Historians call the 19th century the "infinite century" for a reason... This image and sound perfectly sum up what this century meant for Portugal. The glory of the explorations was long gone by then. And with the help of the Napoleonic wars, and then of a civil war between brothers, the country fell into a strange place on the fringes of the European world. Isolation was increasing and, to this day, Portugal has never recovered from it. The first people to dominate the mighty Atlantic Ocean allowed themselves to be forgotten, mainly through their own faults. Curiously, 1889 was one of the calmest years for Portugal in this century. However, the humiliation was consummated with the British ultimatum the following year. That's why we Portuguese tend to have a melancholic personality, because we are looking for our golden age again...
