Tech, are you aware of the situation regarding Melee player Fortune taking his own life back in 2022? I think the Smash Communities' tendency to define players forever by their greatest mistake is one of its worst attributes. I hate that nobody with influence in the scene has even started a discussion about what happened to Fortune for playing the game in a way they didn't like. No one wants to acknowledge what happened, (I've seen a disturbing number of people celebrate what Fortune did and turn it into a meme) No one wants to prevent behavior like this and they continue to damn players for life if their mistake is great enough. There are disturbing parallels to Haxs' situation right now as he, too, has been defined for life by the community for his youtube video. I don't want Hax to do what Fortune did, but if it comes to that, is the melee community going to dodge the conversation of forgiveness yet again? Unfortunately I have to say yes.

I don’t get it. There are better players. Leffen has never been #1 in the world, he plays the most over played character and personally I think his super optimal play style is very boring to watch. Other players such as hax play quite similar. He could quit forever and it wouldnt leave a void. I tried my best to give him benefit of the doubt about stuff until I actually had my first interaction with him when he first started getting into traditional fighters. I came to stream and told him it was inspiring to see a figurehead/player from the smash community take up playing fighting games and "maybe ya girl could too." He called me an attention-seeking bitch because I pointed out I was a girl. This from the guy that was a !hero from the women-empowering MeToo movement. He has "nice guy" syndrome and a lot of the communities he has tried to stay on the good side of are just getting progressively more tired of his bullshit.
I bought a Summit poster signed by the top melee players and it was costly. Armada, Mang0, Leffen, HBOX, etc. I asked Leffen on stream that if I sent it to him, if he could also put a small note on it. If he agrees? Super cool, he was my favorite to watch. If he said sorry man, he’s busy, alright, I’ll understand. Leffen said “what’s in it for me?” And that’s what bummed me out from him. I then asked Armada the same thing and he said sure with no issues. I sent it to him long distance. Sadly, I never did get the note due to the long shipping timeframe, him forgetting why he got it, myself forgetting about following up consistently, and a slow back and forth in private over a few months. That was a fail but at least Armada tried. Leffen was an immediate shutdown lol. Btw, I don’t remember what the sig was but all their signatures were pretty rough but Leffen was lazy as hell.

Something I've noticed is extremely common in the twitter discourse on all this is that people love to try to discredit the people that disagree with them in whatever way they can, whether logical or not, rather than argue on any actual points, or evidence. The amount of times in those threads I've seen some random (or Leffen, for that matter), be like "oh this guy fucks with tech/zero/ee" or anyone else the community has vilified as some kind of trump card "i win, you lose" type bullshit is astounding.
Yeah sadly that is pretty common in internet discourse in general, people get tribal and just spam buzzwords these days, actually logic and critical thinking is hard to come by.

The issue with this whole situation is that leffen will face no repercussions. The people part of the community that leffen needs to be held accountable by, are just as guilty of the same stuff he is and enabling it to happen for so long. If the people in the melee community responsible for disciplinary action act the same way as the people deserving of their discipline, then things are clearly not handled with equal expectation of behaviour from people within the community, depending on how well liked they are/their stature in the community. Which opens up room for injustices to happen based off bias in the community like what’s happened to hax.

Also, I have to say it, but I have been around in the online portion of the smash scene for a while now. I crawled all over smashboards and witnessed a lot of dumbass drama that nowadays would make people's headspin that back then people just brushed off and forgot about. And you'd be surprised how much of that involves current heads in the scene who have a stake in maintaining the reins of this sinking ship. But even after all of that, what is being done to Hax is still among the most wild things I think I have witnessed in the smash scene. The smash scene has genuinely taken everything away from this man, dehumanized him and treated him like he is some kind of wild animal (that they ironically themselves cornered) and are all surprised that his mental health has spiraled. It is insane to me. They drove him to this and are now playing victims like "oh well we can't have him around, he could be a danger to people at events". Or the even worse fake supporter types who are disguising their own discomfort and intolerance of Hax as "just having his best interests in mind". These people genuinely run around on every social media platform saying "what's best for Hax right now is to seek help and get away from Melee altogether", when in reality what they really mean to say is "I am not personally comfortable with Hax being in the scene and my personal feelings matter more". That's what they really mean, and y'know what that ironically is? BEING BIGOTED. You couldn't write a more insane clown show than the modern smash scene and how it has treated Hax, I swear.
I don't know if bigoted is the right word, but that's the crazy part. Anytime something crazy happens within the community, there once was the curious question of "Oh no, how could this have happened?" Then you look into the community's behaviour and the answer becomes clear: The community is the primary cause to a lot of their woes. When a lot of allegations came out, at first, it was a complete shook, but the more you look into how things were run, you start to realise that a lot of this behaviour was cultivated by the community itself simply because they refused to grow up. Like...underage drinking isn't a problem because "haven't y'all been to high school before"...until people decide to have drunk sex. Age doesn't matter because we're all smashers and we just love the game...until minors are sleeping with adults. "Fuck Nintendo, we're fine without them, especially once they kept away from us"...until money and developer/publisher support is desperately needed, but also, what's professionalism? Now, I'm sure there are a lot of good in the community, and this does not excuse the behaviour of (mostly) those excommunicado, but once you realise they came from a community full of kids and grown adults still living in high school or the degen life, you start to understand why these things happened, and it's why some lean to forgiveness instead of ostracizing them and then some. It's even more strange when those doing the ostracizing tend to be just as guilty.

