- On March 2nd 2024 I set off on a single handed adventure on my 23ft Trailer Sailer 'Summer Wine'. I left Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast heading North to the Whitsundays, QLD, Australia. I decided to throw together a few of the videos I took to share the journey. Please keep in mind I am no professional behind the camera. A TH-camr by the name of Simon Carter who has done this trip multiple times was a big inspiration and now having completed the trip myself, I take my hat off to him. Part 1 is from Mooloolaba to Hervey Bay.

Awesome stuff James, Summer Wine was the boat my dad built, and i grew up on in the 80's/90's, we spent 4 months in the Whitsunday's sailing around back in '88, great memories! Enjoy the trip, we will watch with interest!
@@JessAdsErickson She is a lovely boat and is built very well! Nice to hear some of the history behind her. 4 months would have been amazing. By the time I got up to the Whitsundays I was only able to spend a couple of weeks before needing to head off. I hope to treat Summer Wine to more adventures like this.

@@philipgibbons9048 Thanks. I took 15mins “naps” between checks throughout the night however I don’t think any sleep was had!
Reef in main and boat balanced better also easier on the auto pilot
I’d like to know why you left in a northerly?? Especially with a southerly coming

Hi Robert, due to having a limited time window to complete my trip I wanted to maximise my time out on the water. The predicted winds for the day I left were about 7-10knts NE. Whereas reality was 10-15+knts NNE when I headed out. I wanted to get on the inside of Fraser before the Strong Southerlies and storms came through. Instead of sitting at home scratching my head waiting for the marine wind warnings to pass, I decided to go out. I only had a headsail out as strong weather helm is an issue on Summer Wine, along with the headsail being easy to furl if needed as mainsail requires me to go up to the mast which I was not comfortable doing by choice in that sea state especially heading into the night. Im always looking for ways to improve my boat and my sailing so I appreciate your comment and any other tips you may have. I am by no means an experienced sailor so all advice is welcome. Thanks mate

How are you keeping the battery charged up with so much motoring?

@@garymalm Hi Gary, thanks for the support. I ended up having issues with my Raymarine St1000. Turned out the mounting point the previous owners had installed was too far forward. This is in later episodes. My only source of charge for my battery was through a fixed solar panel and when at anchor or motoring I would put the solar blanket out. I neglected to observe how much juice my in built fridge would draw with it running 24/7. I ran out of power multiple times due to this. All part of the learning curve and will improve for next time!
James thanks for the upload. Are you comfortable with 8hp on your 23 footer?
@@ronprince1478 Hi Ron, I found the 8 Hp was enough for my boat throughout the trip. There was only 1 situation North of Yeppoon that due to tide and currents i was only making about 1knt with full throttle and sails up. However I was passing between islands so that didn’t last long. Aside from that the 8hp was fine for what I needed.

Why just a gib? You can NEVER get upwind that way. I would NEVER do it that way. You LIMIT yourself. Being prepared is better. Just saying.
I agree. It also puts the boat out of balance, thus overworking the autopilot.
