    Welcome to the
    Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
    0:00:03.000,0:00:05.500
    This video is an introduction
    to radiation therapy treatment
    0:00:05.500,0:00:07.300
to the head and neck area.
    0:00:07.300,0:00:09.500
We hope to give you a better idea
of what it will be like
    0:00:09.500,0:00:11.500
    to have radiation treatment
and explain some of the ways
    0:00:11.500,0:00:16.000
we can work together to help you
    get through your treatment successfully.
    0:00:18.500,0:00:21.500
    In the most general sense,
radiation is any sort of energy
    0:00:21.500,0:00:27.000
such as light, heat, or sound.
    0:00:28.500,0:00:32.000
    Ionizing radiation is a type
of radiation that can damage cells,
    0:00:32.000,0:00:35.500
such as ultraviolet light from the sun
    that can damage your skin,
    0:00:35.500,0:00:38.000
    causing sunburns.
    0:00:39.500,0:00:43.000
    For radiation therapy treatment
we use a high-energy beam of radiation
    0:00:43.000,0:00:48.500
that can penetrate through the body
and treat tissues under the skin.
    0:00:48.500,0:00:51.500
    Ionizing radiation affects all
of the tissues it passes through,
    0:00:51.500,0:00:56.000
but there are 3 main ways that it
    specifically targets cancer cells.
    0:00:56.000,0:00:01.500
First, cancer cells are more sensitive
to radiation damage than healthy cells.
    0:01:01.500,0:01:03.500
    Secondly, cancer cells
are less able than healthy cells
    0:01:03.500,0:01:06.000
    to repair the radiation damage.
    0:01:06.000,0:01:11.500
Third, we can focus the radiation beams
on the area we want to treat.
    0:01:11.500,0:01:14.000
In the next part of the video,
    we will show and describe
    0:01:14.000,0:01:18.000
some of the procedures you will have done
    to prepare for radiation treatment.
    0:01:18.500,0:01:22.000
    One of your first appointments
in this department is called CT simulation.
    0:01:22.000,0:01:27.500
This is a type of CT scan that is needed
to create your personal treatment plan.
    0:01:27.500,0:01:30.000
    At this appointment,
you will also have a molded mask made
    0:01:30.000,0:01:32.000
    that fits over your
    head and shoulders.
    0:01:32.000,0:01:35.500
The mask will help make your treatments
as quick and accurate as possible.
    0:01:35.500,0:01:39.000
It is normal to feel a bit anxious
    about this procedure.
    0:01:39.000,0:01:41.000
    It may help to know
that the mask does not hurt you
    0:01:41.000,0:01:44.000
    and you will be able
to breathe normally the entire time.
    0:01:44.000,0:01:48.500
The mask is a type of plastic that we soak
in a warm water bath to make it soft.
    0:01:48.500,0:01:51.000
    Then we shape it over
    your face, neck and shoulders,
    0:01:51.000,0:01:54.000
and clip it onto the treatment bed.
    0:01:54.000,0:01:58.000
    You can see here how
the mask looks when it is flat.
    0:01:58.500,0:02:03.000
And then after it has been shaped
to fit your head and neck.
    0:02:07.000,0:02:09.500
This is what it looks like
    when the mask is made.
    0:02:09.500,0:02:12.000
It goes over your face quickly
    and we help shape it
    0:02:12.000,0:02:14.000
around your nose, neck, and shoulders.
    0:02:14.000,0:02:17.000
You'll have your eyes and mouth
    closed for this step,
    0:02:17.000,0:02:20.000
only because there is a bit of water
    still on the mask.
    0:02:25.500,0:02:27.500
The mask is meant to be snug
    but should not hurt.
    0:02:27.500,0:02:31.000
You will be able to breathe
through the holes in the mask.
    0:02:31.000,0:02:33.500
    For your treatment appointments,
there will be holes in the mask
    0:02:33.500,0:02:36.000
in the area of your eyes, mouth and neck,
    0:02:36.000,0:02:39.000
    so it should be
    a little bit more comfortable.
    0:02:43.250,0:02:47.000
Once the mask is ready, we draw
some marks on it and take the CT scan.
    0:02:47.000,0:02:49.500
    At the very end,
we may talk to you about making
    0:02:49.500,0:02:53.000
    a permanent, freckle-sized
    tattoo on your chest.
    0:02:54.750,0:02:57.500
The marks on the mask and the tattoo
