Forward Stride additional comments: When a proper toe snap is executed, you will feel the back top ankle guard on the skate dig into your calf. Equally important is the return! 3 opportunities for power in one stride: 1. When you initially push (back of blade) if your skate is under your belly button in the V-start position; 2. as you extend your leg (middle fo blade); and 3. the toe snap as you perform your follow through. Most important: If you don't return your leg to center, you lose all power as the next push will not start from the back of the blade. Most skaters don't return the skate to the v-position (One opportunity for power lost), and then don't fully extend their leg so that it is locked with the toe flick follow through (another opportunity for power lost). Really, most average skaters capture only 1/3 the power from their push which is the middle of their blade. Good technique, which includes a good return, will give you full 3x power in the same push. And when you do it, it feels as effortless as pressing the pedal on a v-10 engine!

    Dear Coach Jeremy,
Thank you so much for putting your time in to put out hockey videos for everyone to get better at hockey! I know it must take a lot of work but I for one really appreciate it! I wasn't a very good hockey player on my team until I found your channel, and now I am one of the best on my team, thanks to all your videos! I just wanted to say thank you for helping me discover how much fun hockey really is!

That's awesome Reilly, I love doing it. Even though the training videos might not get as many views, I love doing them to help players like yourself.

I watched this video a year ago. Watching it again today was such a nice refresher of the basics.

So well articulated, this was not just skating technique, but a little sprinkle of kinesiology.
Well done, this is very helpful for even really good long time skaters, we instinctively do this stuff, but to really hone in on it will be masterful.

Great video, Jeremy! I love how much time you put into helping us all, people you likely don't know, to skate and play hockey better. I watch your videos not just as tutorials, but also for fun and I always benefit from it. I'm now brilliant and agile in both leisurely skating and hockey. Keep up the good work! :D

Great advice and excellent breakdown. I've shared it with several outlets so that parents and volunteer coaches can use this to help our 8U/6U kids learn good habits early. Many thanks Jeremy and coach Vitale!

Jeremy, I have been playing for 30 years and only recently started to think about my stride after noticing how wide Taylor Hall pushed and how different that was from mine. Thanks for breaking it down for us.

Excellent presentation. Every skating program teaches about pushing to the side (versus back), but this one talking about the knee angle being somewhere between 90 and 180 degrees is key. Too many programs emphasize going as low as you can. Your leg muscles (all muscles for that matter) are not designed to operate that way. They are more like elastic bands than springs. Pushed too far and they won't react properly.

Hey Jeremy, what gloves did Jim Vitale use. I'm looking to get the True hockey stick that you did the review on (Xcore 9 ACF) and I will be needing a new pair of gloves soon and I think a pair of true hockey gloves would look awesome with a true stick.

I have tried the push off sideways. It is not faster because the energy is not directed in right direction. You may feel more power, but its wasted power.
