      Weatherby factory loads are safe, and loaded stout.
      I reload for both of my Weatherbys and still have trouble matching factory loads velocities.

      The company no longer cares since the Grandson took over the company then fired long term employees to hire Biden invaders illegal immigrants and change the whole makeup of the company.
      I had to pay for a new barrel by Pac Nor to be put on a Mark 5 that had the chamber off center, and I was told it was within Weatherby spec.
      Look for all of the now TH-cam video complaints about Weatherby.

    Feel for you man. To go from that giddy childlike excitement that you earned with hard work, dedication and patience, to that deep, almost make you ill, pit in your stomach. Very disheartening.
    My one interaction with them was poor. Missing action screw after 2nd time I took my new Vanguard shooting. I didn't tork them myself after purchase but had also had very few rounds through it as I was simply working through barrel break in. Contact Weatherby about a replacement as it's a Cerakote screw and a clear QC failure. Their response was "It isn't worth the postage". What a ridiculous response.
    My Vanguard first lite now operates with one blued action screw the original dealer graciously donated. That ultra expensive postage for a 30 cent screw cost Weatherby any future business with me.
    I really hope they do right by you here!

    There's literally no way to see every internal occlusion in every stock. Weatherby should just send you a new stock and be done with it. I've personally never had any problem with using a Lead Sled, but I also don't weigh mine down. I use it mostly to hold and steady the rifle, and still absorb most of the recoil myself.

    • @whiteyfisk9769
      @whiteyfisk9769 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Same. I NEVER use weight in led sled, i only use it for removing the human factor during sight in. Its simple physics, the energy has to go somewhere, and if you dont let the gun recoil, that energy goes straight into the scope

    Wow, I feel your pain. That is an obvious unseen flaw in the wood and after a little use the imperfection expanded. I over torqued a thousand screws on Weatherbys and never split a stock and I can be a Cave man and at times I really over torqued action screws. One thing, get a better slotted screwdriver, those action screws are easy to mess up, why Weatherby uses that type of screw head is puzzling. Your screws already look damaged. Again I have Mkv s from the seventies and my stocks still look new with me administrating major over torquing. That stock should be replaced. Good Luck and again we all go through events like this, it is a total bummer.

  • @kearneydillon4803
    @kearneydillon4803 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Thats not an ammo issue. Its a wood issue. Not cured properly and not bedded. I had this happen with a Vanguard deluxe. I suspect poor curing. My gunsmith said bedding would have most likely prevented it. I think properly routing the wood for good action fit and curing properly for no twists is best prevention. I dont think aftermarket bedding should be needed for ANY factory rifle.

    So sorry to hear about your stock breaking, I really hope they decide to take care of you, especially considering your channel is dedicated to Weatherby's and also because if they don't the whole world will know about it. We all know (and they do to) that your handloads did not cause that stock to break. Factory loads would have had a greater effect than your starting load. There's no telling how many people have bought Weatherby rifles because of your channel. But if they don't take care of you, I would highly recommend the HS Precision, if they still make one for the Mark V. You can get a ton of different colors and that is the single toughest, most durable stock I have ever used - or am even aware of.

    • @8MM.PRC.HUNTER
      @8MM.PRC.HUNTER 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Unfortunately HS Precision doesn't do the Mark V - only the Vanguard. You could always get a Bell and Carlson - in either the Weatherby monte carlo or straight comb sporter style. But I do hope Weatherby does the right thing here.

    • @8MM.PRC.HUNTER
      @8MM.PRC.HUNTER 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@borkwoof696 True. But a new rifle that costs that much should have better wood than that. It may look nice but that means nothing if it will split that easily. They are just trying to get out of covering something that's defective by saying if the gun was used with handloads they won't cover it. Roy Weatherby, the companies founder, was a wildcatter, and therefore used handloads! If they won't fix this then it will sure make a lot of people think twice before spending that kind of money on one of their rifles (at least a wood stocked one).

    I am a 68 year old mechanical Tradesman. The manufacturer is liable for a defective product. A premium product failing is even worse. A product that fails in the hands of a VERY respectable TH-cam presenter is probably the worst case scenario. Hand load ammo from this TH-cam presenter is not a contributing factor. Unfortunately wood is not a product that gets x-rayed for structural defects. But in anycase, the manufacturer needs to fix this problem!
    I love every one of your shooting videos. The Data you give is always good, the shooting is even better! I was on the fence between buying a 6.8 Western or a 7 PRC as my top rifle for long range. Your actual shooting videos showed us all how the 6.8 Western actually delivers the better product.

