    I just started making mugs but have been intimated by the handles. This is so incredibly helpful, thank you so much!!

      I am in Ceramics I at ASUB. My first handles we coil built. I was really not happy with the way they looked even though they were functional. Now thanks to your video I have other methods to try. Keep the videos coming.

    I’m brand new to pottery! I enjoyed this video. I’ll be making my first handle this week to put on my first mug. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!

    I make handles by making a coil, then using the piece of wood that I use for gauging thickness to get the handles straight. Finally I sometimes use a thin wooden stick - the kind you make kebabs on - and push it into the clay to make a line detail down the handle.

    Excellent video. I have not tried throwing a thick cylinder and cutting it into rings for handles, but it is yet another way!

  • @neodavinci9770
    @neodavinci9770 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I like throwing my handles. I throw a slightly thicker cylinder, then I section off the cylinder and form the different sections (give one ridges, one is curved, one has two bands, etc). Then I use a needle to cut off each handle, trim it to length, and lay it in shape to dry

    I was taught to pull handles from the mug! So basically the same as your pulling method, except score and slip the clay onto the mug first and then begin pulling!

    I've even watched a potter that attached clay to the top portion of the mug and then pulled the handle. I make handles by the coil method. I've got to try the clay tool next time. Cheers!

    Thank goodness for your video! I’m new to pottery and winging it as I go :) now I can do the handle the right way on my first ever slab cup or cup of any kind for that matter. I was scoring the cut end of my handle 😂 and wondering why it didn’t seem stable. Handle number 5 is gonna be the one that sticks lol 👍🏻 thanks loads, love your demos.

    I have only worked by pulling the handles so far... (I’ve made exactly three) They have a nice look to them that way and rolling seemed harder! But pulling a smaller handle seems difficult so maybe I’ll try to roll a slab and cut it!
    Your videos are so well done. Thanks from a newly obsessed potter!

  • @benpatterson4452
    @benpatterson4452 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I pull all my handles, because I like the slightly more organic, natural look this affords. I also like that you can taper the handle tbis way, which you can't do, with extruded handles.
    With that said, I know some production potters, who swear by extruded handles, both due to the consistency, speed of creation, and allegedly superior strength.(The clay and clay partucles are being compressed, during their production, as opposed to being stretched with a pulled handle.)

    I like pulled handles a lot, but don't do them that often because I feel like I'm not that good at making them, tho I suppose that's why I should be pulling handles more often. Usually I'll do slab handles and smooth the edges with a gentle pulling. I bought a handle cutting ribbon tool, but don't care for it much, I have a hard time using consistent pressure while running the tool thru the clay and I end up with thin and thick spots.

    Pull or extrude- gives me the most consistent handles. Of the two I pull most often.

    Thanks again for a great informative video. I pull all my handles. I recently got an extruder and havent installed it yet. I am trying to decide to mount it on a table or the wall, I am moving soon and thinki g a table would be better. I built a big heavy table and that would work, but I am not sure if a table mount works well or not because I haave never seen one used other than on a wall. Or I could just wait until I move. Iove your videos. Thanks.

    I have glass vase that I've painted with acrylic paint - can I use Sculpey Air Dry Model Clay to create handles for those vases (and will they mount? If so, how do I "mount" them onto the vase? (Clay on acrylic/glass). Your works are beautiful

    I pull and slab mine ... never done it with a tool and no extruder ... great video though
    I never turn while pulling ... they seem pretty even all round though, love indenting it with my thumb

  • @marynelson4477

    I pull all my handles and once in a great while I use a slab. I don’t feel like the Clay is lined up properly when you just cut it from a block of clay. I think the extruder would be nice - maybe I’ll get one this year. I’ve been a powder for 25 years without one but you never know…🤔😀

    Very cool indeed.
    But can I add a new handle to a broken mug?
    I have a mug with a photo of me and a buddy from an amusement park roller coaster back in in 98.....the handle broke about ten years ago and just recently I rediscovered it in the back of my my cupboard. My buddy passed away in 2020 way too young and I'd love to know if I can take this mug to a potter to have a new handle fitted?

    • @CharlyHamlynCeramics
      @CharlyHamlynCeramics 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not to have it useable as a mug safely, you could possibly create a handle and glaze it then glue it on but this would not be safe to use and very hard to get it just the right size due to shrinkage etc. I'd tidy the break, to remove any sharp bits - it will probably need filing/sanding. Then your mum can safely use it as a pen pot, toothbrush pot, or general beaker.

      I don't know about Jon, but I wait 1-2 days. If it's ready for trimming, it's ready for a handle. I shape my handles and let them dry for a couple of hours. Firm, still flexible.

      @hollypick7773 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      If you don’t like him then don’t watch him. Would you ever go up to someone and say your face is goofy in person? No. Don’t hide behind the screen. It’s bad manners no matter how you say it.

    • @56Linnea
      @56Linnea 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought it would be helpful for him to know it comes off as unprofessional. I did not say HE was goofy. I did not say his FACE was goofy. I SAID he was using goofy EXPRESSIONS. There's a big difference.

    • @hollypick7773

      Seriously? Thats rude Linnea and very judgmental. His playfulness and "goofy expressions" are what I enjoy the most about his videos. Why does he have to appear professional? He isnt a banker. And I dont see any videos on your channel so you arent really one to judge are you? Dont watch if you dont like. Jeesh!
