I hardly feel empowered to say anything else after I was so mean to atheists but the whole issue with 'God' (it occurs to me) is to do with 'truth' and 'belief' which presumably, bears fruit in the form of 'faith'. Taking the conceptual meaning of the word 'God' I ask how old could such a concept be? My answer is, that any creature with a brain and two eyes would, upon considering his circumstances, conclude that 'something bigger than myself' caused all this. That 'something bigger' was (and still is) understood to be 'God' and it could be a very ancient idea indeed. Other than that when you say the word 'God' you have to be clear what you mean. Different audiences may have a different understanding of what you are saying. For Christians it is Jesus, for Jews it is Yahweh, for Muslims it is Allah. The free form concept I outline above is not included. Hence 'The Trinity' is (in my view) a remedy, that takes account of the various different approaches it is possible to take when contemplating 'God'. It is complicated but at the same time a 'Triune God' makes it difficult for a particular religious group to claim an exclusive monopoly on the truth. In a world torn by religious strife this is helping to keep the peace.
If a god existed then science is our best way of discovering it. That said, science hasn't shown one bit of factual evidence to support the claim that a god exists.
Thanks for your comment Darryl. You might want to check out The Reason for God by Tim Keller. He outlines some of the evidence for the existence of God.
