I love how it looks and sounds just like the 966 that we had on our ranch. We cut our hay and alfalfa with that tractor, but we used a good old Rowse Double 9 sickle bar mower and then got put on a H&S 16 wheel V-rake right after that every season. Great video and great memories. Thanks Jason 😊

Man, what a great old tractor and haybine! That's the way things were done when I was a kid and working on a farm. Actually, the farmer I worked of for used a Ford tractor and a sickle bar. Worked fine and we put up a lot of hay every summer. Simply great to see this set-up. Two more videos and you'll hit the 2000 video milestone. Congrats They've all been excellent.

Just put down hay, yesterday, with my Farmall 560D, 120 sickle mower & 2A hay conditioner. Worked great. The weather has been hot & dry enough to have it ready to be baled today. First time making hay in a little less than 24 hrs. I can deal with that. Regards, Jason!

    Nice tractor!
In 1975 Dad purchased a 966 and a 574 new. Our farming operation in Indiana was mainly cattle so we cut a lot of hay. I spent many days driving the 966 mowing hay with a Heston 1010 hydro swing (9’ cut).
We then stacked the hay with a Heston 10 Stakhand.
    Thanks for the memories 👍🇺🇸

Dad and I were in partnership a few years, after I finished high school. "I chose " a new John Deere 4020 gear drive, with a JD five bottom plow. A year later " dad chose " the International Harvester 966 Hydro with a five bottom plow, International also. There was no comparison, the International plowed / worked circles around the 4020; it wore its plow points down to almost nothing. A spectacular tractor, Thank you International Harvester! Tim. I do all our mowing with the exact same mower conditioner. Down here in Australia they were designated NH 489. They’re a great little mower that can go the distance. I only wish I had one of the 66 series IHC tractors to pull it with. Love the looks of them more than the 86 series tractors. We use a Case 2290 or a good old Aussie made Chamberlain C 6-100, 110 hp, a Chamberlain Countryman, 80 hp, or a Inter AW7, 55 hp. Cut, rake and round bale around 450 acres each year. Its a credit to the owner of these two machines how well looked after they are.
As per, another great vid. The best on You Tube.

When my parents use to dairy farm dad had a new Holland 467 haybine an had it hooked up to a late 60’s Case 730 comfort king diesel tractor. Loved operating the tractor.

    • @jtoddjb
      @jtoddjb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I love those old Case comfort king tractors. I'm saddened by how many comments I see from people who used to farm or who's parents used to farm. It's a bummer everyone builds houses in the middle of every field they can find and then those who want to be farmers often struggle to get started because the land is at such a premium. I know it's hard to believe when you look around at all the farmland that seems to be everywhere, but someday we'll be importing our food just like we do with foreign oil, and we all know how well that has worked out over the past few decades. It's going to be much worse when it's the food supply. I think a federal law needs to be made that if it's farmland now it will remain farmland and cannot be developed. The owner of the land will get some kind of tax breaks or some sort of real good incentives to make up for him not being able to sell his own land however he wants and he'll have to sign up voluntarily. It seems a bit anti-freedom, but something has to be done now rather than later. Once it's certified productive agriculture land, no taxes (or low taxes) and no development other than agricultural development can be performed on that land for eternity.

We had two of those 966s. Dad bought the first one when I was still in college with 34” rear tires. I bought another in 1974 when I came home and started farming with my Dad and it had 38” rears. Both were tough, torquey and reliable. We put a lot of hours on both and mine we used on a 5 yard Reynolds dirt scoop. After several thousand hours on the scoop, I removed the bull gear housings and swapped sides with the bull gear and brake pinions and run it several thousand more hours. Those were the days! Grading land for furrow irrigation with a 5 yard bucket. The only downside to a 966 as a non turbo engine is they were hard on the hearing if you didn’t wearing ear protection. I’m retired now and to my knowledge, both tractors are still being used on other farms!

Nice setup. I'm keeping my eyes open for a 966 or 1066. It seems like the 966s go quite a bit cheaper than the 1066.
We still mow with a sickle bar mower, a Hesston 1090 using a JD3020D. Then tedd or rake with the Farmall H. And bale with the 3020 and a JD336 square baler.

The 966 is a good tractor. It is less popular than a 1066 and offers less horse power but would be a very good hating tractor. You have a nice hay team with H and 3020. I have a video with an IH 460 and HESSTON PT7 mower conditioner posted at th-cam.com/video/gy24Km03O5U/w-d-xo.html

In 1971 you could buy a bare bones 966 for 10 K or less. They did indeed go up thru the years. But 18k for a bare bones 966 in 1976 sounds high to me.

In 1975 a 966 with TA could be bought for $14,000. That included ROPS and canopy.

Liked the video, thank you! Sad to see beautiful countryside littered with wind turbines.

Very nice combo. My neighbor mowed hay with a pair of 489s powered by a 686 and a 656.

@@bigtractorpower It's always a pleasure. Five decades ago, my father had a IH tractor. And I, happily, rode on it...
