I also want to make it clear if the author themselves want to change the race of their character it's fine like Oda making Nojiko black in the live action of One Piece or JK liking the idea of a black Hermione, the reason why it's okay is because it's their work and if you're a writer and/or artist you'll relate to changing your character designs over time whether it's their hairstyle, skin colour, outfits, etc. Also I made a mistake sorry Gon has no canon race so pls imagine I used Killua as the example lol
Also I've been getting comments telling me Darwin is black, and I don't rlly get why because I never said Darwin wasn't black, I know the ppl commenting mean well, but I feel like they all keep misinterpreting what I said, I mentioned Darwin, Garnet, and Simba as examples of BLACKCODING so that means drawing them as humans as a race other than black wouldn't be considered a headcanon, because they are canonically black, but I also said a disclaimer that some very few times blackcoding isn't intentional, for example, Starfire, but most times it is

See I kinda go the other way, while I may do art of my characters and have hard rules for non human appearances, if their humans I only described clothes and any unusual traits, you can head cannon any race and it’s fine as long as those signature traits are maintained. Take Clair, exemplar of love, she is described as an air headed valley girl with parents who seem to live on a different plant with how out of touch with normal people they are. My ref art has her blonde and white. But you wanna make her Asian? Sure. Black, fine. But once you start changing her traits and style it’s no longer Clair

I don't mind headcanons MOST of the time. I get annoyed when people are upset that their headcanons don't become the canon itself or say that they're better. Oh, and also, even as a non-autistic person, it annoys me when people headcanon every cheerful or happy character as autistic. It's not about the fact that they're autistic, but more about the fact that people LOVE infantilizing autistic people for no reason and treat them like babies.
Edit: I'd also apply it to people headcanoning every serious, sad, or gloomy character as aroace. Like, I'm sorry, but as aro person myself, we can be optimistic and outgoing, we are not depressed or broken because we don't feel romantic/sexual attraction, we are happy the way we are.

What's the need of inserting a race, religion, sexuality, gender, or flag onto a FICTIONAL character that was never intended to be associated with said concept by the creator in the first place? The craziest part of this imo is people vehemently arguing over what race said (insert fictional colored animal) is. I just think it's people trying to impose their real-world characteristics such as race or sexuality onto a fictional character (getting mad at people who dont agree with them in the process) and it honestly baffles me why people do this in the first place.

im literally baffled with the amount of people who borderline started harassing me on Pinterest for saying that Mulder and Scully (characters from a show called The X Files, quite an old one and doesn't have a massive fandom) are both cisgender and straight 💀 it was just a tornado of people who HC them as "bi/trans" yelling at me in the replies that "im wrong". to me PERSONALLY (tw: opinion!!), i think that to have a headcanon, that said thing you HC should have been at least SLIGHTLY hinted at, for example how i HC Mulder to have ADHD because of his hyperfixation with aliens/space and conspiracies, constant need of oral fixation which can be taken as stimming (always munching on sunflower seeds) which people with ADHD often might do, constantly has to be doing smth and cant stand boredom, impulsive as heII, u get it. tell me ONE time that either of them has shown even the slightest romantic or sexual interest towards someone of the same gender, or has mentioned anything that could be associated with them being trans, PLEASE 🙏🏻 i genuinely can't stand some headcanons that have no reasoning behind them, the exact same thing goes for people who HC someone who has very obviously flirted with multiple genders as "straight", or someone who's shown signs and given hints of being trans/non-binary/genderfluid as "cis" 🤦🏻‍♀️ think Crowley from Good Omens, they're a canonically genderfluid character who uses all pronouns and somehow there's STILL people who try to cope so hard by saying "he looks like a man so he has to be cis!", the denial is insane bffr

On a note related to autism headcanons, there’s so many times where I’ve seen characters who simply just don’t know how to interact with people and then they’re labeled as autistic. Most of the time, these are characters who have been isolated for all of their lives, and struggle simply because they haven’t had the chance to actually communicate with others. I just.. think it’s odd that other people take something that is so important to a character’s story and how they act, and then make it way less of a big deal by saying it’s just autism-coded. It’s so very clearly trauma, an isolated person isn’t gonna figure out social boundaries in a split second. I could take a character who’s been forced to live in a basement all their life, barely talking to people, put them out in a sociable setting.. and then automatically they’re autistic? The character is just trying to figure things out… I just don’t get it??

