I live in the interior of Alaska and as a huge train nerd this has been a bucket list place to visit. One of these days I'll make the 13 hour drive lol.
In 1988 after having driven my 1969 VW campervan all through Alaska and the Yukon I heard a steam train whistle while I was parked near the cruise ship pier in Skagway. I found my way to the 73 steam loco and spoke to the Engineer whose name I think I remember as Keith. He not only invited me onto the footplate for several trips from the cruise ship pier but organised me to go in the cab of the diesels (painted blue back then) for a magnificent trip up the White Pass. I wonder if Keith was still driving the 73 in your video? I just subscribed to your channel and please do the same for me Train Lord in South Australia a long way away from this epic action but brings back wonderful memories of an unforgettable experience. Cheers
Thank you for sharing your video's and for allowing us to use them. I made a train music video with your White pass video for seniors lodges and Care homes during lockdowns. I can tell you they appreciated your video very much. I Have forwarded the rest of your video's to them to view also. You create great joy in your expert filmography. Thanks again
Think spell check should be activated. The scene at US/CANADA demarcation is listed as "Boarder". Should be "Border". We know what you meant. Just thought it was funny. Video is incredibile, beautiful. Great filming.
It would be a good idea if they connect a water tender to the train then that way there would be no reason to stop as much to fill the steam train train up with water.
As I understand it (outsider) 69 was rebuilt in someways “not to the fullest extent” to quote someone who was involved with those doing the rebuilding. Plus WP&Y crews are used to 73, superheated and very modern being from Baldwin’s last batch of 3’ 2-8-2s, but comparison 69 is a good deal older (1900 technology) and a saturated “soaker”. 73 even has a front end throttle and 69 doesn’t even have later style steam chests. For crews used to the 1940s improvements of 73, 69 is older, smaller, and less advanced and efficient. This plays a major part regardless of whether or not certain aspects of 69’s overhaul were rushed.

Tunnel mountain and ledge at 23:40 is wonderful . Railway builders art.
It’s a good thing 73’s running. That means that two of the four 70 class 2-8-2s are currently operational.

Superb video Gary!
What a great video!. Thank you for posting this!. I model narrow gauge in ON30.....
A very nice video! Are there any good railfanning locations along the White Pass that you can recommend?
It’s really hard to find a location as there aren’t any roads near the tracks.
Is 73 one of tweetsie railroad 190's sister engines? I know she is a 2-8-2 and is a Baldwin and ran on the WP&Y
The #190 at Tweetsie came from WP&Y, as did the #70 and #192 from Dollywood.
@@oooraeooo lmao that totally answered my question🤣 ur about as helpful as Tweetsie staff🤣
@@kanawharailfan5793 How much more info do you want? Start w Wikipedia and go from there.
@@oooraeooo i was just playin wit u. Chill out.😳
No, 190 is a USATC S118 class, the 73 is of the White Pass 70 class.

Will 69 ever return?
Locomotive 69 is undergoing 1472 inspection/rebuild now.

69s whistle sounds kinda like CN 3254s whistle
Sounds VERY similar to the whistle on Virginia Truckee's Robert C. Gray Number #29.
I think it may be a CB&Q 5 chime
I think it sounds like IAIS 6988’s whistle
What kind of whistle does 69 use? I know it’s a 5 chime of some sort
I know dmir 332 has a five or six chime
@@kawazy9528 what does that have to do with this
@@amtrak_121 Well, dmir 332s whistle is loud, and these ones are loud.
@@kawazy9528 yeah but how does that answer my question?
@@amtrak_121 Well, It could be a CB&Q 5 chime or a Southern 5 chime-
what wheel arangement is 69?
Outside frame 2-8-0
What is 69’s current status as of today right now?
Stored, has not run since 2013. Unlikely to run again in my opinion
@@TrainmanBrando What a bummer! Oh well!
@@TrainmanBrando how do you know that?
