SS Decontrol, DYS,.Negative FX, last rites, Gang Green, Jerry's kids, Siege. Slapshot. Boston probably had the fiercest scene nationally during the golden age of 80-86
Siege were from Weymouth not Boston and were never considered to be part of the Boston scene. They mostly played Western Mass gigs along with a few gigs in CT and RI.
None of those bands could hold a candle to Sheer Terror, Breakdown, Neglect, AF, Cro-mags, Nihilistics, Iron Youth, Head On, SOD, Nausea, Carnivore, Crumbsuckers, Youth Defense League, Disciplinary Action, and Raw Deal.
@@johnstag2030 as much as I love them NY bands you listed even tho you forgot lifes blood and Burden of Proof then boston bands Ian listed are just as good.
Some of the songs on the actual Quarrel demo (sometimes titled before the quarrel) are some of the best versions of those songs. World Peace is one of them for sure. I think someone made a video of that actual recording on TH-cam somewhere.
A serious masterpiece....Even after hundreds of listens "Get It Away" continues to blow my mind. The WAY heavy yet strangely melodic guitar tone of Al Barile, Springa's manic, from the gut vocal performance (just listen closely to 2nd half of the title track), superb drumming (man the early 80's Boston h/c scene had the most kickass collection of drummers, just think about the drumming in bands like SSD, The F.U.'s, Jerry's Kids, Gang Green, Negative FX, The Proletariat, Youth Korps '82, and later, regional madmen like Siege), and absolutely wicked song arrangements (just check out the rad tempo changes in "Under The Influence" or the push/pull power dynamics of "Forced Down", for example), all add up to a flawless and undeniably brilliant piece of American hardcore. One question that I've had over the past decade or so is why in this time of seeming constant re-releases of everything under the sun, is why Taang! still only offers the old, rather poorly assembled SSD-"Power" 2LP/CD collection. It's a essential release for those who don't have access to the orig. SSD records but a band of such historical and musical like SSD deserves to have EACH of their releases put out individually (like Taang! did recently with the 3 F.U.'s LPs). At least if you own the SSD-"Power" collection you have all the "Get It Away" tracks but "Kids Will Have Their Say" has never been officially reissued on CD. What a great excuse to have the orig. artwork and throw on some bonus material! Come on Taang!!!!
I remember buying this lp for $5 off the neighborhood skin. He knew i was straight edge and he probably needed some pot money. I think it was the best $5 i coulda spent. Although at first listen, i didnt quite get it. It was so different than anything i had...way different than the Nardcore and LA shit i had lots of cuz im an 805 kid. But when it clicked, it was in regular rotation much to my parents dismay. This was 1988...so it was already "rare" and none of my pals had any SSD. Its one of my prized records today. Epic...just a brutal punch in the face...boston style
I have hesrd so offten that guys playing blast beats in death metal bands are most talented drummers because ig takes a lot of skill to play blast beats ???? a good drummer in a punk/ hardcore band can put a band over the top I've always appreciated a good drummer I like to hear drums I hate blast beats it maybe hard to play I don't play drums but blast beats seem like they would be exhausting to play but to say that style represents a very talented drummer ?? I don't know but it sounds like shit it was a cool differnt style when used periodically by early 80s punk hardcore bands ( who probably invented it although DEATH is credited for creating blast beats thrre were bands doing it before that i think??) but for blastbeats to become a drum style to define a genre of music ( deathmetal) for 30 years now ,is more amazing than the blast beats themselves, to me and my untrained ears theyre all playing the same thing on the drums on almost every song and for 30 years ??? but dude in SSD is fuckin tearing it up for sure !
I seriously had not listen to these songs since 1986. They sound ok definitely different than what defines a Hardcore band today. I think it separates itself from the pack. Good or bad
Al Barile, This record really influence and shaped the hardcore sound to come. You guys influenced all these other hardcore and straight edge hardcore bands coming up..period! I think it is easy for the player or players in a band to down play there work because I think they were involved and being in that position doesn't give you the chance to be removed when you listen to the record like a fan would. Truth be told, these records really need to be re-released and celebrated for there contribution to Boston hardcore, straight edge and the SSD D.I.Y work ethic. You guys did indeed created a powerful stand alone record, the chemistry between players on this record is incredible not to mention the powerful messages in the lyrics. I will take this over any new hardcore any day. This is unmatched!
Al Barile This album is simply amazing. It is a hardcore masterpiece. Honestly, it should be in the Library of Congress. It has been so influential on so many other bands.
It's definitely one of the best hardcore releases of the 1980's, imo. It was different, powerful, and kept with the hardcore style while not sounding necessarily traditionally hardcore (for the time) with fast 1-2 beats. I loved it then, and still love it today. You came up with some great new ideas and music for this one. But 'How We Rock'...not sure what was going on there. lol
this album is incredible, I remember hearing get it away and hearing the vocal's and distinctly thinking "This is where a lot of hardcore bands from here in seattle like lower species and instant and bands like breakdown got their vocal sounds" incredible album with an incredible influence
I remember when I got this album a little late in the game but I bought the album in a used record store for $4.99 should have been $25 and all my friends were trying to grab it off me I was like no f****** way

A lot of people seem to miss the point of straight edge/hardline, at least in its original form. It wasn't an excuse to act like a fascist and beat people up or tell people how to live. It was a way of getting the point across that to be punk did not have to be about relentless self destruction for its own sake. That's what the rest of society does every weekend, just less dramatically. If you want to be different - do something positive with your life - work your ass off, go to school, and help people. Some people only understood violence and just needed a swift kick in the ass to start going in the right direction.
+E T Hardline originally was just a more aggressive straightedge. Before the Vegan Reich crazy shit it was just people more willing to look out for the younger dudes being pressured to get fucked up and destroy their lives in the scene. "Puss"
Al Barile, TH-cam has been a effective means to be able to hear great out of print punk/hardcore such as the Xclaim catalog. However, I'm old school and I like to hold a record or cd in my hand while I listen to the music. You have to understand that you guys influenced and inspired so many people and that is why we are all chomping at the bit to own an original copy or for there to be a official re-release. Important stuff Al.
+Scott Kunz From DIY perspective, there is no more need to print anything really. Even turntables do not require records. Pretty soon we will just be 3D printing vinyls.
You really have no idea how bad the old fucks AND the kids want proper reissues of the first two releases do ya ? Unbelievable. I live in Kansas City and was out west in '07 talking to the Taang crew @ the store and they were saying how they were up to the task years ago but you guys wanted to crap out that comp with the half-assed crossover stuff instead. I've never seen a band take so many 2 steps back on their legacy like you guys. Unreal.