As someone with autism i can say it greatly annoys me when people heacdcanon characters as a certain mental disability or illness because their canon traits for other disabilities or illnesses can also be symptoms of that. Well i guess it's less headcanons i dislike but when people say a character is "coded" when theyre coded for an entirely different thing.
For example ive seen many people say Lucifer from hazbin hotel IS autistic (even going as far to lie about it being confirmed or canon) while using his symptoms of depression as "proof" it is true many traits are shared between them but depression traits are extremely misrepresented and are often only shown as the "sad" symptoms when depression isn't just being sad. Saying these traits that are incredibly misunderstood for a disorder are actually symptoms of a more widely understood (though extremely misunderstood still) disability. You're practically erasing his accurate depression representation by excusing those symptoms with something else. It's also just weird to headcanon the guy that was cast out for his crazy ideas as autistic, like autistic people while sometimes have misunderstood ideas because of how they express these goals never just have "crazy ideas" for things like all of creation. We can also i guess be more creative but the fact he eas thrown out for litterally creating evil just makes it so weird to headcanon him as a very demonised disability.
Im going to talk about something a little more nsfw so be warned going forwards. Another popular hc i see is people making a s3xual dynamic with him and his wife where he acts like a child or baby (which is especially bad since the character is short and s3xualising short men like that is so weird because why do they always have to be the more "submissive" one?) And it being pared with a disability that is often babied is crazy.
Another example of this is people having the headcanon Sero from mha is Hispanic but then also having the hc he smokes weed or even sells it. Those two are definitely connected and fine on their own but put together and you have a disgusting harmful stereotype.

I wouldn't care if someone hc someone who's meant to be canonly depressed as also autistic because that's something that can and very often does happen. It would be if they claim that "No he's not depressed those are actually all autism traits" that's when I'd start getting frustrated.

Wait, when they say "sad" symptoms, are they talking about the feeling of being sad or do they mean the acronym "SAD"? I have SAD(Seasonal Affective Disorder). It's almost the same as Depression but I get it seasonally, usually starting in the fall and ending in late spring. Just mentioning that in case, because that's a common thing that gets confused. But yeah it is weird, I grew up on characters that were just one-dimensional, Flanderised or had tropes, so if a character was really dumb(like those incompetent henchmen characters) we would just be like "oh that character is really silly and stupid" but nowadays people label them as having a disorder, disability or something else.(This is just one example of one type of character, the list goes on forever) I know plenty of people who are legit really stupid, and they have no diagnoses, mental illness, disabilities, or anything of the sort. You can have a dumb character simply for the sake of being dumb.
My teacher used to work at a school for children with learning disabilities and she said so many of the kids struggled so hard to function normally and learn, she would never call any of them stupid. When she started working with regular high school kids, she said a lot of them didn't want to work or learn and were too lazy and spoiled, she said "Those ones are the real idiots. They have everything they need to learn and succeed in their education, but they don't want to."

As someone who is Caucasian and was planning on deleting tiktok anyways, I decided to finally give my opinion on how blackwashing was just racist and basically theft when it was just drawn over a character. I immediately was told to kill myself when I said my thoughts on it and how it was just racist and was rude towards the character's creator. They didn't even glance at my problems at it. They just wanted to be mad at someone. Thank you for making this video and saying something that I agree with all the points on so people will actually listen to this topic.

I’m sorry but as a white person you don’t have a say in the matter of whether or not “Blackwashing” a character is racist or not. like at all. not to say that uou being told to kill yourself was justified. when black people create drawings where characters actually look like them, sound like them, behave like them, it is in a realm of solidarity and relatibility. It is hard to find characters that look like us in media - especially anime and manga (if there are any they are heavily whitewashed as the show goes on). You cannot say that black people making headcanons on characters to feel more represented in media they enjoy is racist or disrespectful to the creators of the content when we weren’t included in said content anyways. even than with the coding thing, it can be pretty questionable and can be dangerously close to be basically stereotyping again, especially when you consider that culture is tied to surroundings and beliefs, not directly to your ethnicity as separate races can be taking part in that same culture for one reason or the other. it does have the obvious majority taking part of it, but i do feel like coding sometimes leads to more questionable issues then fixing them.

