    Summary(Important Notes) of
    The Fiqh of Salah
    Episode 22: Jumuah Prayer
The people on whom the 5 daily prayers are Wajib, will have Jumuah as Wajib too if they are in the following conditions -
    1. Living in a city(buildings, not tents).
    2. There is a reasonable distance(فرسخ) between him and the Mosque.
Jumuah Prayer is not Wajib on the following people -
    1. Women.
    2. Slaves.
    3. Traveller(even if he is in a city now).
    4. Children.
    5. The People with a Legitimate Excuse - Severe rain, sickness, fear.
If any of these people(except the one who has an excuse) come for Jumuah prayer, it is allowed but their presence is not required for the congregational prayer. However, if the person who has an excuse somehow manages to come, his presence will now be Wajib in the congregational prayer.
Conditions for the Jumuah Prayer -
    1. Timing of Jumuah:
All three Madhabs say the time of Jumuah is the time of Zuhr but the Hambali Madhab says the timing is the same as the timing of Eid Salah(before Zawaal).
Hambali Madhab have taken this ruling from the Hadith in Sahih Muslim where it states that Jumuah would finish and they would reach their camels before Zawaal. The other Madhabs say that Jaber(the narrator) can be estimating and it’s not a ruling.
    2. It must be in a “Qariyah”:
“قرية” is a permanent settlement, kind of like a small village.
    3. Minimum Quantity of people on whom Jumuah is Wajib:
The Malikis say 12. The Hambalis and Shafis say 40. Hanafis say a large amount that would fill the Mosque. In the Qur’an and Hadith, there is nothing explicit about this. According to Hambali Madhab, there have to be 40 people who are from that “قرية” and Jumuah should be Wajib on them. However, Ibn Taimiyyah said it can be done with 3 people.
    4. Two Khutbahs:
There should be 2 Khutbahs before the Jumuah prayer, this, according to Hambali Madhab, is Wajib. Hambali Madhab says there should be 4 things in each Khutbah - Some type of praise of Allah, Prayers on the Prophet(SAW), At least 1 Ayah, and Some Advice. It is recommended that the Khutbah be done on the Minbar(elevated platform).
The Imam stands on the Mimbar, says Salaam to the people, and sits down. The Azaan happens and then he stands up and gives the first Khutbah, sits down, and then stands up and gives the second Khutbah. There is no disagreement about this procedure among all 4 Madhabs.
The majority(including the Hambali Madhab) says that if he catches even one Rakah out of the two, he has caught the Jumuah. Hambali Madhab says that he should make up one Rakah. If he doesn’t catch the second Rakah, he has missed Jumuah and he has to make up the 4 Rakahs of the Zuhr prayer.
During the prayer, if the number goes down(40 to 39) or the time of Zuhr finishes, and if the first Rakah is done, then they will continue it as the Jumuah prayer(2 Rakahs). However, if either of these happens before the first Rakah is done(before the Ruku), then they will convert the prayer into Zuhr(4 Rakahs). This is the position of the Hambali Madhab.
It is not allowed to pray more than one Jumuah in any city unless there is a dire need to do so. This is the standard position of all the Madhabs.
Recommendations for the one who comes to pray the Jumuah prayer -
    1. Taking a bath: This is Mustahab for the one who does not smell bad. It is Wajib for the one who smells bad.
    2. Clean Clothes.
    3. Comes Early.
    4. Wears Perfume.
If he comes while the Imam is giving the Khutbah, he doesn’t sit down unless he prays two Rakahs quickly and then sits down.
It is not allowed to speak during the Khutbah. The only people who can speak are the Imam and the one Imam addresses during the Khutbah. However, if somebody needs to tell the Imam about an issue or emergency, it is allowed for him to speak up and this is not considered breaking the silence that a Khutbah requires.
    This ends the entire summary.
Anyone who thinks I have missed some point is welcome to reply but please give the time in the lecture when Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi talked about it so that I can be sure.
    JazakaAllah Khair

i live in a multi-faith secular non-muslim country where schools (govt or private) must stop all activities from 12noon to 2pm on fridays. This is to allow muslim students to attend friday jumaa. Non-muslim students love fridays cos they, too, will get the break.
Eventho the muslim population in the country is less than 30%, this is mandatory for fridays.
Hence, all companies and businesses automatically understand that friday between the same hours, their male muslim employees are allowed to take time out for friday jumaa.
In show of solidarity, most muslim female employees wear modestly like long covered dresses on fridays. Hijabs for female employees are optional. But they can wear hijabs at work if they choose.
This is a highly fascinating rule for a country that i have not experienced in other non muslim countries. I mean, this is the country's national standard for friday!! For real.
And interestingly, muslim employees are granted about 1 hour early work release on ramadan. This is to allow them to have iftar at home.
Also, it is mandatory by law for every public foodcourts to have halal food. Can u believe it?
Does your non-muslim country have such amazing rules?
Due to its high tolerance of islamic culture, it is a great country for muslims to live in this country. This rule is still practised in 2024 and beyond. Insha'allah.

Hanafis require 3 mature, sane Muslim males besides the Imam. Not sure if Shaykh Yaser Qahdi made a mistake here but just wanted to correct him in case because he said that the masjid should be full but this isn’t the case in the Hanafi madhab and Allah knows best
