He's definitely got a lot of love in his heart. It's just buried under a hard exterior.
Like you said, it shows when he talks about his wife/cats/etc.
Edit: you can also hear it in his voice, the rules he placed and, how talks about the kids reveal it. IMO he really wants to give the kids the structure he never had so they don't go down the same path he did.

He probably didn't see any other options at the time when he was a criminal and didn't have guidance from a stable family, something not everyone is fortunate enough to have. Everyone makes mistakes when they're young but only if you don't learn from those mistakes are you deserving of being called a POS. This guy learned from those mistakes and should be rewarded for realizing that and changing his life. You think selling drugs is an easy way of life? Think again. He could've died many times I'm sure. He didn't think he had another choice. He blamed others for his problems because they were part of his problems but he also gave credit to those who helped him, such as his wife. He was lucky and you should be celebrating his success as a role model for other criminals to change, instead of bashing him. @@RollerBladingSuxs

He did his time in juvenile hall for beating his abusive father that locked his sister and him in a basement for days without food for “misbehaving”. You obviously dont have any sympathy because you dont have a heart to begin with. His adult charges was for slinging drugs and was deported to korea so regardless his crimes were some of the most mild he couldve committed and still you wish him to rot. Nah, it's just our normal Californian lingo. Sometimes, it can even be insulting calling someone "kid", it's like saying "I know more than you so whatever I say is right and whatever you say is wrong" or just flat-out considering the person unworthy and immature in certain context. just like "boy" or "girly/girl". It's all situational though. Other times we can just call people "kid" if we're 3+ years older than them as a normal way to address them, but "dude", "gal", "bro" or "chick", are more equivalent to being close to them.
An example of it as an insult: "Shut up kid, you don't know what you're talkin' about."
Friendly/close manner: "This dude's got it in the bag. He's my bro, trust me he knows what he's doing." (Girl variant: " This gal's got it in the bag. She's the chick, trust me she knows what she's doing.")

The first reply is correct. It is not meant as an insult to the French or Francophones. The original expression was used when an English speaker literally was apologizing for speaking French to non French speakers who wouldn't understand around 1860. Later in about 1936 it started being used only half seriously to pass cursing off as French.

Redemption. Rehabilitation. Resurrection. What an inspiring story. Everyone deserves a second chance. Along his life path, he could have killed himself and "ended" the pain so many times. So glad that he met good people at the most desperate times, and found the inner strength to not take permanent action for a "temporary" problem. God be with you and keep you safe, Chef D.

I love his insight about success: failing a lot, and the highlight to me is when he said "People might say: Well, he could never do this without his wife. And they're right. But, you also have to give that person a reason to stay. And I think she's seen that." This just shows how humble he is. He acknowledges the help he's received but he's definitely worked his way through to be a better person than his past. To be his own person in the present.

Then he answered: "and, they are right"
His answer surprised me in a good way! Because some boy/male are too full of themselves and their ego. This really shows that he is a man who is honest and manly/mature. He got himself a great wife that believed in him since day one and will always support him. Hope he treat her right!
