I have a crazy idea: Could you cover some songs from Death Magnetic using some of these vintage Metallica guitar tones? For example, the Day That Never Comes with tones from ...And Justice For All, and Suicide & Redemption with tones from Master of Puppets. So that we can see just how much they "returned to their roots". I would love to hear some of those riffs with an old school sound to it. It's really hard to compare Death Magnetic songs with older songs because of production differences. I think Metallica fans would love it! Anyway, just an idea!!
Interesting how they progressively kept removing any middle from the tone, then all of a sudden jacked it right back up for Black. Personal fave tone is probably MOP, lots of body and warmth, but still heavy as fark.
+JZA1981 The mid frequencies targeted shifted a bit too. Ride The Lightning had crap tons of low-mid, no 700-1200, Master took out a bit more low mid and mid. Justice had the low-mids scooped to hell as well. Then the Black Album had pretty hefty 500 Hz midrange, but scooped 1k, so it still had body and punch for open chords, but scoop for ultimate the br00tal chuggz.
Arvaa Kuka Well my amp is a Line 6 Spider IV 15 and I googled what settings Ride The Lightning were. My guitar on the other hand is a pretty cheap all black one that I admittly got at a pawn shop for 80$, so if that'll work any guitar will haha.
All you need is an audio interface, any old computer should be fine really, and a copy of either Bias FX or Bias Amp (desktop). Bias Amp is specifically for guitar tones, it's got tons of little features so it's fantastic for building your exact tone, wheras Bias FX, is more focused on using effects on your tones (like reverb, delay en shit). You can still make your own tones on FX but it's not as in-depth as Bias Amp. Hope this helps!
Hey buddy, been a while. Your channel is kicking ass, great work. Wish I could say the same. If you're serious about getting on the guitar and get yourself an interface, let me know. I might be able to help
I've never seen another video that's able to really capture the legendary Black Album tone but this absolutely nails it, amazing that amp modeling software has progressed to the point of capturing not only the Mark IIC plus tone but tone but the heavy layering they did on that album
Puppets has to be my favorite tone, it's sounds so dirty while also sounding clear as glass. Justice would be my favorite if it was fuller, it just sounds too empty.
They scooped the mids a bit, but the bass had a strong mid-range which would of complimented the mix fantastically. Too bad you can't hear it, but there's plenty of remixes with the actual bass tracks jason recorded that suggest that AJFA could of sounded amazing if the full freq spectrum would of been utilised. It basically has a giant hole missing out of it.
+isaac white Why so defensive? I'm a Metallica fan too...he did a great job with tones and playing on this video. I just wanted to see what he could do if the same thing was done with Megadeth. It's not some contest, jeez.
ThatGuyBen99 im not meaning it in an insulting way, i just saw a bunch of old metallica vids and all i saw was a bunch of megadeth fans shitting on the video and it pissed me off
a little fun fact is that the Kill Em All guitar tone was in pretty much every rock band in the 70s and 80s...and pretty much all Thrash bands had this tone in the 80s...\\m//
I love Bias and actually downloaded some of your tones before I discovered your TH-cam channel. It is awesome. I grew up in the same golden era of rock/metal. Your ear is spot on my man. Disposable Heroes tone was so perfect, it kicked me in the Jimmy.
You are the Master of Tones!!! Not even Metallica themselves can make their guitars sound like that anymore! lol You should be a sound engineer for their new album!
That would be awsome! I wish Metallica could sound now like they did then. The reason, I believe, is that they can't sing to the sound they had back in the 80's and early 90's. James's voice is a lot higher than it used to be.
Jeremiah A yes, lets ruin metallicas albums with digital tones

