  • Masterclass with Professor Pascal Moraguès in which they work the Sonata for clarinet and piano in E flat major op 120 no. 2 by Brahms. This masterclass took place at Sony Auditorium of the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, Madrid 2021.
    Student: Pablo Tirado
    Accompanying pianist: Patricia Araúzo
Venue: Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, Madrid (Spain) 25/01/2021
    J. Brahms: Sonata for clarinet and piano in E flat major op 120 no. 2 - II. Allegro appassionato
    Abstract:
Moragués comments the difficulty of combining expressiveness with tuning, and they work in detail on the beginning of the movement to adjust each note with the piano. He explains that the tongue must serve the clarinetist like the bow to the string players. All corrections are aimed at achieving the appropriate expressiveness, phrasing and energy for every musical line.

@@pablotirado483 I thought it was really helpful that he focused so precisely on intonation. As a string player, I am very familiar with this idea of what I call "expressive intonation", but I have noticed that some wind instrumentalists are a bit casual about this area of their work. You responded really well and quickly to his suggestions.

Thank you very much for your comment. You are completely right, we normaly dont focus that much on entonation. Of course we try to be on tune, but not all teachers are that exigent in that way, and I really appreciate it. Best wishes!
