    It's gettin' more and more archaic. Slowly cranking and squeezing the crackling oak into its new shape the egyptian way using levers and comealongs to convince it to give in and become Arabella is very entertaining. Thanks for sharing!

    It's starting to look like a "plank" Hahahahahaha. Fellas, it's starting to look like a BOAT! This is precision boat building. No "close enough" here. I love watching all of you regardless of your methods or materials you are creating something beautiful and useful. Something that will show your true devotion to perfection and skill for years to come.

    Good to see Thad using a proper pencil and sharpened with his pen knife. I noticed it was a Lee Valley green rubber tipped pencil . I used to work for the Cumberland Pencil Company in the UK. We made lots and lots of pencils for Lee Valley. So in a peculiar way I now feel connected to Arabella.

    I haven't missed an episode and yet I'm amazed at the thickness of the planks. If you'd asked me I would have presumed that they would be half as thick as they are. Everything in this build has been consistently over the top. I'm beginning to see why it has been worth it when Steve said that these first planks 'should be' the same on both sides!

  • @nic_the_aged_woodworker

    Thad's quiet confidence was quiet powerful, here's a man who has absolute confidence in what he's doing and he's passing on skills that very few have, fabulous guy.
    Another major step, a plank on Arabella!
    Your craftsmanship is inspiring, I hope more folk see what you're doing and start their own project, it could be a boat or flower boxes. It doesn't matter just as long as someone is inspired to do something.
    As ever, thanks for sharing your life with us and keep making great videos!

    I assumed you guys used to build ships for a living like Larry Pardey, but just read that you're a photographer and a teacher. Building a wooden boat with that level of class and professionalism? It's inspirational.

  • @KJParadise
    @KJParadise 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    I've been watching religiously since the lead keel weight was poured. This step feels like the first step on the downhill side of the project. The garboard plank seems like an incredibly difficult step because its such a huge piece of wood, and has to be cut so perfectly. You can't un-cut a board that big if you make a mistake. I think that it's at this stage that I would have a real problem of being frozen in indecision. I think the main load that Thad shouldered was giving the boys confidence that they were doing the right thing.

    Learning all kinds of clamping techniques and cutting strategies. It’s like seeing how the magic is done with planking. I always wondered how it was possible. Now I know how and wonder how anyone can be that ambitious and patient? You guys obviously have what it takes. Great that you have such a skilled and accessible mentor too! There’s always a calming confidence in watching a quiet old guy who knows what he’s doing.