Infinity Funny thing is that metallica used bias and other software shit instead of actual amps like they used to. Just read the sound engineers blog. He even says that they use bias and diesel for live stuff and hardwired.
Love it!!! I’m using Positive Grid Go too. But for learning as my first real amp and it’s so liberating to have it attached to my guitar ready to go in 30 seconds; instead of having to stay by the shitty pawn shop amplifiers from fender and peavy that were too pain in the ass to adjust and never sounded right anyway. Seeing how much modeling you can do on more advanced Positive Grid models has me sold years into the future practice already 😀
what about making metallica covers from tones of different albums? for example songs of the Ride the Lighning with the tone of Master of puppets or viceversa, it would be awesome!
i had to listen to each album tone and then take a break between each transition to ensure i was hearing it right... sort of like doing a taste test of beers. must cleanse the palate. my opinion is that these are spot on. you really nailed these tones. pretty awesome. thank you for spending the time on this. and i just noticed this was posted in 2016. i'm a bit late to the game, but i am really happy i found this vid.
Thanks for putting these tones up on ToneCloud. I have been having a lot of fun with them (and the Slayer and Zakk Wylde tones). I'm too busy noodling or jamming to dial in a decent tone usually so these have been fantastic!
i LOVE the Black Album tone. Way better than Justice. Sounds so full and Chuggy at the same time. The mids are scooped to the right point and at the right frequency
Off the back of this I got bias for my iPad and downloaded your tones. They sound amazing. I'm running a epiphone SG with bare knuckle nail bombs, Irig 2, iPad mini, into the fx loop of my fender deville. Thank you for the tones. Keep up the great work with your channel. Cheers
It's because they become difficult to listen to live, they get lost in the mix completely and having absolutely no mids completely fucks with some people's ears. Having a scooped EQ is different to just having no mids at all, sounds scooped but can still be heard in a mix, have no mids whatsoever and the guitar tone just becomes non existent.
The whole "no mids" thing is correct to an extent, especially live, or depending on how the rest of the instruments sound in a mix. But it's kind of just one of those shitty things you read on a forum that's become pseudo-fact, it's basically a trend. Too much mid can muddy up your tone as well, but since mid range is the most predominant area in a guitar signal then it makes sense in a layman's way to say "more is better, don't scoop mids etc" but that's half baked science. Do what you think sounds cool to you, but always be mindful of what's around you. AJFA/MOP don't have as incredibly scooped mids as you'd think either. Justice is more scooped than MOP but the whole mix is like that.
I LOVE this video! BIAS Amp is so cool, I just haven’t been able to bring myself to buy all the plug-ins. And of course your playing is incredible. Thank you Lambchopper for posting this! Been following you for a couple years and you never disappoint! Keep rockin’ dude!
Damn dude, that's spot on! I think I like Puppets tone the best, but they all sound accurate to the records. I also use BIAS and it's the best software solution I've found for guitar tone...and I've tried them all. \m/ \m/ P.S. - Subscriber 45,571 here...keep up the good work!
Interesting video with a cool idea, but I'm disappointed to find yet another player messing up several riffs... So weird, I can't even remember the last time I saw a video of someone actually playing everything correctly. Why is this? Not that you played sloppily or flubbed notes, just had a few of the riffs slightly wrong. Anyway, thanks.
There's always a discussion about how Metallica played their riffs. I was a teenager who saved up and bought all official cherry lane books thinking they were written by Metallica. I spent many years learning how not to do it. I began using my ears, watching live footage and listening to studio recordings of raw tracks. I'm a huge fan and go to ridiculous steps to learn these songs accurately. I Welcome opinions and suggestions and yours is appreciated. I have to ask, how do you figure I'm playing parts incorrectly?
