I hope people realize how brilliant Fil is. I studied music for years, and every time I listen to Fil, I learn something new.
My favorite part of this channel is reading Fil's facial expressions as he enjoys the music...his appreciation for great music is just precious.

Dusty was one of the best of all time. No question about that.
Sliding in and out of notes gives her the bluesy attractive sound. Loved her. My teen years she accompanied my advantures with her great song, 'Wishing And Hoping' being the best times. Thank you Phil, but most of all, Thank You Miss Springfield, you were one of the very best.

Dusty was great but I gotta say again Fil always impresses me with his knowledge and analysis of musical character (if that's a thing). I wish I'd had a friend or teacher like him back in the day - maybe I could have become a singer or some kind of musician.
I wouldn’t have been good enough to be a performing musician, I am sure I would have been better. The piano teach I had the longest, I hated most of the music I had to play. So practicing was not a high priority.

Dusty is one of the great British female singers from the 60's. She had such a beautiful unique voice & covered many genres (blue-eyed soul, pop ,ballads, country, jazz). She had a lot of hits such as "I Only Want To Be With You", "I'll Try Anything", "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", "Wishin' & Hopin' ", "The Look Of Love", "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "Son Of A Preacher Man", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" & many more.
Oh, "The Look of Love"... That was a great one - only she may sing that song as far as I'm concerned. That's hers'. That and "You Don't Have to Say...". Her voice sure is recognizable too.

'Son Of A Preacher Man', was much later in her career, she loved performing, back in the mid 60s she had her own TV show on the BBC, she was so successful.
I like your comment about Dusty being slightly flat (in both the studio and live versions). It seems obvious that was intentional and like you said, sometimes being off the note...is the RIGHT note.

I'm glad to read this. Dusty's voice always sounds to me a bit flat [in pitch] even though she's clearly a skilled singer and extremely consistent. It doesn't spoil my enjoyment of an incredible voice, it's just something I kept hearing. I have wondered if it was just me, but if it's deliberate then fair play!
Dusty Springfield was one of Anne Murray‘s greatest idols. In 1985 when Anne did her TV special, “The Sounds of London“, she managed to get Dusty to break out of her 5 year period of being a recluse and do the show with her. Here‘s a short clip: part interview, part singing medleys together.

When I saw what you were going to do, I was worried. I am one of the 3 backing singers on this, and was a close friend of Dusty's. It was such a relief to hear how great a job she did. That concert was pretty chaotic! Love your insights

An analysis of Lulu's version of "Oh Me, Oh My" would also be interesting. Though it was not her biggest hit, it was one of her most soulful performances.
Cilla is a great singer, had a great vocal voice, had great songs, Paul McCartney wrote a couple of songs for her to record, (Step Inside Love) and (It's For You) both great songs. The Beatles were instrumental in Cilla getting her break, they'd get her up to sing at The Cavern back in the day.
Effortless, like Karen Carpenter. Today they scream out.

Her longtime personal assist. said before performance Dusty's chest would turn very bright pink ...the flush of fright. But when she stepped on stage she became a different person, ie.very confident and enjoyed performing. Interesting that her death certificate stated occupation was not "singer" but was "entertainer." So appropriate . The ones that we remember with fondness today were more than just singers don't you think?
Your vocal breakdowns are incredibly interesting. They actually help people understand what they're hearing for the 1st time. You can hear a song 100 times and not appreciate what's going on with the vocals, but after hearing this breakdown you get it. Excellent stuff brother.

He plays a 3 piece , Kick , snare , floor tom. If needed ...and the speed doesn't matter , he uses the kick with the floor to simulate a double pedal. It's seemless and he's still playing the rest of the rhythm with his other hand. He 100% nails a Dream Theater , Slipknot, ..any drum part on a 3 piece. Timing, accuracy, precision , and speed ..probably the best ive ever seen. All on a 3 piece.

Hi Fil…She was one of my high school favorites, and became an all time favorite! Her throaty sound was just gorgeous! She then went on to sing with The Pet Shop Boys! She stayed fresh! We lost her too soon! I did read she had perfect pitch! She knew if someone was off in the band! ✌️
yeh sue friend of mine was dj in clubs 80s 90s he played pet shop disco dance night recall they had a hit with dusty but cant recall the song believe he would play simetimes must have been early 90s lots of older stars would sing with new wave acts like shirley bassey propellorheads history repeating was another he would play in club around that time

Oh, Dusty Springfield! I've loved her voice since I first heard it as a kid. So incredibly skilled and it all seems so effortless. It would be interesting to hear your analysis of her cover of Burt Bacharach's and Hal David's The Look of Love. She said the way she was asked to sing it seemed 'too sexy' and I think it was Burt B. who said that it's perfect and to keep doing it that way. That song is a lot different type of song than this one is so am curious to hear what you'd have to say about it, and how here voice would compare live and in studio. I wonder if it was a conscious thing she did to go to major scale with her voice on the live performance. Either way, that's impressive.

Have always loved Dusty especially singing Son of a Preacher Man! She had such a a big, husky voice (which I really like). I always thought she was about 5'9" tall - she was only about 5'3" !! Thanks for this review ❤😊❤

Oh Fil, this was so wonderful. I never realized she was singing a minor note sometimes and a major note sometimes in this. Yeah, the thing she does sliding into notes and out of notes is so sexy and soulful. She does it in such a subtle way. I wish she would have done a gospel LP.
She did do one gospel song on the Memphis LP, I think it was. Thanks so much for doing this. I think this live performance of the song is terrific, she was really enjoying the backup singers she had. Great back up singers would always get her going. Also, she would shine in front of a great orchestra.

