Tortilla Flat is most commonly driven by local enthusiasts late at night. The views are excellent during the day, but the traffic is much better at night.
I drove it around 11am in a gladiator and it wasn’t too bad. I made it all the way to the monument by sundown even taking some trials and stopping at the bar for lunch
This episode is the perfect example of what the s2000 does for a driver. It makes every road enjoyable and makes you want to actually DRIVE the car all the time. It can’t be explained and just needs to be experienced. Not the best road trip car ergonomics wise. But makes the road enjoyable no matter what.
this is why I’m a car guy but an environmentalist of sorts. if we don’t take care of earth than our blessings can’t be passed down to the next gen like beautiful areas to explore and more. wish we can do better as humans soon before it’s late
100% the first thing I look forward to every Saturday morning. I really appreciate all the work y'all put into this, staying true to the channel, and taking us along with. Last week's video was the catalyst to finally commiting to taking a trip to Tail of the Dragon this year (weekday of course). Stay safe, and enjoy the ride!
These road trip films are nothing short of inspiring. As an older car guy, you guys have managed to really rejuvenate the car TH-cam world. For this I’m sure we are all super thankful. Keep it going. Come spring I think I’m going to take my c63s on a road trip :)
29:3129:53 30:1030:50 this scene shows you the connection between a man and its car, its like they're combining as one. The vibration, the noise, like the car is talking to you. that's why some people don't like EV, because what Ben felt during that time was hard to replicate using an EV
So shocked you guys didn’t drive on Bay Area roads such as Skyline Blvd from Pacifica to Saratoga and Highway 9. And from Woodside’s famous Alice’s restaurant through La Honda towards highway 1 next to the coast. Technicality and fun 9/10. Views driving along coast 9.5/10. Would want to see what you guys think of these roads on the next long trip!
I was looking forward to these guys reviewing the roads you mentioned! Maybe a stop at alices. Wouldve been a fantastic addition to the west coast segment
Being from the area, I was also hoping it would make an appearance. But I feel like skyline,9 and Alice’s are a Bay Area thing. I don’t see too much recognition from non locals imo.
The Apache Trail is the best road in the States hands down. I've been to 31 states, and was lucky to at one point live 20 minutes from that road while I was riding motorcycles. That road makes you feel so small and insignificant while also being an absolute blast when there is nobody on it. It is fun but can be punishing, and a few turns are straight up dangerous (turn by the lake before the first 1 way bridge). In a digital world, it's a place that makes you feel human
Apache trail looked pretty cool, I think the reason Ben liked it more is because of the car, its way more raw than the type r and probably feels like youre at the track more sorta speaking.
Watching you guys turn into giggling little boys on that last road BROUGHT A TEAR TO THIS OLD MANS EYE....DAMN THAT LOOKED SO FUN....YOU GUYS ARE PURE CLASS 👍...KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
My wife and I took a 2 week, 2,000 mile road trip to 5 state parks on the west coast. We rented a hatchback, but they were sold out, so we got a 2018 mustang GT convertible in red as a free upgrade… Big Sur, to Death Valley, to Sequoia and all around. Was the best trip of our life. The car makes the trip.
I’m from Phoenix. Born and raised. Tortilla flats is the local favorite here. Sometimes it’s hard to decide when to go out there lol. Yeah you get stunning views during the day that never get old but as you guys saw… TRAFFIC. Night time is best for spirited driving however you do have to be careful. Some people go out and try driving past their own limits and crash or go off the road often. That being said I do agree that a lower horsepower, more analog car is the way to go there. I 1000% prefer my stock power E46 M3 over my old 600whp M235i with electric p/s..
Next time you guys visit, try out Highway 89A! Start in Yarnell, AZ and finish in Flagstaff, AZ (or vice versa). This is another fun road with tons of twists, banked turns, hair pins etc etc. It offers a chance to take a break in both Prescott, AZ and Jerome, AZ which is a famous haunted town on a hillside with good food, bars, local shopping and amazing views. You may run into the same problems with traffic during the day in some sections especially on the weekends but it’s a very nice day trip for sure.
@@dannyruiz4221 they also need to drive Catalina highway in Tucson! It's such a good road and just like Tortilla Flats where you have to go up there early in the morning or at night. I'll run my motorcycle up there when it's not cold and it's just such a fun blast to use all 50hp of it lol
As an Arizona native Tortilla flats is a road you have to drive early in the morning or at night if you want to drive spiritily. I use to run it every weekend with a togue group that was pretty active of the time. You can definitely go fast and what you drive 100% affects the driving experience. Tortilla flats is perfect for light weight N/A cars like Ben’s s2000!
I've loved all your road trip videos and rewatch them all the time. I know these must take a huge amount of time and effort, but there's no doubt these series are some of the best car content on TH-cam!
Apache Trail is driven by the cool kids late at night. I lived in Tempe for 10 years. Most people call it a canyon run. Mostly Hondas. But they definitely drove very quickly.
Ben always ends up in comfortable new cars, while Ben always has a borderline racecar that's trying to give him permenant spine injuries. Loving the trip y'all, hope to see my hometown road on your way back.