It's just a bunch of little things that add up and my ears can't ignore it. Not palm-muting the 5th-fret D in the Fade to Black chorus riff, missing the "2p0" pull-off in the Creeping Death riff, Sanitarium's chorus riff seems shaky but that's always been one I had trouble deciphering (I think it's a palm-muted chromatic descent ending the second bar [3-2-1] instead of [3-2-3] and an F to end the fourth bar where it looks like you hit an F#--again, though, I could have this one wrong too), sounding the fifth on that C# powerchord in the Disposable Heroes pre-chorus riff instead of striking only the root every other time it's played open and then some more missed palm-mutes on the bit that follows (if any of that makes sense), an even more insignificant slip during the Shortest Straw that's not even worth explaining haha... Once again, the video is cool and the tones are great. I used to drive my friends nuts just correcting them constantly when we would jam on Metallica songs. I know it's annoying. Yours was just the latest in a long series of videos I've watched with what my perfectionist ass considers mistakes so that's why yours got the comment I guess. Thanks again for the content, keep rocking.
@RJ Q He played it just fine, you're just the kind of jealous person who always has to cut someone down when they do a good job. Fuck off. I've been playing guitar for 6 years and I know that everything you just said to him in your "criticism" is total nonsense which makes it apparent that you are someone who doesn't know how to even play.
So basically it just didn't change much between Lightning and Black Album... The only thing that changed is the addition of bass guitar within the mix.
Nah he's onto something, from an engineers standpoint they used similar amps and gain staging all through those years, it was the mixing and placement that really changed things. I mean they obviously changed their mids a bit but it's generally the same sound across the board, even though it does sound different. Different speakers, micing and rooms, different mixing, different complimenting instruments etc all play a way bigger part.
"They used similar amps and gain staging all through those years" Nope they didnt. They started out with Marshall Super Leads, went onto Marshall JCM800's and then on MOP started using Mesa Mk IIc', and a whole bunch of mix-matched poweramps on the Black Album. Then there's cabs, different mics, different mixers... All things that radically change the sound. From an engineers standpoint, Lightning and the Black Album couldnt have been more different, shy of digital recording equipment.
"evolutionˌiːvəˈluːʃ(ə)n,ˈɛv-/noun the gradual development of something. " No mention of perceived quality.Just development.Aka change. So, not weird :P
I love the Kill 'em All classic thrash tone.
It's just straight up every person's first amp and first guitar tone 😎😎 friggin distortion with a cheap amp haha beautiful
Yes
Also the sound on Lars ride cymbal
Or do you just love thrash
imo, this is the most spot-on tone in this vid. it sounds like it was lifted from the album. nuck'in futs.
The Justice tone is so badass
Nolan Moore easily the ballsiest Metallica tone
It's always been my favorite tone of theirs. SOOOOOOOO HEAVY!
idk man, the black album had such an amazing tone as well
To be fair, I don't think there's an album with bad tone.
Kill Em All is the best tone. It’s really punk
For me the best tuning is on ...And Justice For All
I think ride the lightning was best.
+Matheus Navarro They all use the same tuning though :^)
+Matheus Navarro "Kill em all" tone was more real... I remembered the old Marshall.
+Matheus Navarro You mean tone
+Tiago Gonçalves Which got stolen and inspired Fade to Black
It was funny watching the mids slowly disintegrate from KEA to AJFA
RatSitnov wrong
Really only Lightning and Black had prominent midrange. The other albums were pretty damn scooped
And lightning and black album has the best production.
ZondaboY64 ride the lightning has the worst mixing out of all of their thrash albums.
@@manipreferchicken4083 I feel like you forgot about justice lmao
holy shit this guy has not made a video in 3 months I legit thought he quit youtube .Thanks lambchopper for still making vidoes.
Agreed so glad you're still rockin me chopper
+reereelization Sorry boys, the Xmas period was chaos.
I'll never leave...
+Blacksmith Channel I took the family to Bali for a week, it was good
+LambChopper678 wow,, greetings from Indonesia.. Are you enjoying bali??
+Angga Pradana We did thank you, had a great time
justice... my favourite tone
its so chunky and good
And it makes the bass more listenable... well, if it was a bass in the album
in fact, it's the worst in terms of mix, but taste is taste
Not enough mids.
David Elford they all lack mids, gets old...

