      Jared: The Dark Knight. The idea that society is built upon a series of noble lies has resonated with me since I read The Grand Inquisitor in college.

      @WisecrackEDU 6 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      Jacob: We're actually strongly considering making this video as a new channel trailer. Jared and I have done a lot of soul-searching to think about what Wisecrack really stands for. Generally, we're all about showing the world how great art can be, but in that process we want to expose people to other world-views. Art and media can be a great lens through which to understand and reflect upon the world. We want to introduce and explore those ideas-all without taking ourselves too seriously.

    #WisecrackAMA, do you think that there is a sort of return of themes from Antiquity in how fiction and movies are written nowadays ?
    I see parallels between Monty Python, South Park, Rick and Morty and such minds as Diogenes, Lucian of Samosata, Homer, etc... with relativism, nihilism (optimistic or pessimist), reflexion on how ridiculous different cultures appear, satire, critic, phillosphy and literary expression joined with crude topics like scatology and such.

    • @WisecrackEDU
      @WisecrackEDU 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Jared: This is a great question. The answer is yes, although I can’t speak to all of your citations directly (I’m much more familiar with Diogenes and Homer, and have very little familiarity with Lucian of Samosota), I can point you to our recent Deadpool/advertising video that touched on some of these things. In fact, Peter Sloterdijke’s book “Critique of Cynical Reason” is kind of all about this, complete with an entire section about the cynicism of scatalogical topics. But I’m interested to hear more about your angle. Email us!

    • @WisecrackEDU
      @WisecrackEDU 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Jared: I did see it. I thought the first act was pretty boring, but as soon as Michael B Jordan lands in Wakanda it becomes one of the better Marvel movies. I think they did a great job of subtly evoking some of the themes put forward by contributors like Ta-Nehisi Coates. Basically, the movie isn’t COMPLETELY toothless from a political perspective, and that’s pretty cool for a Marvel movie.
      Robert: I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m a huge fan of Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan - in my mind, they have the potential to be the Scorsese/De Niro of our generation. Seeing it tonight.

    In your opinion, does Interstellar adequately create a bridge between human emotion and cold, calculated fact?
    AND does Dunkirk adequately create a bridge between the human desire to survive, and the classic idea of heroism?

    • @WisecrackEDU

    What criteria warrants a video? Is it by fan interest, or personal staff interest? Do you plan on doing a philosophy of devilman video or is it too simple? #WisecrackAMA

    • @WisecrackEDU
      @WisecrackEDU 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Jared: I haven’t seen Devilman yet. As far as what warrants a video: unfortunately it’s a constant push and pull between what we’re passionate about and what we think might perform well/allow us to survive. For example, I’d love to do a video on David Cronenberg’s film Videodrome, but all the data points to the video performing really poorly. I’m constantly trying to think of ways to break out of this pattern, and build formats that will compel people to click even if they aren’t already familiar with the property we’re covering. We’ve got a way to go.
      Jacob: We look at what we like, but also what fans request and what's popular out in the world. For us the big win is to find properties that are both hugely popular and hugely insightful. Our goal is to attract as many people as possible into our videos in order to get the word out about great ideas and topics. It's not a science, but we definitely look at the results and performance of our releases to do as well as we can with each video we make.

I mean, I know you don't want to piss your audience off, but it's by challenging people with different points of view that you cure - or limit - confirmation bias, and get us out of our collective bubble.

      Robert: As someone who grew up with the Harry Potter series, I support this idea. I’m not sure how much we’ll be able to pick out of it philosophically, but I’d leave that to the writers/researchers.
      Jared: People have asked us this over the years and I feel like it’s a bit too captain obvious- the power of interpersonal connection with some fascist imagery sprinkled in that must be overcome. It’s incredible world-building and character development, but difficult to analyze from a ideological perspective without it becoming nonsense.

  • @Mamba4.8
    @Mamba4.8 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The one thing left out, which is a major theme and primary theme of the two movies, is time. Time is one of Nolans favorite themes, it's relativity, and the concept of being unbound by time. Inception dealt with time as well as Momento. But in these two movies, Interstellar of course deals with relativity, but it also deals with what if you were unbound by time completely. Time is also an antagonist, as Cooper wants to get home before too much time goes by to see his daughter. In Dunkirk, one of the reasons why Nolan didn't show the enemy soldiers is because time is the enemy and antagonist of the film. With the one week, one day, one hour structure, all three stories are racing against time and trying to survive withing it's confines. Those on the beach are waiting to be saved in time before the soldiers close in, those in the boat are trying to make it to them in time, and Hardy's character in the air is trying to do his job in time before the gas runs out, which the gas running out I think is one of the most brilliant parts of the film to suggest this to the audience.

    Dunkirk was so good. The sound design, music, and emotion of the characters really felt like virtual reality without the head set. Every time I heard a gun shot I felt genuine fear and panic, when the boat was torpedoed I gripped my arm rests like my life depended on them, and when I saw the full struggle of the shell shocked soldier and perseverance of the civilian sailors I felt genuine emotion like no movie has ever done before. Dunkirk is Nolan’s masterpiece is my opinion.

    • @WisecrackEDU
      @WisecrackEDU 6 ปีที่แล้ว +120

      Jared: I think the reason why film buffs love it so much is because it’s a great example of how the LANGUAGE of cinema can communicate intellectual ideas without using dialogue or plot. This film, along with the works of David Lynch, are much less about the plot and more about the way that they use images, sound, music, rhythm, momentum, etc to create a tone, and evoke a sense of wonder. When you’re watching a film about the frontiers of what is “knowable,” it doesn’t make sense to explore it through plot and dialogue. Using the language of film to evoke emotions and feelings outside of logic is a much more profound statement. I hope that doesn’t sound like pretentious drivel.