I don’t get it. There are better players. Leffen has never been #1 in the world, he plays the most over played character and personally I think his super optimal play style is very boring to watch. I tried my best to give him benefit of the doubt about stuff until I actually had my first interaction with him when he first started getting into traditional fighters. I came to stream and told him it was inspiring to see a figurehead/player from the smash community take up playing fighting games and "maybe ya girl could too." He called me an attention-seeking bitch because I pointed out I was a girl. This from the guy that was a !hero from the women-empowering MeToo movement. He has "nice guy" syndrome and a lot of the communities he has tried to stay on the good side of are just getting progressively more tired of his bullshit.

I bought a Summit poster signed by the top melee players and it was costly. Armada, Mang0, Leffen, HBOX, etc.
I asked Leffen on stream that if I sent it to him, if he could also put a small note on it. If he agrees? Super cool, he was my favorite to watch. If he said sorry man, he’s busy, alright, I’ll understand.
Leffen said “what’s in it for me?” And that’s what bummed me out from him.
I then asked Armada the same thing and he said sure with no issues. I sent it to him long distance. Sadly, I never did get the note due to the long shipping timeframe, him forgetting why he got it, myself forgetting about following up consistently, and a slow back and forth in private over a few months. That was a fail but at least Armada tried.
Leffen was an immediate shutdown lol. Btw, I don’t remember what the sig was but all their signatures were pretty rough but Leffen was lazy as hell.

The issue with this whole situation is that leffen will face no repercussions. The people part of the community that leffen needs to be held accountable by, are just as guilty of the same stuff he is and enabling it to happen for so long. If the people in the melee community responsible for disciplinary action act the same way as the people deserving of their discipline, then things are clearly not handled with equal expectation of behaviour from people within the community, depending on how well liked they are/their stature in the community. Also, I have to say it, but I have been around in the online portion of the smash scene for a while now. I crawled all over smashboards and witnessed a lot of dumbass drama that nowadays would make people's headspin that back then people just brushed off and forgot about. And you'd be surprised how much of that involves current heads in the scene who have a stake in maintaining the reins of this sinking ship. But even after all of that, what is being done to Hax is still among the most wild things I think I have witnessed in the smash scene. The smash scene has genuinely taken everything away from this man, dehumanized him and treated him like he is some kind of wild animal (that they ironically themselves cornered) and are all surprised that his mental health has spiraled. It is insane to me. They drove him to this and are now playing victims like "oh well we can't have him around, he could be a danger to people at events". Or the even worse fake supporter types who are disguising their own discomfort and intolerance of Hax as "just having his best interests in mind". These people genuinely run around on every social media platform saying "what's best for Hax right now is to seek help and get away from Melee altogether", when in reality what they really mean to say is "I am not personally comfortable with Hax being in the scene and my personal feelings matter more". That's what they really mean, and y'know what that ironically is? BEING BIGOTED. You couldn't write a more insane clown show than the modern smash scene and how it has treated Hax, I swear.
I don't know if bigoted is the right word, but that's the crazy part. Anytime something crazy happens within the community, there once was the curious question of "Oh no, how could this have happened?" Then you look into the community's behaviour and the answer becomes clear: The community is the primary cause to a lot of their woes. When a lot of allegations came out, at first, it was a complete shook, but the more you look into how things were run, you start to realise that a lot of this behaviour was cultivated by the community itself simply because they refused to grow up. Like...underage drinking isn't a problem because "haven't y'all been to high school before"...until people decide to have drunk sex. Age doesn't matter because we're all smashers and we just love the game...until minors are sleeping with adults. "Fuck Nintendo, we're fine without them, especially once they kept away from us"...until money and developer/publisher support is desperately needed, but also, what's professionalism?
Now, I'm sure there are a lot of good in the community, and this does not excuse the behaviour of (mostly) those excommunicado, but once you realise they came from a community full of kids and grown adults still living in high school or the degen life, you start to understand why these things happened, and it's why some lean to forgiveness instead of ostracizing them and then some. It's even more strange when those doing the ostracizing tend to be just as guilty.
