I am horrified by the facts that you have presented, having been watching day by day as this slaughter has been allowed to continue. It is one thing to pursue tactical military objectives designed to eliminate the threat of enemy combatants and the hierarchy of an enemy command; and a completely other matter to coldly orchestrate mass civilian death, devastation and starvation. It is understandable to me that fundamentally religious Israeli Jews would be fine with all this. If you look in the Old Testament you will see babies being dashed on rocks when people were being conquered, slaughtered by King Herod when he was trying to kill the baby Jesus; and you see God getting angry and punishing his chosen people for leaving the enemy alive. So, that helps to explain Israel. But America? America, especially the “Religious Right” is adamant about the fact that we are a Christian Nation. That Jesus is their Savior and so naturally we are going to support Israel, God’s chosen people, all the way, no matter what. But, there is nothing going on here that bares a resemblance to the acts or teachings of Jesus. He preached about love for one another and forgiveness. He was a healer. He resurrected from the dead. He didn’t put people to death. In the end of his life on Earth as a man, he was put to death by fundamentalist deeply religious Jews. But it is the media, politicians and those who seek to profit by perpetuating the misrepresentation of the Jewish State of Israel being a God fearing Christian Country, filled with Christian people.
The second point I want to make is that although, Ana, you are spot on and absolutely correct in all that you are laying out for people to see; there is one piece missing and it is called Iran. We cannot escape the fact that the West and Iran have been at odds, for a long time, with people in power busy hating the other country and dedicating resources to undermine the other. With Iran having funded Hamas and supporting Hezbollah, it seems obvious that the Israelis are chewing through Lebanon and closer to direct confrontation with Iran. If that is the plan, then probably the Israelis don’t want Hamas reconstituting itself behind them. They would probably feel much safer with the Israeli settlers at their back. It indicates that Israel is planning to go much further than many people thought.
