One thing you should realize: Fantasia is human fantasy, according to the empress - human kid's creations. Therefore forgetting about books and kids not using imagination, causes oblivion in Fantasia.
Human children are like Gods to that world, that have the power to create or destroy. So it makes sense that only a human child can "name" the empress and give power to creation once again; to start over. Other characters in that world don't have such powers, they are just creations.
Our imagination is the neverending story. It's inifnite~

      Exactly! :)

    • @MGmirkin
      @MGmirkin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah, that's exactly the point...
Also, it's a very 4th-wall-breaking story, in that it effectively **involves** or requires the participation of the reader/viewer.
And, one of the lines also says that the viewer in the theater or at home is thus **also** part of the Neverending Story. So, just as Bastian was with Atreyu through his adventures, so the movie-watching audience was with Bastian through his adventures. And, who knows, maybe some higher power has been with us through and entertained by our own adventures in life? So, it's a very kind of "meta" sort of thing...
And since it was the moving of humanity away from storytelling and imagination that was the source of the Nothing destroying Fantasia (or the internal fantasy-world of humanity), the implication is that by this kid using his imagination to wish for fantastical things and believing in fantasy or the fantastic, he can help to "restore" Fantasia through the power of his own imagination. And it was, essentially, his "belief" in the story, and his belief in his part in the story, confirmed by calling out his mother's name as the Empress's new name, that allowed him to save Fantasia and become an active part of the "story.".
Thus once he starts "wishing" we see scenes of a "restored" fantasia, with Atreyu and Artax, the rock monster, the racing snail, etc.all having been brought back.

There's a bit more to it than that if you read the book.
There's also discussion of the cycle of trauma. There's the life of the reader of the book. Continuing on afterward which creates ripples long after their death
It's an amazing story of metaphysical phenomena

The movie is unfortunately only the first half of the book. Bastian ends up becoming a power-hungry king, because the more wishes he made, the more of his memory of his life in the real world is erased. There's ends up being a battle between the armies of Bastian and Atreyu at the Ivory Tower. It's well worth the read. It's like Lord of the Rings for kids.

@@HelloMellowXVI Truth. "Neverending Story 2"was partially based on the second half of the book, but it wasn't nearly as good.
As for the second half of the book, it's one of the best showings of characters slipping into evil I've seen in a novel. Basically, real world Bastian is chubby, short and awkward and the power of the wishes he's given turns him slowly from a hero into the antagonist of the story. Oh, theres a "witch"character that helps it along, but overall, Bastian is the one who does the worst of it.
It becomes a true escapist fantasy for himself. He makes a magical (and unbeatable) sword for himself, he makes himself good looking, he changes things around for people of Fantasia(Fantastica in the novel)but, in the process, makes things worse for people as it upsets the balance of the world. He eventually decides to make himself Childlike Emperor as his memories of the real world slowly fade away, which leads to his eventual clash with Atreyu.
Also, there is no third movie, so you'd better get that shit outta your head! Lol.

Same here, 36! But for the question, if it deserves to be a classic: Idk, I know a few movies or tv shows, that I still love to this day, where at least part of the reason why is because I already loved it as a child.
Like Hook for example! I LOVE Hook, but I showed it to a friend of mine this year for the first time and he wasn´t quite as enthusiastic as I was.
Now compare that to The Neverending Story. Are adults even capable of gravitating towards it enoughly? (That sounded weird) When they watch it for the first time?....
Which one would you say is better? Hook or The Neverending Story?
I mean, I personally even love The Neverending Story 2. I had it even on audio cassette growing up. Of course I recognize its flaws, but they don´t ruin the movie for me by any means. Only with part 3 it gets difficult for me to rewatch, although it´s got some of the most "90s" feel of ALL movies, if you watch it satirically......

Favorite '80s kids movie - either "The Dark Crystal" or "The Last Unicorn", which are both *well* worth watching for different reasons.
The Dark Crystal excels due to the graphical design (it is, technically, the only live-action film to not feature *any* humans, as everything used is either animatronic or Muppet in nature, barring a single long-shot in which a human actor portrays Jen), though the story can be a bit faltering. There's a lot of unnecessary internal monologues that play when Jen is alone, but those were added at the studio's request, as the original intent was to keep those scenes silent.
The Last Unicorn tells an amazing story with good visuals (done by the studio that would eventually become Studio Ghibli) with complex, mature themes, and if you have a solid grasp of the mythology of unicorns (namely that they have a strong affiliation with virgins), the speech from Molly Grue will break your heart. Just make sure to watch the Enchanted edition, as the original DVD or Bluray release snipped out instances of the word "Damn" without much reason. The villain, voiced by the unimpeachable Christopher Lee (aka Saruman the Wise from Lord of the Rings), also has a sympathetic motivation - it doesn't decrease his villainy, but it definitely makes it understandable.

