  • Season 9 ends at the beginning - with the man who changed Hollywood forever and wrote the blueprint for A16Z’s upending of Silicon Valley a generation later, Michael Ovitz and his “Dream Factory”, Creative Artists Agency. From Jurassic Park to Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Goodfellas, Rain Man, ER, and even the Coca-Cola polar bears... almost nothing in 80s and 90s pop culture didn’t have CAA’s stamp on it. Speaking of dreams, this episode was totally one for us, and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did making it!!

    Sponsors:
    - Thank you to our presenting sponsor for all of Season 9, Pilot.com! Pilot takes care of startups' bookkeeping, tax and CFO services so busy founders can focus on what matters. To paraphrase Jeff Bezos's AWS analogy: bookkeeping and tax don't make your product any better - so you should let Pilot handle them for you. Pilot is in fact backed by Bezos himself, along with other all-star investors including Sequoia, Index, and Stripe. They are truly the gold standard for startup bookkeeping, and many of the companies we work with run on them. Great interview. He seems like such a nice old man, I’ve heard so many stories of how brutal he was. Travis Kalanick tells a story of being strong armed and bullied by him as an investor in one of his early companies.

Studios trying to negotiate against CCA’s monopoly… "Of the 50, top grossing directors, CAA represented like 45 of them. It was impossible. You couldn't say no. "

Amazing Interview guys really. I first got introduced to Michael's journey as a super Hollywood agent on a Harvard Idea Cast podcast and watching your podcast brings it all together and reveals more details that were not covered on the Harvard podcast. As a South African media entrepreneur still trying to lay a foundation for my own media entity, I am inspired to keep my foot on the accelerator, though I am starting with no funding whatsoever (it's hard to get funding over here) I will build my media company 1$ at time out of pocket or brick by brick as the saying goes. If possible please connect me with funding initiatives over there for African entrepreneurs. Thanks again gentlemen for a great podcast with Mr. Ovitz.

Candid feedback: you're easily my fav podcast. But when you bring the main subject to the pod, they end up stealing the storytelling which makes the show worse (not better) IMO.
I think Standard Oil or Berkshire episodes would actually be less entertaining if you had Rockefeller or Buffet in the pod. And that's a weird/surprising thing to say! - I mean, I love these guys but I see your pod as storytelling not interviews.

Thank you for the feedback! Point well taken. While Michael (and Sam and Packy and all our recent guests) were wonderful, I agree there's a special magic when it's just Ben and me storytelling. :) We had a few reasons for dialing that back the past couple episodes ("few reasons" being mainly my 2 month old baby haha), but don't worry we'll be back in form in 2022!

Congratulations on your baby that is most likely learning how to walk now because this is coming one year later! Excellent interview! I read Michael’s book 2 times already and I just LOVED it! He really is such a great guy and he always seems to be one step ahead of everyone else!
Great job guys and best of luck with your little one :)