Thank you Fil! Dusty Springfield has always been my favorite pop/soul/r&b singer, I love how sexy, breathy but strong and flexible her voice is and I love her slides and the way she bends notes. Your graphing her live and studio recordings are a revelation! She was known to be a meticulous singer and thanks to your great knowledge and ability to convey it to the public, we can clearly see not only how but why she would slightly change her live performances, which is so interesting and insightful. Of course I had heard her sing this song and others, but it wasn't until you analyzed this song that I realized that she wasn't a Southern Belle. Well, maybe she came from the South of England, but I always thought she was from America. You set me out on a journey to find out more about her and I was impressed.
Wikipedia says she grew up in and around London, so yes, she was a southerner (southern England) - though of Irish descent on both sides of her family. However, this song's writers were American (no "preacher men" in the UK!) and she recorded it in Memphis - probably with American pronunciation, as in this great clip with Mel Torme: m.th-cam.com/video/-dgyeDYfdMM/w-d-xo.html

Dusty had to "slide" her notes because it is a song about sly seduction.
The studio recording (minor key) probably reflected the tensions she felt working with the imperious Jerry Wexler. Live, she probably felt free--and the energy of singing in front of an audience.
Thoroughly enjoy watching these. Fil genuinely enjoys the variety of artists he’s analyzing.
Fil, I loved your analysis of Dusty Springfield's vocals. I've heard her songs play on the radio, yet your analysis furthered my education on her as well as what I've learned in music from years ago. I appreciated your thorough explanation of her live performance and the recording differences. This might sound crazy: When you mentioned about the major scale's uplifting effect, I felt like you confirmed something that I'd thought ages ago. Teachers would tell me, "No, neither major or minor scales make any difference in the mood" while I silently begged to differ with them. Your analyses continue to remind and teach me of what I've learned musically. I can now add that at times, your analyses confirm which is refreshing. I have heard from two different sources that Ms Springfield (one of my very favorite singers!) was beset with stage fright before live performances. Might this account for the vocal variations between these two performances? As always, your analysis is tops! Thank you Fil!
In answer to the question regarding whether professional artists get nervous before a show?!
Most do, but it is more an anxiety anticipation of getting up there and doing it, it's usually a positive nervous tension that we as musician's get, prior to a show or gig, or recording studio session, it is a normal positive thing, (not a negative. It gets the adrelian going for the most part. This nervousness can start occurring days, sometimes weeks before performance time, all good, (we want things to go right), make sure everyone is on the same page, connection with all those involved in a show, is very important and necessary for a good outcome. It is very normal for artist's, actor's, talk show's, (radio and TV), people for example, David Letterman and the like, The Johnny Carson's etc, Prime Minister's, leader's, President's, Royalty, all require to be well prepared for all event's and occasions.
It comes with the task, and territory. Board meeting's, etc.
I think most people go through this type of thing sometime in life, even around the table at a family birthday, Xmas get together, it just may mean someone has to take the floor. Foot notes can help. Hope this explanation helps.
Thanks Fil! I have experienced the same anxiety you describe! Boardrooms can be very anxiety provoking. It was Petula Clark who commented in an interview that her good friend Dusty, had an unusually tough time of it. As a performer herself, she suggested that this wonderful singer's performance anxiety was quite extreme. Hence the question. The software you are using is quite amazing and you bring to it with your vocal skills and knowledge an appreciation for subtleties that reveal things I can only "sort of" hear until you explain them. That major/minor thing ... I wonder if that explains why I remember the studio version as more of a lament. I guess I thought the PK in the song was a player, with the narrator sharing a story not unlike Superstar (Carpenters shout-out, lol), just up-tempo and more wry than heartbroken. But that live version feels more like re-telling a meet-cute, right? Kinda amazing what a difference a little change can make.

Fil, once again you have blown me away by making me appreciate even more a song and an artist I have loved for as long as I can remember!
The lyric, the melody, the phrasing, tone and delivery by Dusty all combine to create a true work of art which perfectly captures the coy, conspiratorial "Oooh My!" moment in the song's narrator's life! It's beautiful. Perhaps because of the sliding I had always imagined those key words "preacher's" "come" "take" "prise" (emphatic words) as sounding on a blue note. I was clearly wrong!! What amazes me is that Dusty could take this song from minor to major without most of us even noticing until you showed us Fil!! And how awesome that in major or minor Dusty keeps the song so smokey'!!! Thank you once again. (BTW I love how wide ranging your enthusiasms are in musical style. Would you consider doing an analysis video on Erykah Badu's performance of "What you gonna do for me" performed in front of Chaka Khan? And Tina Turner's performance of "Whatever you Want" live in Amsterdam in 1996 (Tina might be an interesting study how accurate can a rough voice be, and how rough can an accurate voice be, also the management of a maturer voice, backing vocals, backtracks etc. ? Dusty didn't think she was all that. Many times they say she would record a tract with no self monitoring and be spot on. Listen to her famous fade outs where she'd belt with the best of them. If she'd realized that she was so much more than good enough.
This day and age her "demons " wouldn't have held her back. Makes you wonder what could have been.