As someone who's lived in Colorado for 20 years and the last 8 in Arizona I couldn't be more happy you highlighted Pikes peak, CO and drove Apache trail, AZ. This means that our automotive enthusiast residents in both states have kept our honey hole spots a secret and we can continue to not have traffic or police harassing us. For the record we don't have any hours long, highly maintained, super banked roads, & without traffic or police anywhere near Denver or Phoenix so don't ask. BUT if you know somebody who knows somebody and you're not a youtuber we might be able to help.
@@AnthonyGalloni I admire your lifestyle... I'm also born and raised in California but I currently live in Tokyo and I doubt I'll ever find something as scenic over here in Japan.
These road trip series are what got me to subscribe originally, and are some of my favorite on the channel. I’m glad you all keep doing them. They are inspiring.
As someone who grew up in LA you are a few miles away from Decor Canyon a road not many drive and hard to drive fast we laped that road as kids all night.
Shocked at completely missing Alice's Restaurant, Hwy84 La Honda Road from Alice's to the ocean, Hwy9 (dubbed 9burgring by locals), visiting Skidpad... shocked I say.
You guys just created another lane for yourself. Traveling across the country where car folks can drive their cars. Keep it up. This can be a thing for a long time
I’ve had the pleasure of riding Yerba Buena on my road bike and descending it on a bike is just as enjoyable. It’s great to see a car enjoy it just as much as I did on my road bike !
I just came back from my own road trip to tail of the dragon solo from nj. Was one of my best experiences in a while. Thank you guys for the inspiration! I’ll have to plan another one soon
I escaped California a few years ago and don't regret it. But I have driven the Canyon roads and the PCH in my 20's with a Rotary powered car. They were the best drives of my life! I DO miss those roads. I do NOT miss LA and the 405!
It’s crazy that I know that rest area you guys are stopped at in the end of the video. It’s in my little neck of the woods in NorCal! I’d recognize those almond orchards any day. Crazy yall were around here! Can’t wait to see the rest of the trip!
If you guys are still on the trip and need another cool road in cali I would recommend del Puerto canyon rd. It takes you 30 miles from the Modesto-Paterson area through the mountains and theres a split that can either take you to San Jose or to Livermore. It’s got a ton of tight turns and it’s amazing in the winter.
I love how they entirely glossed over the fact that Apache Trail's asphalt comes to an end about 50 feet past the pull off where they parked for the recap before turning into 22 miles of unpaved road. Not that it changes the road they'd been riding but a riding road being to that point, but I think it's notable when you're talking about great driving roads that it has to be run as an out and back rather than potentially linking it together with other great roads in the area.
Y'all should hit up Georgia and hit Blood Mountain/Wolfpen Gap in Dahlonega/Helen. Tight, windy corners, plenty of camber, enthusiast roads to the max. Easily rivals the Dragon in terms of difficulty and experience. Will warn in the winter, the roads tend to ice up, and if you're not careful the GPS can easily route you down a dirt road. But these roads are MEAN mean, whole bunch of fun!
Tortilla Flats and MT Lemmon are roads you’d want to do at night or early evening to avoid the traffic. Both can be clear super early in the morning too.
Also wanted to put The Pig Trail scenic byway on the list of potential roads to drive. Arkansas is a bit of a hidden gem for driving. There are hundreds of miles of great driving roads in that area that rarely have bad traffic.
In Arizona the drive from Congress to Prescott (89) and from Clifton to Alpine (191) and even the old Oatman highway are super fun in a car that likes to change direction
Type R Ben needs to come back and take a ride with me on Tortilla at a proper pace. Especially the section from the lake heading out towards town. This is one of the best driving roads in Arizona and very popular because it's close to town. The Enthusiasts run this road at night when the traffic is almost zero. Next time you guys come through you should try the 89/89A through Yarnell, Prescott and Jerome.
Hey guys. Great videos. Well done. I would 100% recommend HWY1 north of Golden Gate Bridge to Stinson Beach. I ride that road vertically every Sunday morning for 2 years (part of the Sunday morning ride). Views, corners, everything you could want. But, need to do it early due to tourist traffic.
Tortilla flat HAS to be revisited but at a good time. Late night. Weekdays are good, weekends if you want to see other drivers. I ride there often, as evidenced by my profile pic haha.

NEXT ROAD-TRIP: Start with $1,000 cars, trade your way up for better cars across the country. Best car wins.
They should trade up in every state, that would be a nice challenge
I think they’d trade their way into cars that blow up 😂
This would cool to watch 😂
I'd end up with a skateboard by the end of the trip 😂
Mount Washington New Hampshire🤷♂️
Tortilla flats is a night driving road. The enthusiast live that road in touge spirit when there is zero traffic then you run the road
Yep, was there last night around 10pm, pretty much zero traffic. Although I was the only one out there actually running the road which was surprising.
East Vally locals meet up tonight? lmao I’ll head out there about 10-11
Same thing in Tucson with the Catalina highway up Mt Lemmon.
At dawn or dusk all the bikes go up there for spirited riding and it's great!
