    Just made one yesterday. Once I had the materials, it took about a half hour to cut, put together and install. Went out to the coop this morning and no more mess from the chickens kicking feed all over the place.

    Great design! Clean and efficient!
    I would suggest cutting a rectangular hole along the side of one of the pipes and then covering it with a piece of clear tubing, cut apropriately so that you may be able to check the amount of feed or water that is in the system.

    Your setup is really nice & thank you for showing us what you have done. I wanted to mention (in case you don't know) chickens love every scrap you have left from the table. They eat table scraps better than a dog, and we all know how much a dog loves table scraps. Boy does people food make chickens lay eggs. (meat included)

    Another thing, put a spoon of vinegar to each litre of water to prevent bacteria formation and also to prolong it's functionality during winter cold. it's lowering the liquids freezing point.

    I saw an awesome trick to show how much food is left. Drill a small hole in the top where you fill the food at. Place a wooden dowel inside it. The dowel will sit on top of the food and slowly sink as the food supply lowers. You can even paint the dowel at different levels, ie 3 days of food left.

    Your setup was so neat, I made the same thing for my chickens. Unfortunately living in Phoenix AZ, this system didn't work too well. After 1 week, I opened up the lid to add more food and found lots of mold growing. Pipe was the same length and angle of yours. I was so bummed! I did notice the young chickens (7 weeks old) were shying away from this feeder! No wonder! Moldy food - and when I disassembled it - wow - very bad smell. Maybe it was the food? The higher than normal humidity the past few weeks? Not sure. Just wanted others to be aware of my experience in the AZ climate.

      +Kim Ward for the first two years this feeder never got wet but as soon as the joints loosened up from me shaking it all around I also started getting moisture inside. Make sure you glue the fittings very well and also pit a screw in each joint. If you can, make the feeder pipe go straight into the feeder without the 45's that should do the trick!

    On the same principle I made automatic feeders for my rabbits which provided grains for three days but they weren't 100% reliable and I had to check for poop contamination every day and I found out they were eating too much and got fatter than I wanted them. Also, they were spilling the seeds by digging in with front arms so I wasn't happy how it worked and decided to tive feed them daily. I'd like to know if chickens are as greedy and did you notice they are getting too fat and what is the seed consumption from this semi automatic feeder compared to recomended manual feeding?
    Thanks for sharing. I will use this design. Good luck

      SSLFamilyDad Thanks! I actually have a mini-gravity feeder inside the coop right now because they are just getting weened off the heat lamp. I find though, that they stay in the coop longer in the morning when there is food in the coop! I'm curious to see if they come out right away in the morning if they dont have their food in with them during the night! Time will tell. Also, I built your waterer. Works great! They still haven't really figured it out, but I think they are a little short yet. They are about 8 weeks old. Ps. We are near Grand Rapids, MI.

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks, the feed doesn't really get stuck in the middle much. The chickens can reach in from the feed locations and peck at it which loosens it up enough to fall down. It has been working great and last about a week per fill with 6 chickens. Thanks for watching!!

    Hi! Thanks for the great video, will most definitely copy many ideas. I have just one question. Are you having any problems with other animals being attracted by the food? Aka mice, rats and so on? I have an extra large cage (around 160 sq feet) where I’ll probably set the coop, but the metal mesh is much larger than yours, so maybe that’s why I’ve had problems with unwanted intruders in the past. Is your coop always closed?

      It works best with the crumble you get at TSC or Family Farm and Home. I have been using this setup for 5 years and it is still working great. If it gets wet inside the tube the feed will stick. Normal operation, if food is stuck in the 45 degree tube just give it a quick shake and the food falls down into the bins.

    Currently building my own coop and it’s actually the same build plan as yours. I like your auto feeder and waterer you would by any chance have a parts list for those would you?

      +brian pruett unfortunately not, just the videos I did on them

      SSLFamilyDad fair enough I’m sure I can part things out from them...and come to think of it the plans I found are actually from the coop build video you did. Any advice I’m gonna start building mine in about 2 weeks

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The plans should lead you in the right direction and the video will show how things look through each step. As I mentioned in the coop update video I did the plans reflect the larger opening for the clean out tray and the nesting boxes are a couple inches higher than what I built so cleaning them out is easier. All of that is already changed the in the plans you have though so good luck! Let me know if you have questions and if you find any issues with the plans.

      SSLFamilyDad just one last question how many chickens will fit in the current plans you provided? I’m thinking about doubling the over all size of the plans and building the back wall the same as the right with the nesting boxes to accommodate more birds

      +brian pruett I have 9 in it right now with a bigger run. It was designed for 6 to be comfortable but can accommodate more for sure

    I made an automatic feeder AND auto Waterer with pvc using nipples rather than cups that require clean out. Mine never need cleaning.

    Great idea and one that I will be implementing this Spring. Couple of questions though. Do you have any problems with rodents, can they reach the feed at the height you have it set? I was thinking about maybe adding a pipe inside the feed part that is snug and with the same cutout but with a handle in the end so at night I could rotate it, thus shutting off access to the feed.

      Mark Ross That is a really cool idea for being able to shut it off. I can't say I have problems with rodents but I do know some birds have found there way in there in the morning before I let the chickens out. I don't mind though, we feed the birds anyway:) If a mouse or something wants to sneak in for some food, so be it, fat mice make for better lunch for my cats:) Thanks for checking it out!

    Did you have a problem with rain getting in the feeder ends?

    No disrespect meant but without making the capped end just a pop-off type that looks like an open invitation for critters.

    Doesn't the food get rain in it on a windy, rainy day? It seems like the feeding holes are only a few inches from the outside edge.

      not really it is tucked under there pretty good and if it gets wet they will eat it anyway. We never had any issues though in 2 years with this feeder

    I've never seen those drainage pipes for sale before. Is that something you would find at Home Depot and Menards?

      I almost spent the extra money on the schedule 40 stuff until I found these - Yes they are at Home Depot, link below, thanks for watching!

      Awesome. I'm going to look into that, for sure. For my aquaponics stuff. (I don't have any chickens at the moment) Maybe in the future. Looks like fun. Thank you

    Have you found that rain tracks down your auto feeder and gets into the feed a all ?

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Corey Landrey nope, I have a cap on the feed supply tube and the rest is under the nesting boxes and coop so it stays nice and dry.
