I LET A SUBSCRIBER FIX MY BMW | Valve Cover Gasket & OFH Gasket

  • In this video, I let a long time subscriber replace my valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket. We had talked for a couple years via Facebook and Instagram and I felt confident that he wasn't a serial killer.
Both gaskets were purchased from www.fcpeuro.com
Enter your vehicle info to be sure you're getting the correct parts for your car.
My thoughts on these two jobs:
    OIL FILTER HOUSING GASKET
This one was actually pretty simple. Had we not been filming, we could have knocked this out in an hour. If you can change the oil on your car, you can change this gasket.
    VALVE COVER GASKET
This took 8 hours including filming and a couple trips to Autozone. The aluminum bolts are extremely fragile. We broke two before realizing his torque wrench was slightly out of calibration (yeah, it's that sensitive). disconnecting the fuel rail might be intimidating for some since a little bit of gasoline will leak out. The valve cover itself it in a tight spot and it's like a puzzle getting it out and back in. There are a lot of tedious steps, but with a Bentley Service Manual and a full day (or two) to work, most intermediate to advanced DIYers should be able to figure this one out.

OMG I’ve been a mechanic for 27 years and that trick to remove oil from the plug hole is amazing. When I did my valve cover gasket on 2011 328i I just used the old long skinny screwdriver and rag trick with a lil carb cleaner. This is my first BMW and let me tell you I absolutely love love love my car. Even at 138,000 miles it drives like brand new and still hauls ass.

@@MrDeepanbaba that would be from oil spillage from the VC being taken off. Let it run for a min and burn all the oil off. If it continues then you have pinched the gasket and it is dripping alittle and burning.

Always great to see when ppl are real enough to admit to those tiny little mishaps that we all do, like forgetting to reconnect that ground wire or replacing the o ring on the coolant hose. People like to edit that stuff out & appear like a day & 1/2 job took 20 some mins, but if you wrench at all you know that's just not realistic. I got an m272 equipped Benz thinking I'd never have to do valve covers. I was wrong, & it literally took me all night. But when it's done, life is def good. Respect!!

The reason I'm asking is because I once saw a video and I forgot the guy's name but he indicated that sometimes the only problem would be minor on the water pumps thus presenting an opportunity for some to be repaired and get back into working condition again...

I need to do that on my N54 but since the valve cover is plastic I should probably just replace it for a new one as well.

Awesome. My local BMW service center, CA, recommends that I change the 3 gaskets: valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, and oil pan gasket. After watching this video, it seems pretty important to this. Any idea, ballpark, what it would cost. The dealership never gave me a quote.

@@austingfellers9112 Thanks. Thats what I discovered. I called 5 BMW Service Centers and got this: about 800 for valve cover gasket, about 800 for housing oil filter gasket, then 1200 for oil pan gasket because something need to be mounted also. I'm sure I can find better prices and get them done one at a time.

@@christianventura4156 that depends entirely on how bad the leak is from each. I'd whichever is leaking the most first. You never wanna run these cars low on oil.

I didn't have any 1/4 extenders or swivel so I removed the alternator. Which was ok since I was doing the tensioner, idler pulley and belt. 3/8 extenders and swivel won't work.

Justin did this gasket ever start leaking again? A lot of shops recommend changing the whole valve cover. Also did you guys just add coolant after the OFHG or did you guys bleed the system too?

    Great video, thumbs up!
When installing the Valve Tronic motor again, just put it back in and torque it in place, thats it? No need to get out of "service" state? Have seen guys in other videos using the allen key once more after VTM is in place. Any suggestion on that?

    • @justinbuice
      @justinbuice  ปีที่แล้ว

Hey I just asked my friend who appears in the video. he said you have to hold the Valvetronic motor to the gasket and screw the worm gear into the valve train with an Allen key. then tighten the bolts that secure the valvetronic motor to the valve cover. Turn the vehicle to the ON setting without starting the engine about 4 times then start the engine to reset the valvetronic motor