Can I ask where POC Wolfwood comes from? It's not the manga, because Nightow takes a lot of creative liberties with how he renders skin tone from scene to scene, and the animes can be just as varied depending on the screenshots you find. I think it's possible he could be a person of color who has lighter skin (and therefore his tone changes more drastically depending on the lighting of a scene), but a lot of people just seem REALLY EAGER to "claim" him. I am confused why you as an Asian spoke in such a manner about Black people's sentiments when Asian characters in Anime have many White characters for quite some time and a good amount of these Anime characters are canonically White yet it's a problem for Black people to want Black characters in Anime as well and not just the White coded or canonically White characters? Had you spoken about this pressing double standards in Anime then I would understand bringing Black people into it. The author Kishimoto famous for Naruto for example has stated Naruto is blond and blue eyed to appeal to Whites aka "Westerners". Other Japanese authors have stated the same sentiments. It isn't rocket science to figure out which characters are clearly meant to embody the stereotypical White phenotype yet this generation likes to act obtuse going "but but X people can have", "but but they were never said to be White". One learns context clues in education. Nonetheless, this is Black individuals issue in Anime. It is also problematic to think that simply because it's less in the population that they shouldn't have representation. White people once thought this as well in the past. Let us not repeat history and instead understand why things happen the way they do as a reaction to an action and so on. I feel this is just as harmful as people erasing Alastor's asexuality and downright being bigot about it (feel free to watch Ayy Lmao's video on Alastor being AroAce with evidence from those who work in Hazbin and Viv herself) or people forcing blackwashing on others and saying it's factually a better version of said characters.

The first one is obvious. Calling someone weird or straight it racist for not seeing a character as black (like Pinkie Pie from Mlp) is just so wrong. I've seen people genuinely say that they don't trust people who raw Pinkie as any race other than black.
And for the second one it's something that personally annoys me SO MUCH. It's mostly used for shipping, but it can also be for pronouns, gender identities, disabilities or sexual orientations. Again with the Mlp example, I saw so many people say "Flutterdash is practically canon" or "I loved when Appledash was confirmed to be canon". First off, it can make people who are watching the show or jave never watch it to actually believe it was confirmed, when it never was, and when you correct these people they scream at you "It's just a ship of fictional characters CALM DOWN". Like, excuse me but YOU calm down, all i'm doing is say that you shouldn't be claiming something as canon nor call people who don't agree weirdos. As a black person changing a character to black isn’t representative of black people or culture. It’s just taking something someone already made, slapping new skin tone and acting like that means something. Real representation is making new original characters representing black culture. I just hate the excuse of its representation. It’s not it’s just table scraps. This is the shit Disney tries to do with the little mermaid and Tinker Bell. They just took iconic characters and change their skin tone instead of just making a new princess or a new character.

Code Name kids next door is a one of those shows that comes to mind, that u don't have to have the same skin colour as a character to relate to them, sometimes characters I saw as a kid that had the same skin tone as me completely didn't represent me as an individual because I didn't like their character or personality. Thats why good character writing is so important, the design is a minimal part of the character, its surface level and eventually isn't enough to support a character. People are so aggressive and take any disagreement or alternative opinion as an attack and label you so quickly. Your video was a great addition and perspective to this discussion!

You make a good point about headcannons being about things that aren't confirmed as canon. It's a gap that youre filling. It's just little things here and there. And I usually see people make a headcanon when it makes sense for that character.
But there comes a point when you gotta ask yourself if you even like the content you're consuming. If you're changing most of the characters, do you even like them? Wouldn't you wanna find a show or story that actually has CANON characters like that???

For example, while reading the percy jackson books growing up I always read Percy and his mother as hispanic as his appearance was never explained in detail other than his eyes and hair. With books it's easier for different readers to interpret characters in different ways, but I think when it comes to characters being shown in cartoons or movies where they're played by actors racechanging is very different.

You definitely need to watch Molly of Denali! It's a PBS KIDS show, but many people of all ages like it. The main character, Molly, is Native Alaskan with a Gwich'in, Koyukon, and Dena'ina background. Molly and her family commonly speak Gwich'in, and the characters perform traditional dances and songs in the show. Despite it being a kids show, some episodes get "mature" and deal with topics around racism, discrimination, and struggles Indigenous people have faced- with episodes like "Grandpa's Drum", "Molly and Elizabeth", and "Not a Mascot". I am Hispanic, but I like to think this show accurately represents Native Alaskan cultures, considering many fans and staff are Native Alaskan themselves. I'm also aware Native Americans and Native Alaskans are considered different according to some, but seeing that many Indigenous people liked the show and you wanted some positive representation, I thought I should recommend it to you.

