i saw gilbert live at the gathering and it was fucking epic. he just kept saying "fuck" this person and that person for 10 minutes, then read old jokes off a piece of paper, then ripped a bong hit from the crowd. that shit was a blast. he gave 0 fucks. i love his stories about old famous people when he just continuously cranks on them and makes fun of how old they are and brittle lmao

Many comedians put on an exaggerated version of themselves. Even Carlin sounded extremely different being interviewed on radio versus his stage persona. Gilbert obviously never felt comfortable being funny in his "real voice". But what is fake about something that's worked so well for so long? Maybe it is now his real voice, and the subdued "normal voice" is a put-on.
