Something so fantastic about this...I am a Christian, but was blessed with a tallit a couple years ago. It quickly became one of my most prized possessions...like sensing the arms of the Almighty embrace me as I pray. Seeing them being hand-made...like a part of the craftsman going into each one. Splendid.
Love the talitot! How long does it take to make a single one,and what type of thread do you use, only wool,or silk and other kinds of material? Please comment on the different colors and the tribes of Israel's individual representation in those colors... What kind of blue thread/dye do you use for the tzitzit? Is it common to use wool thread for them? Can any other kind of earth derived material such as cotton be used ,or is this to close to the concept of putting earthy linen next to priestly wool ? Would a Tallit ever be made of earth derived material?
The preferable color of the threads of “Tzitzit” is “techeilet,” obtained from a dye extracted from an aquatic creature called the “chilazon,” the identity of which has long been a subject of controversy, but it is said that it can be found in the “Yam HaMelach,” the Sea of Salt.
(Deuteronomy 22:11) prohibits combining linen and wool in the same garment -the combination is called shatnez. Almost all commercially available tzitzit strings are made from wool, so avoid making the body of the tallit with any materials that contain linen.
The color of the dye for Tzitzit is an aquamarine (blue-green) color about which the Gemara in Menachot 43b says, “What is the difference between ‘techeilet’ and all other colors? The special quality of ‘techeilet’ is that it resembles the sea, and the sea resembles the sky, and the sky resembles the Throne of Glory…” Some individuals have begun to use “techeilet,” derived from their version of what the “chilazon” is, but white is also acceptable as a color of “Tzitzit.”
Thank you. And would there be different colours of Talitot for various tribes? Levite, Cohen, etc. A talit with burgundy? I know black is popular for general passionate Jewry....
@@ingridpear1882 the colours of a tallit is based on personal preference, white and black is traditional. Sephardic tallits are usually all white. White and blue is also common for ashkenazis. Secular Jews will usually have more colourful tallitot
