Taksim is a melodic improvisation...rarely will it stay in the same makam(mode--rather melodic recipe that includes habitual motifs often encountered in the musical culture). Most of the time the soloist will start in the parent makam and goes to a related makam by means of a common tetrachord(4 sounds not chord). Then he will come back to the parent makam. A master can go to a very distantly related makam.
Hi, I am a student of music. I'm trying to understand the form of this music. I see that before the tanbur and bendir joined in, the ney player played by himself a while. Is he improvising? Is that what is meant by "taqsim?"
Taksim means division. Interlude exactly, in musical sense. Taksim is used to tie sections of a concert called fasıl especially if more than a single mode is played. It is used to accommodate the ear for the next mode to be played. It is usually a semi improvised piece revolving around a standard acquired from a master with variations added by the individual player. Instrumentalist usually memorizes his or her taksim for each mode, playing more or less the same piece with slight variations to suit the following section.
You see in turkish music we have makams. In turkish classical music culture you dont just dive in to the music first you need to do a taksim to let the audience know which makam the piece you are going to play. Its like an appetizer . And for instince you have finished the first piece and now you are going to play another piece but the second piece has a different makam. Then you should do a taksim that slowly switches makams. For example from makam segah to makam hicaz your taksim should be something like this. Segah has Cnatural and Bnatural. But hicaz has Csharp and Bflat. As you play the taksim slowly slowly stop using cnatural and start using csharp, do the same thing with Bnatural to bflat. Now you have moved from segah to hicaz in a very soothing and relaxing way. Isnt it amazing?