    RW, that sux. Personally I think that Weatherby will make it right. That was a beautiful piece of walnut. Two things come to mind. 1. I have always tightened the front action screw first. That's the way I was taught and have never read the owners manual. I my experience the rear action screw does little for the action or rifle. I thought I misheard you at first or it was a misprint. 2. I did have a Weatherby, 340 actually, that the stock inletting at the front of the action and recoil lug was absolutely horrible. Fortunately I caught this issue and was able to epoxy bed that area. I just wonder if this might have happened to your rifle. Maybe the recoil lug recoiled into the stock, causing the crack. If you think about it, who checks the inletting on a new rifle ? Now the rifle that I had that issue with was a Mark V from the early to mid 80's. But mistakes do happen. If you haven't shipped you rifle back yet, you may want to check it.
    I know you feel pretty down just now, it shows, but stop that. One way or another that rifle will be up and running. You'll love the 340, it is Thor's hammer. But the biggest best thing is you dropped the weight and improved your health. Your family gets to keep you around for years to come. Blue steel and walnut comes and goes, health and family doesn't. Stay strong.
    Cheers Jeff

    Sorry to hear about the breakage. I wouldn't worry about Weatherby not making it right. It would be suicidal for them to not take care of such a fan and promoter of their fire arms, not to mention quite a following that this will effect. Honestly, as much as I love the Weatherby's I have and have had, not every one of them were perfect. I still hear of several that were duds in accuracy and fit and finish, not to mention rough bolts and sloppy bolts. I was considering purchasing one of their titanium back country models but now I am seriously compelled to wait this out and see how they treat you, but again, I'm pretty sure they will fix it. What really sticks out in your case is that you used reloads, but you have a knowledge and a good reputation of integrity in that area. On stocks, it might merit going plastic/composite but I get the whole class act of that rifle you have. Stay positive and don't let this get you so down and keep us posted. So sorry that this happened after all of your hard work to get the rifle. The warranty policy says that the damage will not be covered IF it was caused by handloaded, releaded or improper ammunition. It does not say that the warranty is void if handloaded or reloaded ammunition is used. It seems to me that they need to determine that the damage was caused by your ammunition in order to not cover the damage. I would press them on that and see what evidence they have that the ammunition caused the damage. Wood, by its very nature, is pronet to cracking and is not a perfectly consistent product. 340 Weatherby Magnum recoil is very stout. Good luck!

    Let me tell you something I've been collecting, Reloading, shooting and hunting with weatherby Mark 5's for over 40 years. I have had 4 cracked stocks. I have seen many others, especially through the pistol grip. On the Japanese guns they reinforced the wrist
    with a 4 and a 1/2 inch threaded rod and a metal insert behind the magazine cutout. Every Mark 5 I take the barreled action out of the stock to look for cracks. A Weatherby authorized gunsmith had a dozen Mark 5 stocks, (I counted them) all cracked and under warranty. Every couple of months he called Weatherby where are the replacement stocks the lady said they were putting them on the new guns,
    One dealer would not carry them. He said they're junk.

    I will share my last interaction with Weatherby involving a stock. I purchased a new Vanguard Bronze in 6.5x300.A very nice rifle I might add. I have been reporting issues with copper fouling. After a break in session at the range the barrel was completely fouled with copper therefore at home I cleaned the barrel with Bore Tech copper solvent. I inadvertently spilled the solvent on the stock and this action removed the finish. I called Weatherby admitted that the failure was my oversight and requested any information on how I could restore the finish. To my surprise they replaced the stock no questions. I will say again it was my oversight that created that failure. I am positive they will assist you the same professional manner. Again, good luck.

    They have treated me awesome the one time I needed it.
    It was an accuracy issue.
    The first lady told me if I was wrong I'd have to pay a range fee.
    The next guy I talked to said forget about a range fee and they sent me a prepaid box.
    I sent it and they agreed it didn't shoot good enough, so they put a new barrel on it, tested it and sent it back.
    I had to pay nothing.
    I wouldn't worry about it at this point because id be shocked if they didn't swap out the stock and if they say no, talk to a higher up and you will get it replaced.
    That's crappy news, but at this point, all I'd worry about is if the next stock will be as pretty.
    It's not like they don't expect you to reload, although I would try some factory ammo to test the factory guarantee.
    As far as lead sleds being a big deal, in a podcast I listened to by the guys testing rifles, one of them said he used a lead sled.
    He just said not to put any weight on it.
    Sorry man. Sometimes life throws a hickup.

    Man, this makes my stomach hurt. Hopefully, they find a flaw and cover it under warranty for you. I agree that the barrel and stock are a match. I couldn’t imagine any other stock other than perhaps a custom made walnut stock. But, you’re probably at or well above what a factory stock would cost. Best of luck with the whole situation. Looking forward to some good news!!! 🤞🏻

    Mine cracked too. Mine cracked at the tang into the pistol grip. I fixed it with epoxy and then refinished it. If you fix it make sure you drill that bolt hole out a little bigger. I'm betting they drilled that hole a little crooked and the bolt is up against the stock when tightened. Then bed that recoil lug with some clear epoxy. You should have told them you shot factory ammo. Because the ammo don't have anything to do with it. Sometimes you can fix those hairline cracks with epoxy and blend that right in with those high gloss finishes and you won't even see it. If you replace it you got to go with the same stock. After spending all that money,the grain in those stocks is beautiful and what makes a Mark V a Mark V deluxe.

