12gb ram, should I have gotten a 3090 at 24gb? I want Benq with Rgb, rec709 at 100 percent if possible, which line up sw, pd or??
Not necessary, more is usually better but these memory are not used directly in the way that you would think. If you can afford the 24GB get that. Either PD or SW will work just fine for what you are looking for.
Have you measured the contrast using the colorimeter for the case of the PD3420Q? I ask it because I already have the PD3220U at home and in the calibrated modes with uniformity activated (sRGB & Display-P3) the contrast is lower than in the modes without uniformity. To be more exact, in the modes with uniformity the contrast measured with ColorChecker Display Plus and ccProfiler v1.1.2 is 667:1. In the modes without uniformity activated I got 1299:1. So I was thinking of getting the PD3420Q too. But since all color modes on this monitor have the uniformity mechanism turned on, I am concerned that the measured contrast will be below the 1000:1 that BenQ specifies. That's why I was asking if you have measured the contrast of the PD3420Q with the colorimeter. Thank you.
@@ArtIsRight But BenQ specifies 1000:1. If uniformity cannot be turned off, I understand that the value of 1000:1: will be with uniformity on, right? I have not found any review on Internet in which this model is analized and measured the contrast ratio using a colorimeter. Thank you for answering so quickly.
I generally don't recommend that anyone look at the number or specs but rather how the display looks and works in real life. The question of contrast would come down to what are you looking to do with it and what is the rational behind it. With software calibration contrast ratio does drop but you can always choose an option other than native and try to bring back contrast with the icc, I have not tested specific calibration method on this display but in my testing I have found the contrast not to be an issue.

I currently have a 4k monitor with my mac and I have to change the scale to 2560x1440 to have a better reading (I have a bad vision so i need to scale so I can see something). But I want to go on a 34 inch display to have more space for work... So if I go for the 34 inch will the text be easy readeable and as good quality as in a 32 inch 4k down scaled ?
Easily readable yes, because this 34" is a 2K equivalent. As far as a good quality, that would depend on your preference. It is like a 2K display, so you'll see the pixel more, but because the display is wide, you'll probably sit back further from it. I would say it is somewhere in between. Based on what I see, I like it.

Have you experienced image sticking? Many users complain that if a static image is displayed on the monitor for 20 minutes or more, then it remains visible on other images for some time.
If I want to get both of these and put the PD3220U above the PD3420Q. Can i run the daisy chain thunderbolt 3 cable out of the PD3220U and into the thunderbolt 3 of the PD3420Q?

1. If you do video, they are about the same, they are both 95% P3 color space coverage. As far as worth it watch this th-cam.com/video/KrF6PHTOsW0/w-d-xo.html if you want the matted screen, like deep matte, go with the SW321C. 2. DP is better than HDMI because it does not covert the color to yUV like HDMI which is more of an entertainment standard. As far as USB C it is the same as DP, because USB C uses display port over lay for the signal. So even though you are using USB C it is still DP type signal, just a different connector.
It is calibrated from the factory and embedded in the firmware, there's no way to by pass this. But even if you can, brightness or contrast won't increase by much. Especially brightness you are running into the panel backlight limitation then.
Thanks for the great video. I picked up the 3420Q the other day and have an issue with the kvm. I have a MacBook Pro M1 hooked up via usb-c port. And a work Thinkpad hooked up via a usb-c to Display port cable to the display port. Both video signals work when I switch from usb-c to display port and vice versa, however the keyboard and mouse (connected to the monitor) only work on the Mac side. Can't seem to get the keyboard and mouse to work on the Thinkpad. Thanks for any advice!
That is because you need a USB uplink cable between the think pad and the displays as well. Without it, it won't work. Display Port Connection does not transmit USB signal.
I have a question on BenQ monitors in general. When I did my most recent calibration, I noticed the "Darkroom" setting as an option for my controller keys. (I'm not sure how I missed this before.) I'd like to know what use that setting is recommended for. I'm just curious since I was oblivious to it before and would like to see if I can utilize it in the future.
Darkroom modes does a few things, it lighten up the dark tones on the display a bit so that you can see the shadow details better, it also make some brightness and contrast adjustments to the display in this mode as well. Personally for photo work I would just stick with the standard color mode Adobe RGB, sRGB etc. Darkroom mode has too much influence on the look of the image that is done at the panel level and the end result can differ from what you are seeing.