    • @MGmirkin
      @MGmirkin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +1 to Dark Crystal.
Also, The Last Unicorn was my favorite movie as a kid. Pretty much watched it on repeat at the babysitter's. As an adult, I'd say it's very much a "kids movie" and feels like it doesn't hold up quite as well. But, it's still ... "okay."

There are aspects that genuinely hold up *better* as an adult - Molly's aforementioned speech, King Haggard's motive rant, and Schmendrick's quiet rebuttal of Molly's wish for Amalthea and Lir to live happily ever after.
"There are no happy endings, because nothing ends." As a kid, it sounds like a bit of weird nonsense - but as an adult?

@@sarah.the.clumsyIt really only sounds weird because it's in English. The author of the book, Michael Ende, was German and so the original was written in his native language. The name "Moonchild" in the German book was "Mondenkind", which should really translate to "The Child of the Moon"( sounds a lot more fantastical not to mention a bit less like a name and more of a title for the empress). There are lots of examples of "moon" names from a variety of cultures though. The Irish name "Amaris" also literally translates to Moon Child. The names Selene, Selena, Diana & Cynthia all come from various ancient Goddesses of the Moon, as does the Hindi name “Chandra”. Liviana is Hebrew for “white moon", Mona is the Old English word for moon, and there are tons of names that mean moon (or some variation of moon) from the Middle East & Asia. And of course the more popular and obvious "Luna". Don't get me wrong I thought it was weird when I figured it out, and still do honestly, but I think a lot of that comes from the translation.

The Henson puppet movies are pretty amazing. It's interesting what they get up to, even if it is obviously fake. Dark Crystal was interesting to me even as I laughed at how gelflings have to turn their whole bodies (they can't really turn their heads). Labyrinth has that scene with the orange guys that terrified me.
The Swamps in this movie are interesting, too. Even as a kid I got that it was saying my "dark moods" could go too far. It was even more appropriate when Atreyu, who loved him, couldn't snap the horse out of it. Sometimes you try and try, but the person you love sinks anyway.

My favourite thing about this movie, is that Fantasia can only exist if people dream and hope, it can only exist in the dreams and hopes of the people involved in the story. Which is ANYONE that reads the book or sees the movie, so by watching it you're inadvertently helping to keep Fantasia and all of its inhabitants alive and the more people dream, the bigger and more magnificent it becomes. It's literally an infinite story that connects everyone that watches/reads it together. I adore this movie with my entire soul.

As a kid the concept of the nothing and watching them fly toward the tower at the end in space was like mind blowing but I just went with it. I didn’t necessarily understand it all but I understood what it meant to the story and the characters. It definitely allowed me to enjoy more abstract and ideas as well as appreciating things for just being aesthetically pleasing.
I totally understand what didn’t age well about it but I don’t even see it when I watch it now. I just enjoy it. As an adult I have a better understanding about the themes and messages. Could it have been better? Of course. Could it be done better today? Possibly as a mini series but I honestly don’t need it. This means so much to me and how I’ve viewed other media as a child and adult I can just accept it for what it is and enjoy it.

The Servant of The Nothing, the giant wolf Gmork, was the substance of many nightmares for tens of thousands of children 30 plus years ago. I myself was one of them.
My grandmother was babysitting us, and we got to watch this movie. She had the subtitles on, and I remember practicing reading the words on screen while watching it.
When the Gmork began speaking, his subtitles were in green. Somehow, that made it even more horrifying to eight year old me.

Like parents kissing kids - now its "aw gross you pedo!" Back then it was normal and not sexual Whatsoever.
It's an interesting take about the Falcor thing. But just like watching a foreign movie and not getting every little bit of the message due to culture differences - those differences can be felt from the same culture in different time periods.
It's an interesting take, thanks for sharing.

Orange juice, raw egg smoothie with a splash of tabasco was an old 80s hangover cure. Its purposeful to show that not only Bastion is having a rough time with the passing of his mother. His dad is also drinking more to cope. Raw egg cocktails and smoothies were popular from the 60s through the 80s. Some of them are really good because a beaten/shaken raw egg adds a frothy texture to alcoholic drinks.