    I’ve always been a Weatherby fan and have three of their rifles… all synthetic stocked. If they are the top tier company that they claim to be they will replace that stock no questions asked. I also have a Seekins Havak PH2 and I can say with their warranty they would replace that stock no questions asked.

    Dude! Why oh why were you so honest about using reloads? Everyone knows that warranties are going to be voided with most manufacturers when you use reloads. I fully understand Weatherby's position on this one because they have no control over inept reloader's or reloader's trying to make a rifle do way more than it's capable of, eg. making a 308 Remchester shoot as fast as a 300 Wby.
    Given that your an experienced reloader, I'm hoping that Weatherby inspects your stock for flaws (fancy grained walnut can be weak compared to straight grained walnut) and deems that it was a stock failure. I'M ALSO HOPING THAT ALL YOUR SUPPORTERS WILL EMAIL WEATHERBY TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT AS WELL. Good luck Austin, I can't wait for your next update.

    My heart goes out to you over this, and as I have absolutely no faith in warranties having seen every warranty get "lawyer loopholed" out from coverage when its even a cut and dry case, I would say it may be time to consider alternatives.
    Im a fan of old guns, and wood stocks will often split on those old rifles as pressure and humidity play games with the grain. Being that it was a heavily figured walnut stock, my money is on internal stress due to the burl being almost enough to split it as is and all it needed was a shock to actually split. You did nothing wrong, Id say it would have split even with the shock of a factory load just to normalize itself. That said, have you ever looked into wooden stock repairs? They were done extensively on old pieces from before our era and often left the stock with a bit more character but a lot stronger for the repair?

    If Weatherby won't repair or replace it, my recommendation would be to get a McMillan Weatherby Mark V replacement stock for range work and hunting and cosmetically repair your original stock for aesthetics. You might find a competent gunsmith who can repair and upgrade your existing stock and also make it usable again.

    I feel so bad for you Austin. You seem like a heck of a nice guy. Unfortunately, Weatherby doesn’t care about the sacrifices you made. I hope I’m wrong but, I think they they will weasel their way out of replacing your stock. At the very most, they will probably cover part of the replacement cost, if they cover any cost at all. I’ve heard that their customer service at Weatherby sucks. That stock probably already had a flaw from the factory that snuck through quality control. It might have already been cracked from the inside. The problem is that because you were using handloads instead of factory loads. They will tell you they aren’t liable because they have no control over your reloading methods and practices. I work as a mechanic at a Peterbilt dealership and when customers have engine warranty issues, Paccar and Cummins always find a way to screw the dealership and get out of paying. They make the dealership do a bunch of troubleshooting that we aren’t getting paid for. Unfortunately, we live in a dishonest world. My best wishes to you. Again, I hope I’m wrong.

    Sorry to see that happen. Of course, I am sure you know of Boyd's. Their wood laminate stocks are affordable and offer some customization, such as engraving, if you want it. They do make them for Weatherby (long action.)
    And there are some others. Which may or may not help. The price of the stock being what it is. However, I believe you can get the Boyds with aluminum pillars for bedding. That can take higher torque and not impact the wood. I looked at your model at the Wby site and I could not tell what kind of bedding there is, if any.

    Sorry to hear, future ref, always buy a box or two of factory for break-in. I know it's hindsight, but I do this with all my firearms. I reload for 14 calibers and several gauges, but break-in, I stick to factory until I see how everything works. Just makes it easier.

    That rifle should have 2 (two) recoil bolts supporting the MAGNUM ACTION….. That is a manufacturing defect. Any rifle over 30-06 range in wood stocks wears recoil bolts……. Look at Sako. Browning Mausers and yes Winchester Model 70 wood Stocks, no wonder it split.

    Absolutely heartbreaking to hear. However, they will most likely replace it with a “Hey, don’t shoot reloads again” my dad had a guy reload for his 1950s .375 H&H Sako FN Mauser Magnum rifle. It was back in the 90s. The action seized. Sent it back to Sako (Without telling them it was reloads) and the told him the powder and approximate amount of grains used. They fixed it and told him they didn’t have to cover it and not to shoot reloads through it again. He has Shot Federal Premium through it ever since… lol
    Gun companies USUALLY make the warranty limitation to cover their butts from lawsuits and morons. Plus, Weatherby is owns by good people who hunt. Needless to say, I prayed for the situation to 😉
