This video is perfect for what I am going through. We had very strong windstorms, a lot of damage on my roses. I will be pruning this whole week and applying fertilizer. I don't have Japanese beetles in my area, but we get cane borer and it kill one of my roses. I wanted to thank you for letting me know about prune sealer last year and how to use a little container with alcohol to disinfect the pruners. I begin using this season Great Big Roses on my new bare root roses that were taking their time to wake up and it's working. Thanks to your videos I'm a better gardener to my roses.
Sometimes I feel bad about cutting down those canes. You have encouraged me to be a little strict with my rose babies so that they’ll look prim and proper 😁
Thanks for posting this helpful video. I was wondering if I can do the same size cut back for Lady of Shalott rose which tends to grow and flower at 6 ft height in my garden.
@@TheRoseGeek Thanks. I enjoyed watching your garden trip videos, specially DA Albrighton. That one is the only video on youtube that has all rose names.
Thank you Kimberly! I was hoping you could do a video on defoliating the roses for the sawfly larve? I'm at that point after a good first flush but now left with all holes in leaves. If you already have a video on that I can watch that? Thanks
Search for “Rose Geek defoliation”. Kimberley made a video where she took all the leaves off and in 2 weeks they were all back. Had no idea plants couldn’t live without leaves except during winter dormancy.
What time of the year do you do this? I am going to get a Queen of Sweden David Austin rose and apparently they are tall and skinny. I love the rose as it has upright flowers, but would prefer that it was less than 5ft and bushier, so wondered if I can cut back anytime?
I try to use gloves and then typically take them off. Depending on the rose, it isn't often too bad. When you get the little tiny thorns, that is when I really regret my life choices.
Wow I was writing the same comment then saw this. I can’t actually walk all the way around mine though. I had two punctures through my gloves. One caused a bleeding wound. You are brave indeed.

I will slowly learn to trust my larger roses to be resilient. 👍🏽

I also get nervous after a rose that has previously struggled finally grows up.

The proof is in the pudding! Look at how full they look when trimmed down 😍
I need to invest in that rose cane sealer too.
Yes. My favorite is Bonide.

Great video !
Excellent video did you say Bonsai sealer Thanks
How do you sanitize your tools in between each rose? What do you use? Spray? Clorox wipe? Wd40?
I use a small paint bucket filled with 70% alcohol. th-cam.com/video/U0KDjPCJyMY/w-d-xo.html
What is the best time of season to cut down the length of the roses. Thank you
Any time! I typically cut them to waist high (non-climbers) after each bloom.
Thank you 😊
Hey Kim. How much time do you spend in your garden each day?
Typically I would spend two hours a day.
What brand of sealant do you use?
Found it🥰💐
Excellent! I hope it helps!
Very brave to work with roses without gloves!!! 😮