I see this so much with a certain character from a quite obscure game that I really, really like. in canon he's a pale skinned, blue eyed redhead, but I have seen a lot of people draw him with various darker skintones, sometimes change his hairstyle/length/type to go with it. there's even this one artist who drew him as a dark haired, presumably trans woman, but still refer to him using his original very masculine name. damn near unrecognisable as the same guy. it's even more jarring because he's often drawn with some other characters who also have pale skin in canon and are kept that way in fanart.
I have heard that this is quite common practice with redhead characters elsewhere.
but at the same time I don't think I have a right to say that, because I am headcanoning an almost entirely made-up religion for him (it is apparently canon that he is religious but it isn't specified what. game takes place in a fictional world and there are only a few sparse references to its mythology and I guess I am expanding on that). it doesn't involve any changes to his appearance/way of dress tho...

I mainly agree. Although I'm just a white person that grew up in America. (I know very little of the one culture that my family knows they are aka Polish so... I'm not one to talk on cultures and stuff.)
I do had made many many characters (and designs for them), so I believe I can voice on that kinda matter.
    1. One thing about race headcanons is that the character has no stand ground on a character's race. I personally headcanon Mina at least part japanese due to her last name (I am a mega weeb, and know some things about hirigana and katakana) A-shi-do. Yes it is completely possible for her to be adopted as we have no information on her parents what-so-ever so in that way the headcanon just be just out of the way.
    2. On pro-shipping... don't do it. I believe the only "good" proships are canon proships that are portrayed in a bad light. Like in my story there is an abuser x victim. But by end karma go hit on the abuser and the abuser dies. (This abuser character is also a mass murderer so... it's not over-punishment.) Yes my stories does take on some darker topics.
Off topic but I'm basically just the kind of person that doesn't give their OC's a canon race. I don't pay mind. If one of my characters are a darker skin color I just click better with that character a darker tone.

A little idea for the body type headcanons part of this video,
If you want to draw a chubby character as skinny or a skinny character as chubby and post it on social media, you could put the caption to:
"Wanted to see how ____ would look like as skinny/chubby and oh my god they're beautiful/handsome/stunning/pretty either way!!"

Dude I see this so much with feminine males where people make them canonically transgender when all they are saying is that as a male you can’t be feminine or you were not born a male. It always peeves me so much as I am transgender and making a character trans who is a man who is feminine or a woman who is masculine as trans just shows how imbedded stereotypes are in society. Like I’ve seen so many videos on how dazai is transgender and I’m sitting there like 😑 cause it ain’t even representation whatsoever. Like find actual trans representation like Millie’s sister from hellavaboss. It’s like walking up to a feminine man and asking if they are trans. Like just ew

Another thing is that people forgot that headcanons aren’t necessarily about minorities.. they can be and it can be very valid under what you said, (heck I do that a lot too) but sometimes I just wanna headcanon about a characters favorite food, favorite animal, a hobby I think they would like that wasn’t shown in canon, little habits they do off screen like that yknow?

Honestly, people are just stripping Japanese characters out of their own representation. Even though it may be an anime, Japanese people are still getting their poc rep. But these people ONLY care about anime. There are plenty of shows with all kinds of rep. As you mentioned, Moon Girl has such rich representation and people turn a blind eye. Lunella is exactly what people want, a black female who's smart and a fun character. I love the show, they give more than that as well. There are Muslim characters, which I don't see a lot in other media. Casey, she's Puerto Rican and Jewish. Not only does it show color rep, but it shows a lot of rep that people crave. Same as Epithet Erased, it's a great indie show. The main character is a mixed autistic 12 year old who is so well written. All people care for anymore is "making rep" out of anime characters, but that's not actual rep. If you take a purely white character and just turn them black, it's still the same white character you started off with. It's so stupid, why can't we just be original? If you want black anime characters, just make them yourself.

It's really frustration, even as a white person, I see people say that white people get enough representation, which on its own is technically true, but when it comes to the cutrures, there's no way it feels like representation. I'm slavic and from what I know there's little to no representation of slavic people without it being the typical Russian villian named Vladimir (and even that is something I don't see much) or some shit, like there's 12 other slavic countries then Russia and thousands of names.

    Helluva boss:
Fizzaroli lost his hearing for a while after the explosion and had to learn sign language in case it never healed. It did eventually heal but he’s still hard of hearing and has hearing aids in his prosthetic horns.
That’s all I’ve got, I might edit this comment to add more tho.