I'm not sure, I would contact your local BenQ office to get a better idea on time frame. I know you like to get one and they want to get them into your hands as quick as possible but there are lots of global supply chain constraints from the Pandemic as well.
Not quite, calibrating curved display is difficult, not to say that it can't be done. But if you think about it, all of the colors from the pixel shoot out straight on a flat display, now this is normal but on a curved display the converge and this causes bias in color calibration software because these device measure the light output not the emittance source where the LCD is.

You can use the PD2725U as primary and daisy chain the PD3420Q from the PD2725U, that is perfectly fine.

For what you do PD, if you are pro photo or pro color grading then SW. If you want SW that is perfectly ok as well. :)
Hi, a question or issue related to PD3220U which I bought a while ago (and I love it!). You can configure it to deliver power at all times on Thunderbolt and USB ports. This works fine on Thunderbolt, but not USB. I have a BenQ ScreenBar lamp connected and this is the case:
- When connected to Thunderbolt (Via USB adapter) the lamp works at all times, with or without computer connected
- When connected to USB the lamp works only when computer is connected to the monitor.
Is this normal behavior?

Art, specific question on the ultrawide 34 which I cant find in any of the Specs. What is the horizontal distance that the screen front is to the back, if it was right up against the wall on the desk? My current Dell 4K sits with the front of the screen only 14.5CM from the wall using the bundled stand. Looking at diagrams the BenQ looks to be more like 22CM. Thank you

Based on what you told me, I would look at PD line, unless you need high refresh rate then I would look at BenQ EX or Mobius line. For PD it would depend on the size and resolution that you need.
Great informative review! Can't decide between the two! I have a question about 3220U, do you know if it's possible to use the "Daisy chain" port to connect an external thunderbolt SSD hard drive ???
It will work it would be USB C and not TB for USB connection. The bandwidth is there. The other thing is that, you might want to use the USB C port on the side rather than the daisy chain port, I have not tested it. But if I have time, I'll give it a go.

Hi Art, I will be doing Photography and Videography-4K. I have just bought the Rtx 3080ti 12gb video card. Would the 24mb in the rtx 3090 have been more sufficient with multiple displays due to the extra v ram?
Should the pd line be what I’m looking at or the sw line? Also I want two displays and my question would be will you run out of video memory the more displays you use as you work in the timeline with or without other things running, just because you added more video displays, like in a two to three display setup?
You'll be fine with memory. SW or PD will do just fine, you need to figure out if you need hardware calibration or not.
Does the amount of monitors have a direct effect on video memory? In other words will running 2-3 monitors at 4K, dictate that I must have a video card at 12-24mb memory? I’m doing photography and videography at 4K and I want 2-3 monitors. I just bought a rtx 3080ti with 12gb ram, should I have gotten a 3090 at 24gb? I want Benq with Rgb, rec709 at 100 percent if possible, which line up sw, pd or??
Not necessary, more is usually better but these memory are not used directly in the way that you would think. If you can afford the 24GB get that. Either PD or SW will work just fine for what you are looking for.
Have you measured the contrast using the colorimeter for the case of the PD3420Q? I ask it because I already have the PD3220U at home and in the calibrated modes with uniformity activated (sRGB & Display-P3) the contrast is lower than in the modes without uniformity. To be more exact, in the modes with uniformity the contrast measured with ColorChecker Display Plus and ccProfiler v1.1.2 is 667:1. In the modes without uniformity activated I got 1299:1. So I was thinking of getting the PD3420Q too. But since all color modes on this monitor have the uniformity mechanism turned on, I am concerned that the measured contrast will be below the 1000:1 that BenQ specifies. That's why I was asking if you have measured the contrast of the PD3420Q with the colorimeter. Thank you.
With uniformity, there's always reduced contrast, that is a side effect and balancing act.

