People are too funny with their pseudo expert comments… All you need, is to lose the hyper critical mentality that some of us seem to be clinging to, in order to gain appreciation for the immensely pleasing and deeply emotional interpretation of this masterpiece. And if anyone has the slightest doubt as to the excellence of this pianist, let them try to record this piece while they are playing it, and put it out there on the wide open net, with your real name attached to it please…

Don't compare Lugansky's version with this - simply enjoy their individual performances while ppreciating the mastery of Rachmaninoff's composition!

Bharat I agree with you about comparisons. Of course we are entitled to our "favorite" interpretations, but the level of comparisons these days is out of control. Since Yuchan Lim won the Van Cliburn competition,
he has a cult following with a blindness to other great pianists. I was amazed by the Yuchan Lim's playing and he may prove to be one of the greatest, but even if he is, let's not cancel other great pianists. Comments after performances of Rachmonioff 3 began to be
.. well that's ok but have you heard Yuchan Lim. Suddenly everything was "boring" after Yuchan Lim including Wuja Wang and Yefim Bronfam's powerful performances. It is so important to appreciate all the greatness while not losing sight of the one - that would be Rachmonioff.
5 years later but...how the hell did you know i was JUST about to do that unknowingly? is lugansky's version regarded as THE performance of this piece?
The 32nd rest at 2:31 gets me every time wow. Its like the passion keeps building and building until it seizes him and he freezes for just a moment before exploding back into the same energy again. Such a perfect emotional interpretation Mr. Pisarenko
it was not a pause, as a pianist myself i believe he got momentarily "confused" and took a brief moment to reconsile and keep playing correctly. Indeed, this exact part of the piece would benefit from such a pause(intented to create tension) but simply he stopped for too much time in order for it to be considered a pause.
@@pontikipsito46 as someone who has studied the score I’m positive it was intentional. There is a 32nd rest here and none of the other repetitions have it. This is one of the only recordings that bothers to put it in correctly. This guy is also a pro he wouldnt leave something like that in a recording
There is a rest in there. We don't have a piano roll of the composer's own performance of it though, so who knows how that part was intended to be played...
To me it sounds like it massively breaks up the flow, probably because of the abrupt and complete release of the pedal to leave an empty gap with no reverberation.
Although I do believe he was just respecting the 32nd rest, i think he lacked power in the chord after it, making it seem like an abrupt interruption of the piece's flow
I love how dark this piece is. Really eerie and beautiful at the same time. Beautiful piece.
His clarity and Lugansky's power on expression would make the perfect mix I think
CLARITY is as important as interpretation: one cannot hear the interpretation without CLARITY of playing; instead, we have MUDDDINESS which makes clear hearing impossible.

Sir, yes I do find this piece muddily played - excessive use of right pedal; legato in inappropriate places.

The tempo is ok, but one cannot hear a crystal clear line of notes. How about leaving the pedal alone.
How would J.S. Bach sound if the pedal were used to play his keyboard music.

I don’t know how many viewers can appreciate how difficult this it to play . The octave jumps , twisted fingering all at a demanding tempo . Been practicing this piece for months . This is both clear and powerful .
It's late intermediate - early advanced level imo
@onethegogd5783 my teacher gave me this piece about a year into playing piano and I can agree that it is definitely way out of an intermediate player's league.
I'm learning it now, can play the first page and a half at full tempo, it's not too bad. I've played rachmaninoffs little red riding hood before and it appears to be some levels down from riding hood difficulty.

So much power, yet so delicate. This is so Rachmaninoff, and it is truly a masterpiece.

Truly in the "grand" sense - not simply a pyrotechnical mad rush of notes. It seems the new school is so incredible technically that the "singing" within pieces is often lost. This is not the case here - great interpretation

more soul in this playing. Lugansky and Yuja's version more mechanical (Yuja's more). Lola Astanova's version of this piece (where she was more natural looking) was also one of the best I can find in TH-cam

Pourquoi on.passe pas ca a la television toujours des chanteurs jamais des pianistes.jai travaille ce morceau il est vraiment tres dur.le piano instrument tres tres difficile difficile a jouer n est pas mis a l honneur comme tous les autres instrument d ailleurs. Pourtant c est plus dur de jouer du.piano que d etre chanteur et c est toujours eux dont on fait l éloge parfois quand un chanteur se fait acompagner par un pianiste on dit le nom du chanteur et.pas du.pianiste .je suis la Mandela du piano et de la musique ins trumentale en général quand on voit ce que fait ce pianiste c est surnaturel mais bon il faut le voir sur you tube pas à la tele .bravo pour le pianiste ca vaut un Mr Zidane Nadal ou un Federer ...😆.sophie madaghdjian pianiste classique et jazz
I like how he interprets the work in a very eloquent manner while adding nothing from himself (as it usually happens with the famous pieces such as this one). That is my, in my opinion, it is sometimes hard to listen Horowitz play famous works.

Think Pisarenko actually provides a superior performance to Lugansky this time. Pisarenko's rubato is just that bit more nuanced.

Why do people pause at that random spot at the end like this guy and lola astonova and others don't? The pause isn't in the sheet music.
The rest IS there. And only real experts can do the rest. It's a 32nd rest and its freaking gorgeous.

I still like this more than Lugansky for some reason, cant put my finger on it....
It is because it is more expressive. A bit less speed in some areas allows him to bring out some of the melodies quite a bit more. I love it.
Rachmaninoff hates this beautiful play.

@@cousinbocephus8226 There are numerous examples of composers who had the music in their head and knew how it should sound like, but no one was ever able to play it right. Even they were not satisfied by the way they played it.
Do youngsters listen to Rachmaninoff's own recordings, these days? It does not sound like it. He did not play like this. He knew what to do at any moment in the work. Some things do not sound right and should not be done. His phrasing was impeccable and extremely expressive, without beng slushy. If this peice is marked Presto, then it means that you cannot do huge ritardandi in the phrases without ruining the flow. Did this one think about that? Do all Russians play like this because they have lost all the really good teachers who knew how to phrase, about balance and consistency? Apparently.