Like! I've thought the same before
yeah!
SOMEONE ALREADY DID THAT, SEARCH IT AND YOU SHOULD FIND IT, THINK ITS CALLED SOMETHING LIKE IF METALLICA KEPT THEIR OLD TONES
i've got couple of those videos
I didn't find anything man.
Interesting how they progressively kept removing any middle from the tone, then all of a sudden jacked it right back up for Black.

i heard black album was recorded with no mids on their mesas, but the mids came from JCM800s
+Infinity Exactly
It's actually still a scooped sound the black album one
This is the best thing i've ever seen in my life
In my opinion RtL tune is the best by far. I would like to use it by myself
Agreed. That's what my amp is set to and it almost never changes haha.
Bengie Macfarlane Nice. May I ask you what guitar and what amp,do you have? Im planning on buying one too
Arvaa Kuka Well my amp is a Line 6 Spider IV 15 and I googled what settings Ride The Lightning were. My guitar on the other hand is a pretty cheap all black one that I admittly got at a pawn shop for 80$, so if that'll work any guitar will haha.

This is so awesome! That Master/Justice tone is ballbusting!
The mids get progressively more non-existent.
The Mad Ginger until the black album...
Fade to mids
RTL has more mids than KEA
Holy SHIT, Chopper!! I can't believe how exactly you nailed their tone. WOW!!
man.... this guy is spot on with everything. I will look back to this channel to dial in these tones for a long time.
Puppets has to be my favorite tone, it's sounds so dirty while also sounding clear as glass. Justice would be my favorite if it was fuller, it just sounds too empty.
I think that's because of the lack of bass

Too much bass on ...And Justice
It's the "...and Jason for all" version ;)
it's AND JUSTICE FOR JASON
either one
Perfect amount of bass, it pushes the speakers like on the album lol
Sun of Nothing I think the word your looking for is not enough bass lol

It's pretty incredible how the bias FX can emulate all the styles so accurately it's sounds great
Awesome video btw!
i LOVE the Black Album tone. Way better than Justice. Sounds so full and Chuggy at the same time. The mids are scooped to the right point and at the right frequency
Dario Baez WHATT???

Can someone explain why people say ``Metal Tones with extremly low mids suck`` while Master of puppets and AJFA have the best tone and mids below 0?
It's because they become difficult to listen to live, they get lost in the mix completely and having absolutely no mids completely fucks with some people's ears. Having a scooped EQ is different to just having no mids at all, sounds scooped but can still be heard in a mix, have no mids whatsoever and the guitar tone just becomes non existent.

Justice is more scooped than MOP but the whole mix is like that.
Justice has my all time least favourite guitar tone. The album is borderline unlistenable.
because it "gets lost in the mix" - but that's assuming you don't adjust drums and bass. seattle 89 is the best sounding performance ever...
Low mids work well in studio because of studio processing. Live is a whole different can of worms.
I LOVE this video! BIAS Amp is so cool, I just haven’t been able to bring myself to buy all the plug-ins. And of course your playing is incredible. Thank you Lambchopper for posting this! Been following you for a couple years and you never disappoint! Keep rockin’ dude!

You have restored my faith in modeling software. My vypyr sounds like a half assed 6505.
Fucking amazing video. If that guitar disappears mysteriously then it's because I have stolen it.
Thanks for reuploading them man, they sound awesome!
Too much treble on MoP. Other than that, great performance, keep it up!
I'm glad that you're back!
I’m interested in their Load tone. I always loved the tone on that album.
OHHH MAN, you are one of the best youtube guitar player(if not the best), thank you for your great videos
shouldn't the bass for Justice be set to 0? :P
Hahaha good one
Man, you just nailed Metallica's tone... awesome
Are you ever gonna do something by Megadeth again?
+Koasterking212 Of course I will. Not sure about the new album though, the guitar playing in that is ridiculously good.
+LambChopper678 I know, I think you can do it though. You're pretty good
+LambChopper678 Amazing Riffs, and amazing solos by Kiko. Hybrid Picking is new for many guitar players in YT community
Kiko's playing is amazing, so far out of my league - there's no way I'd be able to keep up there. So clean and fluid, Dave sure knows how to pick them
+LambChopper678 please, do a cover of king nothing or fuel with the justice album guitar tone.
You nailed the Black Album - godamn good work.
Justice tone is their absoloute best
your kill emall tone is utterly perfect
I love your guitars!! By seeing them you like a Randy Rhoads fan!
That's actually Alexi Laiho's signature model, but with a custom body job
+Jake McB I know, was talking about his other ones in the background ;)
Wynter Schroeder Ah yes, the white one is a Jackson Rhoads, but the other one is a Dean VMNT Angel of Deth
+Jake McB yep!!
+Jake McB similar to the gold swirl
I'm so happy that you're back, i was worry about you, welcome again😍
No tone for EP LOAD/RELOAD/ST ANGER?
That's because they did not use any. All they did was record themselves sitting on the toilet...
+Nathanael Lingerfelt I think, without a doubt, that this is the most point-on album review(s) I've ever read. You sir, just owned the internet.
Damn dude, that's spot on! I think I like Puppets tone the best, but they all sound accurate to the records. I also use BIAS and it's the best software solution I've found for guitar tone...and I've tried them all. \m/ \m/