Here’s my PERSONAL OPINION bcz I rlly wanted to talk abt this- (I’m poc)
It’s not bad to hc characters as black or poc or whatever unless it’s important to their story or if the creator of said media said that they don’t want people doing that to their characters. I haven’t seen many people doing this for reasons other than TRYING to create representation, for fun, or because they want a character they love as a pfp that looks like them. MOST of these people are really respectful. Plus, I really doubt million dollar companies (like Genshin) will care about some silly edit
Although it’s not okay to claim you’re fixing the character or adding representation that won’t be there no matter how hard you try. SOME of the art is also really good. As long as it isn’t hurting anyone it’s fine.

The genshin ones get me the most, because people really act like it's the worst thing ever when artists draw their Cyno’s, Kaveh’s, and Tighnari’s with darker skin. It's one thing if it's a really crappy edit (Hoyolab is full of them), but there's plenty of great edits out there. Ones like making Candace darker or just characters in general not the same pale white is great imo.
These games being made by a company that exists somewhere we know beauty standards are towards unhealthily pale skin tones is a bit of a tell why we don’t see much diversity. If you've ever played Zepeto, alot of Asian players use pale skin, long leg avatars, obviously because that's what they think is most attractive. I really can't see people making more Sumeru characters, especially, dark is an issue knowing this.
I mean, you're telling me in the region with many properly dark skinned people, Celestia only gave them to the palest ones? The answer is no, Hoyo just thinks only pale characters will sell the best, even when CN players have also complained.
Outside of Genshin though, I feel it's strange with shows like One piece too. Artists tend to agree on characters like Vivi as dark skinned since she's from a desert nation. Usopp as well tends to get darker skin. And if you watch, there's in general a good amount of characters who you'd assume would be black. I've got a good hunch with some of them, it's Toei’s doing, especially when ones like Usopp have gotten even paler in newer arcs.
TLDR: I definitely don't think it's wrong to take characters in regions where darker skinned folks are more common and mix it up with their skin tones respectfully, unless it’s story important like you said. (also apologizing for the text wall, I had a bit of thoughts)

Like I totaly agree with you cuz some people out their have atually lost their minds like I do some gacha stuff with friends with characters from animes but I respect that how some things can't change like for example: backstories, apperince, trama, race, relision ect but others you can add like for example a half human and half rabibit hybrid that is very sweet and kind, likes to enjoy nature while eatting candy with their friends, like that you can put as a head cannon because it doesn't do any harm unless the character in known for disliking sweet things, and also you can make up back stories of charaters IF they are not mentioned ONCE in the anime. Like Kokichi for example he is a charater from a game called Danganronpa V3 Killing Harmony and he is the fan favourite and the main antagonist of the game for his annoying and lying nature, like he inside the game didn't mention ONCE about his past to anyone and the only thing we know is ONE video inside the game that talks about his friends/family DICE which it only said that they were the people Kokichi cared for the most and that they were in some kind of danger, THATS IT so you could say he was an orphan or smt because it does say DICE was his friends and family or you could say that he had abusive parents so he counts DICE as his family. So yea that you can do BUT you can't just say "He was just using DICE as a way to have servants because hes wealthy" like sure if it was an AU but NOT a headcannon because it is proof inside the video in the game DICE is who Kokichi cared for the most. And also in most cases shipping is what I've seen that made lots of people just stright up quit and it isn't fair for those who atually like the content that person made. Like if it was like a very gross ship like a 15 year old and a 40 year old then yea, its gross but just ignore it, like you could of watched a video of a ship you liked in the time span you just commented a hate comment and it makes you uncorftable and makes them uncorftable and the other viewers who like the content. I swear some nerves of these people like I saw a video about an OC commtied S*ic*de and everyone was sad including me because I really like the charater and the comments were all like "R.I.P" and "I will miss the charater but there was this one discusting waste of a human who replied to everyone saying "Womp Womp" or "Oh nooo, Boo Hoo _____ Died sooo sad" which makes you relise that some peole out there are such discusting hearless humans who can't feel emotions and they expect to have no hate to what they do. Opps i kinda got off topic but the point I'm trying to make is that no matter the amount of effort you put in lots of videos, people will always hate and they won't listen to what you have to say so you should try for the fans not the haters and that some people will contine making stuff you can't change soooo yea head cannons suck when they arn't head canons so most people say its their AU for the fandom which is fine. I love what you were saying btw like I agree with you a lot in this stuff and that you had the patients to write a script for this video and to reply to the other comments by writing a paragragh and even though I'm not subscribed and i dont usally say this but Keep up the good work as I can tell you make your viewers happy so yea byeeeeeee.
