  • Alright, more progress on the 1991 Audi 90 20v quattro sport! while it was running and driving the timing belt was at least 15 years old! not something that I would trust, my philosophy is that if you're not 100% sure that its been changed in less than 90 thousand miles, just replace it. These 20v motors are all interference, meaning if that belt snaps, you're going to be smacking pistons into valves and you're going to need a lot more work than if you had just changed the belt.
    I try to give some insight and good instructional video / explanations at critical parts, but isn't a step by step video with torque specs. Feel free to ask any questions below, i'll do my best to answer them. This information crosses over to the 7A and 3B but is also very applicable to the AAN ABY ADU as well as the 10v motor varieties (NG, WX, etc.). The work isn't hard but I try to stress the importance of the timing marks! know what you're getting into before starting!

    Awesome! It truly is amazing how nice and original this thing is. Makes working on them so much more enjoyable. Great call out on using the flywheel mark as well, I was waiting for that! At least when changing the strut mounts/bearings you just gotta take off the top portion of the strut and not the whole dang housing, like the B2 cars. Nice stuff!!!

    Are there no flywheel marks as well like the AAN? I remember the 'dot' on my crankshaft pulley was slightly off and it was always nice to re-confirm alignment using the flywheel mark. However, I like the idea of truly checking through the spark plug hole.

    • @BrokenQuattros
      @BrokenQuattros  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is a line on the flywheel just like aan and other 5 cyls for that matter, its often hard to see, using a welding rod or something down into the cylinder is an accurate way to test.

    You mention timing way off. Can 3 teeth off do catastrophic damage? Got offered engine but timing is off that much. Engine out of car. Spinning by hand can't feel any valve knocks. First time doing project on this type engine so wanna check if worth taking risk.

    Hi. I just replaced the timing belt on my ‘91 QC. All the same way that you did. I tried to start it, without radiators, belts and rest of accessories. It’s cranking but no spark. Do you think that it might be because of the missing signal from some kind of accessory sensor ??

    • @BrokenQuattros
      @BrokenQuattros  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im assuming it was running prior? The only sensors are dizzy internal hall sender, and crank/flywheel sensors. So as long as those are all hooked up. And the coil is connected to the dizzy, nothing should have changed. Unless you touched one of those components, there is nothing on the front of the 7a engine that makes it run

    • @woodart11
      @woodart11 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrokenQuattros Yes it was running. I already checked pin and flywheel sensor, all good. Spark just disappeared. I tried everything. The only part that I didn’t test is ECU.

    • @BrokenQuattros
      @BrokenQuattros  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on condition, rust, maintenance. It could be a very good buy. If its rusty, no. If it needs thousands in deferred maintenance, but is pristine otherwise, it could still be worth it. Depends on what it really needs.

      5 speed 1991 audi cs 90 quattro 20v i5 with 179,xxx miles over good shape for the year and how rare these are. Put quite a bit of parts into this car since buying it last year so quite of bit of fresh parts. Car will come with 2 sets of wheels, one has winter tires that are in good shape and one has older tires that need replacing, car comes with lots of spare parts, as well as factory repair manuals. Since I've had the car it has gotten a new fuel pump, fuel filter, alternator belt, distributor gear, distributor cap, spark plugs, valve cover gasket was replaced recently, car needs headliner but isn't insufferable without it. Overall a solid car that can be driven away and I'd trust it on any long road trip, needs new pads and rotors, but isn drivable. definitely worth saving and restoring to it's former glory. Don't really want to sell but I'm moving and can't keep it. Valves, water pump, and timing belt were also redone within 15k and will provide details and pictures in dm.

      On the older 5 Cyl motors, the crank bolt tightens down on the harmonic balancer itself, unlike the 4 bangers where you can leave the crank bolt and remove the balancer.