I have not found any review on Internet in which this model is analized and measured the contrast ratio using a colorimeter. Thank you for answering so quickly.
I generally don't recommend that anyone look at the number or specs but rather how the display looks and works in real life. The question of contrast would come down to what are you looking to do with it and what is the rational behind it. With software calibration contrast ratio does drop but you can always choose an option other than native and try to bring back contrast with the icc, I have not tested specific calibration method on this display but in my testing I have found the contrast not to be an issue.
What is the comparison of the PD3220U with PD3205U, which is the better buy please?
PD3220U flagship model with High P3 gamut coverage. PD3205U entry PD with 100% sRGB only. So it all comes down to the gamut that you need.

I currently have a 4k monitor with my mac and I have to change the scale to 2560x1440 to have a better reading (I have a bad vision so i need to scale so I can see something). But I want to go on a 34 inch display to have more space for work... So if I go for the 34 inch will the text be easy readeable and as good quality as in a 32 inch 4k down scaled ?
Easily readable yes, because this 34" is a 2K equivalent. As far as a good quality, that would depend on your preference. It is like a 2K display, so you'll see the pixel more, but because the display is wide, you'll probably sit back further from it. I would say it is somewhere in between. Based on what I see, I like it.

Have you experienced image sticking? Many users complain that if a static image is displayed on the monitor for 20 minutes or more, then it remains visible on other images for some time.
Not on any of these pro displays. What you are referring to image retentions and I have not seen it happen.
If I want to get both of these and put the PD3220U above the PD3420Q. Can i run the daisy chain thunderbolt 3 cable out of the PD3220U and into the thunderbolt 3 of the PD3420Q?

1. If you do video, they are about the same, they are both 95% P3 color space coverage. As far as worth it watch this th-cam.com/video/KrF6PHTOsW0/w-d-xo.html if you want the matted screen, like deep matte, go with the SW321C. 2. DP is better than HDMI because it does not covert the color to yUV like HDMI which is more of an entertainment standard. As far as USB C it is the same as DP, because USB C uses display port over lay for the signal. So even though you are using USB C it is still DP type signal, just a different connector.

Daisy Chain on PD3220U is supported but M1 MBA will only support 1 external display, so no point.

It is calibrated from the factory and embedded in the firmware, there's no way to by pass this. But even if you can, brightness or contrast won't increase by much. Especially brightness you are running into the panel backlight limitation then.

Thanks for the great video. I picked up the 3420Q the other day and have an issue with the kvm. I have a MacBook Pro M1 hooked up via usb-c port. And a work Thinkpad hooked up via a usb-c to Display port cable to the display port. Both video signals work when I switch from usb-c to display port and vice versa, however the keyboard and mouse (connected to the monitor) only work on the Mac side. Can't seem to get the keyboard and mouse to work on the Thinkpad.

That is because you need a USB uplink cable between the think pad and the displays as well. Without it, it won't work. Display Port Connection does not transmit USB signal.

They are both good, it just depends on what you want and the aspect ration that you prefer along with the resolution.

I have a question on BenQ monitors in general. When I did my most recent calibration, I noticed the "Darkroom" setting as an option for my controller keys. (I'm not sure how I missed this before.) I'd like to know what use that setting is recommended for. I'm just curious since I was oblivious to it before and would like to see if I can utilize it in the future.
Darkroom modes does a few things, it lighten up the dark tones on the display a bit so that you can see the shadow details better, it also make some brightness and contrast adjustments to the display in this mode as well. Personally for photo work I would just stick with the standard color mode Adobe RGB, sRGB etc. Darkroom mode has too much influence on the look of the image that is done at the panel level and the end result can differ from what you are seeing.

I'm not sure, I would contact your local BenQ office to get a better idea on time frame. I know you like to get one and they want to get them into your hands as quick as possible but there are lots of global supply chain constraints from the Pandemic as well.

If you are going to do video in 4K, PD3220U might be a better option.
Would a curved UltraWide monitor be good for photo and video editing?
Not quite, calibrating curved display is difficult, not to say that it can't be done. But if you think about it, all of the colors from the pixel shoot out straight on a flat display, now this is normal but on a curved display the converge and this causes bias in color calibration software because these device measure the light output not the emittance source where the LCD is.
